Breast cancer survivors benefit from practicing mindfulness-based stress reduction

ScienceDaily (Dec. 29, 2011) ? Women recently diagnosed with breast cancer have higher survival rates than those diagnosed in previous decades, according to the American Cancer Society. However, survivors continue to face health challenges after their treatments end. Previous research reports as many as 50 percent of breast cancer survivors are depressed. Now, University of Missouri researchers in the Sinclair School of Nursing say a meditation technique can help breast cancer survivors improve their emotional and physical well-being.

Yaowarat Matchim, a former nursing doctoral student; Jane Armer, professor of nursing; and Bob Stewart, professor emeritus of education and adjunct faculty in nursing, found that breast cancer survivors' health improved after they learned Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), a type of mindfulness training that incorporates meditation, yoga and physical awareness.

"MBSR is another tool to enhance the lives of breast cancer survivors," Armer said. "Patients often are given a variety of options to reduce stress, but they should choose what works for them according to their lifestyles and belief systems."

The MBSR program consists of group sessions throughout a period of eight to ten weeks. During the sessions, participants practice meditation skills, discuss how bodies respond to stress and learn coping techniques. The researchers found that survivors who learned MBSR lowered their blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate. In addition, participants' mood improved, and their level of mindfulness increased after taking the class. Armer says, for best results, participants should continue MBSR after the class ends to maintain the positive effects.

"Mindfulness-based meditation, ideally, should be practiced every day or at least on a routine schedule," Armer said. "MBSR teaches patients new ways of thinking that will give them short- and long-term benefits."

Armer says the non-pharmaceutical approach works best as a complement to other treatment options such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

"Post diagnosis, breast cancer patients often feel like they have no control over their lives," Armer said. "Knowing that they can control something -- such as meditation -- and that it will improve their health, gives them hope that life will be normal again."

The study, "Effects of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on Health Among Breast Cancer Survivors," was published in the Western Journal of Nursing Research.

2011: The year of comebacks

As we all look forward to what the future holds in 2012, WWE.com takes a moment to reflect on the year that was. After close examination of the WWE action and excitement throughout the past 365 days, one thing became clear: 2011 was definitely a great year for comebacks. Check out the list below and judge for yourself.

Booker T
Before returning to the squared circle in a bid to teach Cody Rhodes a lesson in respect, the 6-time World Champion made a triumphant return to WWE in January during the 2011 Royal Rumble Match. He has since become a mainstay behind the SmackDown commentary booth, but as Rhodes has learned, Booker still has what it takes to compete inside the squared circle. The former World Heavyweight Champion also joined Trish Stratus and ?Stone Cold? Steve Austin in the development of potential new Superstars on the USA reality series ?Tough Enough.?

1311437632001|04:16Kevin Nash
Also in 2011?s Royal Rumble Match, one of the most controversial Superstars of all time made his return to WWE. Big Daddy Cool Kevin Nash, a.k.a. Diesel, earned resounding cheers throughout the WWE Universe when his classic entrance theme played in January?s 40-Superstar contest. The accolades faded, however, when Nash, who had not competed in WWE for nearly six years, set his sights on former best friend Triple H. Although The Game ultimately got the best of Big Sexy at WWE TLC, Nash?s 2011 comeback conjured up rumors of everything from the Kliq taking over to the return of the infamous New World Order.

802306495001|04:12Triple H
In 2010, Sheamus attacked The Game with a lead pipe, causing an injury serious enough to keep Triple H out of action for months. In the weeks leading up to WrestleMania XXVII, The Cerebral Assassin returned to the ring to challenge The Undertaker and his Undefeated WrestleMania Streak. Although he barely escaped with The Streak intact, The Deadman was mercilessly pummeled by The Game, to the point that he had to be carried out on a stretcher and has not been seen since. Triple H would recover from the brutal contest and return again as WWE COO, only to return to the ring shortly thereafter. Finally, The Cerebral Assassin would stage a third, and perhaps most impressive, comeback following an attack by Kevin Nash. It appears that no matter how long Triple H is sidelined, he always comes back on top of his game.

826228174001|04:49Trish Stratus
The WWE Universe was delighted when former Women?s Champion Trish Stratus made her return to the ring at WrestleMania XXVII in Atlanta. There, Stratus teamed up with John Morrison & Snooki and defeated Lay-Cool & Dolph Ziggler. Besides proving that she is still one of the greatest Divas to ever compete in WWE, the Toronto native accompanied Booker T in the development of potential new Superstars on the USA reality series, ?Tough Enough.?

