GoPro's new Hero3 cameras shoot super high-res 4K video

18 hrs.

The folks at GoPro have updated their popular line of rugged cameras. The new Hero3 models are smaller, lighter and capable of snagging super high-resolution 4K footage.

There are three models in the Hero3 line: The Black Edition, the Silver Edition and the White Edition. The models are priced at $399, $299?and $199, respectively.?The Black Edition can shoot 4K video while the White and Silver Edition stick to 1080p.

The awesomely high resolution of the Black Edition is pretty darn appealing, but there's a little catch: If you're shooting in 4K mode, the frame rate you'll get will drop to 15fps. (Lower resolutions can be shot at frame rates up to 120fps.) This is rather unappealing since you'll most likely want to shoot speedy action?? such as extreme sports or similar?? with a rugged little camera like that. Ah, well. At least YouTube added support for 4K videos some time ago, so you can share your low frame rate footage easily and show everyone how gorgeous it is.

The new Hero3 models can be preordered now. No word as to when they'll ship.