The Classic Intercontinental Championship
Cody Rhodes is not one to go out of his way to draw cheers from the WWE Universe. However, at Hell in a Cell, the Intercontinental Champion explained that he wanted to be held in the same high regard as legendary Intercontinental Champions such as Mr. Perfect, ?Rowdy? Roddy Piper and ?Stone Cold? Steve Austin. Rhodes felt the way to accomplish this way by doing away with the current incarnation of the title and bringing back the classic look. Despite its collective disdain for Cody, the WWE Universe loved the throwback to yesteryear and Rhodes has proudly carried the title ever since. (PHOTOS: CLASSIC INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP)

1275475197001|06:37Mick Foley
One week before The Rock and John Cena teamed up at Survivor Series, Mick Foley returned to WWE and presented Cena with a special ?This is Your Life.? As his gesture turned to embarrassment for Cena, The Great One silenced Foley with a shocking Rock Bottom. However, that did not keep the Hardcore Legend down for long as he kicked off the holiday season as Jolly ol? St. Mick for a special live edition of SmackDown. It remains to be seen how involved Foley will be with WWE in the months ahead, but the WWE Universe is surely having nicer days knowing that the former WWE Champion has come back home.

1324268907001|04:34Masked Kane
After being sidelined due to an injury suffered at the hands of Mark Henry, Kane disappeared from WWE for months. In December, The Big Red Monster resurfaced during Henry's battle with John Cena on WWE Raw SuperShow. In a fiery rage, Kane - wearing a mask to cover his visage as it had long ago - shockingly attacked Cena. The comeback of The Big Red Monster's mask seems to have brought Kane back to a much darker place, and has put Cena and the entire WWE Universe on notice. (PHOTOS: MASKED KANE HISTORY)

790273249001|08:34The Rock
The WWE Universe thought it would never happen, but? FINALLY, The Rock has come back to WWE! The People?s Champion electrified the world when he returned to WWE as the host of WrestleMania XXVII. However, The Great One?s return was to be even greater than anyone could possibly imagine. The night after The Show of Shows, The Rock and John Cena agreed to square off at WrestleMania XXVIII. If that wasn?t enough, at Survivor Series, The People?s Champ returned to the squared circle, teaming with Cena to defeat R-Truth & The Miz. The return of The Great One has delighted the millions ? and the millions ? of The Rock?s fans all over the world, certainly making his comeback the most electrifying of 2011.

Equality And Love Documentary, Produced By California State University Long Beach Students, Takes Look At Gay Marriage (VIDEO)

The battle for marriage equality may continue to rage across the Golden State, but this touching documentary produced by California State University Long Beach students helps provide a human context for the ongoing struggle.

Some of the subjects' responses might sound surprising to some, but the overall effect is bittersweet.

"We want everyone to have the same rights as others," the producers note on their YouTube page. "Please stop discrimination."

Lawsuit seeks to get Gingrich on Va. ballot

(AP) ? A Virginia attorney and tea party activist is seeking to have Newt Gingrich's name placed on the state's Super Tuesday primary ballot.

Attorney Jonathon Moseley of Reston, Va., says he filed the suit Thursday in the Circuit Court of Richmond County. It contends that Gingrich met the requirement of filing 10,000 signatures and that many of those were improperly excluded. The suit also takes issue with how the Republican Party of Virginia determined that not enough signatures were valid.

Only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul have been found eligible for the Virginia primary ballot. The campaign of Rick Perry is challenging his exclusion in court.

Moseley says he is acting independently of the Gingrich campaign but is encouraging the former House speaker to join his suit.

Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said the campaign has not decided how to proceed in Virginia.

Gingrich believes that he was kept off the ballot in the state ? where he now lives ? because a paid campaign worker committed fraud by turning in false signatures, according to Hammond.

Gary Johnson sets third-party pot bubbling as he quits GOP race

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson said Wednesday he is quitting the Republican primaries and will run for president as a Libertarian, highlighting the possibility a third-party candidate could impact the 2012 election.

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson said Wednesday that he is quitting the Republican primaries and will run for president as a Libertarian, highlighting the possibility a third-party candidate could play a role in deciding the 2012 presidential election.

Governor Johnson was not a factor in the battle between Republican candidates now raging in Iowa. As a result of his meager performance in the polls, he was excluded from all but two of this year?s 15 Republican presidential debates.?

Barring a major surge in his appeal to voters, Johnson?s switch of party affiliation is not likely to have a major nationwide impact. The move could affect the results in the swing state of New Mexico. A Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey there found Johnson could draw 20 to 23 percent of the vote, insuring that President Obama would carry the state with 44 to 45 percent of the vote.

Beyond its implications in New Mexico, Johnson?s move increases the likelihood the 2012 presidential race will feature a stronger than usual third-party showing. Democratic strategist Stanley Greenberg recently predicted ?there is going to be a third party candidate? based on high levels of voter dissatisfaction. When Ross Perot made his third party run in 1992, ?those were happy times compared to now in terms of the mood of the country,? Greenberg said. ?

Greenberg?s view is that ?almost any third party helps Obama? by splintering the president?s opposition. He spoke at a recent Monitor-hosted breakfast for reporters.

Americans Elect is a major force helping boost the prospects for a stronger third-party movement. On its website, the group says its goal is ?to nominate a presidential ticket that answers directly to voters ? not the political system.? The non-partisan organization is now on the ballot in 13 states including California, Florida, Ohio, and Michigan, and signature collecting efforts are underway in 17 others. It has raised $22 million to date. Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus recently wrote that Americans Elect is the ?political wild card for the Internet? age.

Another wild card is who Governor Johnson will have to battle for the Libertarian nomination. One possibility is that Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who ran for president under the Libertarian banner in 1988, might seek to run on the Libertarian ticket if he does not land the Republican nomination. Congressman Paul has not definitively ruled out seeking the Libertarian nomination.

In a statement, Libertarian Party executive director Carla Howell welcomed Johnson to the party, saying he had ?an outstanding record for vetoing legislation? and ?has also proposed a substantial reduction in federal spending.? ?He also supports legalizing marijuana and abortion rights.?The Libertarian nominating convention is scheduled for May 5.?

Prior to his formal announcement at a Santa Fe press conference, Johnson sounded bitter about the Republican primary process. He told the Alamogordo Daily News that ?anyone who looks at what has happened would say I have been treated unfairly. I think I?ve been hung out to dry by the Republican Party.?

It is not clear whether life in a third party will be better. As the National Journal?s Hotline noted, the last time a third-party candidate was included in a general election debate was 1996, when Ross Perot was running on the Reform Party ticket.

New satellites to extend China?s troops reach

10118

Thanks!

An error occurred!

HONG KONG (Reuters) ? China this week reached a miracle in a expostulate to master a troops use of space with a launch of trials for a Beidou satellite global positioning network, a pierce that will move it one step closer to relating U.S. space capabilities.

If Beijing can successfully muster a full 35 satellites designed for a Beidou network on report by 2020, a troops will be giveaway of a stream coherence for navigation on a U.S. tellurian positioning network (GPS) signals and Russia?s identical GLONASS system.

And, distinct a reduction accurate municipal versions of GPS and GLONASS accessible to a People?s Liberation Army (PLA), this network will give China a correctness to beam missiles, intelligent munitions and other weapons.

?This will concede a large burst in a pointing conflict capability of a PLA,? pronounced Andrei Chang, a Hong Kong-based researcher of a Chinese troops and editor of Kanwa Asian Defense magazine.

China has launched 10 Beidou satellites and skeleton to launch 6 some-more by a finish of subsequent year, according to a China Satellite Navigation Management Office.

Chinese and unfamiliar troops experts contend a PLA?s General Staff Department and General Armaments Department closely coordinate and support all of China?s space programs within a sprawling scholarship and aerospace bureaucracy.

As partial of this system, a Beidou, or ?Big Dipper,? network will have an critical troops purpose alongside a country?s fast expanding network of surveillance, imaging and remote intuiting satellites.

China customarily denies carrying troops ambitions in space.

Defense Ministry orator Yang Yujun Wednesday discharged fears a Beidou network would poise a troops threat, observant that all general satellite navigation systems are designed for twin municipal and troops use.

CATCHING UP WITH THE U.S.

China accelerated a troops satellite investigate and growth after PLA commanders found they were incompetent to lane dual U.S. aircraft conduit conflict groups deployed in 1996 to a Taiwan Strait during a time of high tragedy between a island and a mainland, analysts say.

The bid perceived a offer boost when it was shown how essential satellite networks were in a 1991 Gulf War, a 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and a 2003 advance of Iraq.

While China still lags a United States and Russia in altogether space technology, over a final decade it has fast turn a state-of-the-art aspirant in space-based notice after deploying a operation of modernized satellite constellations that offer troops and municipal agencies.

With a launch of some-more than 30 notice satellites over a final decade, according to space record experts, a PLA can guard an expanding area of a earth?s aspect with increasing frequency, an critical component of arguable troops reconnaissance.

That coverage gives PLA commanders vastly softened capability to detect and lane intensity troops targets.

Real-time satellite images and information can also be used to coordinate a operations of China?s naval, barb and strike aircraft army in operations distant from a mainland.

?What we are saying is China broadly appropriation a same capabilities in this area as those hold by a U.S.,? pronounced Ross Babbage, a invulnerability researcher and owner of a Canberra-based Kokoda Foundation, an eccentric confidence process unit.

?Essentially, they are creation many of a Western Pacific distant some-more pure to their military.?

In a new essay for a Journal of Strategic Studies, researchers Eric Hagt and Matthew Durnin attempted to guess a capability of China?s space network regulating orbital displaying program and accessible information on satellite performance.

China?s many simple satellites carried electro-optical sensors able of holding high fortitude digital images in a manifest and non-visible wavelengths, wrote a authors.

More modernized satellites launched in new years carried absolute fake orifice radars that could dig cloud and cover most bigger areas in high detail.

Added to that, China was now deploying satellites that could guard electronic signals and emissions, supposed electronic comprehension or ELINT platforms, a authors said.

?Next to China, usually a United States possesses some-more able tactical support systems in space for tactical operations,? they wrote.

Noel Rockmore, 'Picasso of New Orleans,' revisited (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? In the four-block radius where he painted and drank himself into frightening stupors, Noel Rockmore was known by the denizens of the French Quarter as an outrageous Pablo Picasso-like figure who combined the mythological and the real. He produced some 15,000 oil paintings, temperas, collages and sketches over his career and then died in obscurity.

His life was that of an American outsider and a throwback to Europe's great expressionistic and hedonistic masters.

In the 1950s, when he was still in his 20s, his paintings hung in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Hirshhorn Museum. He was a bright young American artist who had a taste for Rembrandt and figurative paintings, with the outlook of an American social realist.

Then, the art world changed: Abstract expressionism ? typified by the paint throwing of Jackson Pollock ? became the rave. Rockmore, who admired draftsmanship in painting, detested it.

Rockmore changed: He left his wife and three children, changed his last name and headed to New Orleans in 1959, where he would eventually get lost to the New York art world.

The story of Noel Montgomery Davis (his real name) is getting a long-overdue audience outside New Orleans, a city that is enjoying something of an art renaissance itself six years after Hurricane Katrina. From now until the end of January, his works are on view at the LaGrange Art Museum in Georgia. The retrospective is called "Creative Obscurity: The Genius Noel Rockmore."

"He was kind of an art hobo," said Ethyl Ault, interim director of the LaGrange Art Museum.

She said Rockmore was an overlooked genius. "Was it politics? Did he offend people? Why was he so popular in New York when he was younger, and then he leaves, changes his name and then goes on into his fairy tale land?"

The show is based on nearly 1,500 Rockmore artworks retrieved from storage units in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. For 25 years, Shirley Marvin, an octogenarian Baton Rouge patron, had been saving Rockmore artworks and memorabilia with the intention of making him famous one day.

But she had forgotten about the collection due to short-term memory loss, her family said. Marvin was one of Rockmore's most devoted fans. She saw genius in him ? like many others in New Orleans. The extraordinary collection was gathering dust when her son, Rich Marvin, took her down to New Orleans in October 2006, a year after Katrina, to get "a few paintings," as her mother described it. Instead, they found the units packed with remnants of Rockmore's life.

In the wake of the collection's discovery, Rich and his wife, Tee Marvin, have become Rockmore's biggest impresarios ? the agents Rockmore famously refused to have throughout his life as he willfully lived on the edge of the art world. He was notorious among art galleries for his temper and fits of outrage. His friends say he suffered emotional problems for much of his life.

The Marvins ? working with Rockmore's family and art dealers, collectors and museum curators ? have begun cataloging his works and promoting him. They estimate he produced about 15,000 pieces of art and conservatively 750 to 1,000 of those are masterpieces.

"At first we thought my mom was crazy," Rich Marvin said. "When a museum or gallery lines up his top 200 exquisite works, people will be as stunned as we are."

Rockmore was born in 1928 in New York to a family of artists. He was supertalented. A child prodigy, he played the violin well by age 8. After suffering polio at age 10, he turned to painting. He studied briefly at The Juilliard School and had a studio at the Cooper Union. Family friends included Ernest Hemingway, George Gershwin and Thomas Mann.

His 20s were prolific as he painted the bums of the Bowery district, monkeys and elephants in the backstage of the Ringling Brothers Circus and parables of Central Park and Coney Island. He was a social realist, akin to Depression-era American painters such as John Steuart Curry, but these early works contained themes and artistic styles that would stay with him: death, violence, sex, the surreal and the allegorical.

In retrospect, it was the ghoulish and morbid in Rockmore that defined him, making him a kind of American Hieronymus Bosch.

In the 1950s, Rockmore became fed up with the wave of abstract expressionists then taking hold of New York ? the flat tones and humanless canvases of Willem De Kooning, Pollock, Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. During this period he drank heavily and his wife kicked him out because of his wildness, his daughter, Emilie Heller-Rhys, said.

At age 31, he moved down to New Orleans and began working with Larry Borenstein, an art collector, and Allan Jaffe, a business school graduate and tuba player. In the 1960s, Borenstein employed Rockmore as a kind of resident painter for a new society he'd formed with Jaffe to preserve traditional New Orleans jazz music. The society would become Preservation Hall.

Rockmore was commissioned to paint the old-time musicians. He captured the mood, scent, touch and smoke of New Orleans jazz and its musicians ? Punch Miller, Percy Humphrey, Louis Nelson, Sweet Emma and Billie and DeDe Pierce, and scores of others.

His output was staggering. He'd become fixated by a subject ? New Orleans' Carnival traditions, the frenetic Port of New Orleans, the characters of the French Quarter, alien beings, ancient Egypt, voodoo ? and mined it artistically.

Some of his most cherished and memorable pieces are of the Quarter's Bohemians, fellow outsiders: Ruthie the Duck Girl; Gypsy Lou; O.M. (standing for "Old Man"); Mike Stark; Johnny White; and Sister Gertrude Morgan.

Yet, his life was pierced by that dark side.

"He was a brilliant artist, and I don't use those words lightly," said Stephen Clayton, a New Orleans art collector who did not know Rockmore and does not own any of his works. "He chose to come here, came to the Quarter, climbed in a bottle and never got out."

From his morning vodka, Rockmore kept going all day, muscling his way through sketches, wall-sized oils, nudes in charcoal, sculptures and mixed media and calling it quits at one of his favorite bars, often The Alpine, within shouting distance of the St. Louis cathedral and his bed.

There are stories of him trashing art galleries and studios. Handcuffing a woman to his stove. Sticking a mummified cat in one of his works. Going on lithium and alcohol binges that left him a wreck. Cursing at tourists viciously. Sitting in streets with his muddy tennis shoes and rumpled clothing, looking like a bum. Drawing on napkins, grocery bags and just about anything else he liked. Sitting in bars, drinking and trying to get women to go to bed with him.

One of Rockmore's closest friends, Andy Antippas, a former Tulane University poetry professor and art gallery owner, recalled going into Rockmore's apartment during one of his lithium binges and finding his studio in a state that resembled the home of Charles Manson.

"It was trashed," said Antippas, who found pages from Playboy magazine littering the floor and feces from his two dogs in the middle of his bed. "He'd obviously been sitting in one place and drinking and painting for hours."

"Noel was an autodidact of the highest order," Antippas said. "There was probably no artist more prolific than Noel ? except perhaps Picasso."

Antippas is like many Rockmore fans. He believes he was a genius, a master who ranks among the greatest.

In his home on St. Claude Avenue ? cluttered with books, paintings, decorated human skulls, African masks and paintings galore ? Antippas stood in front of a large subdued painting hanging on the wall near his desk. He looked at it and said he owned what he believed to be "one of the finest paintings, if not the best, painting in Western civilization, a nude portrait of his father. It's the only such painting ever done."

"He couldn't relate to the real world. He lived in his own world; he was driven by his own work," said Rita Posselt, a 59-year-old fine art photographer who lived with Rockmore between 1978 and 1984 and frequently posed for him. "He would wake up in the morning and go to bed at night, and in between those hours there was a lot of torment for him."

"He wanted somebody to recognize his talent, and he wanted important people in the art world, museums and such, to do so, but he didn't want to jump through hoops and parties to make it happen."

During his life, and still today, Rockmore was a kind of New Orleans project.

He is woven into the city. Anyone who has stepped into the gloom of Preservation Hall has seen Rockmores ? they're the haunting oil paintings of jazz greats on the walls. A Rockmore hangs in Johnny White's bar. It's a football scene, a token of appreciation for the bar owner, Johnny White, and typically Rockmore: There are three teams on the field. His paintings hang in the Old Mint, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and on the walls of galleries and homes throughout New Orleans. And who knows where else.

"My feeling was that Noel was the most democratic painter," Antippas said. "Every waiter, bartender, in the Quarter has a Rockmore. God knows how many Rockmores are hanging on walls throughout the city."

Rockmore died in 1995 at age 66 of an untreated infection. When he was taken to the hospital, according to friends, he was admitted as a "street person." According to his friends, he sat up on the gurney and declared, "I'm not a street person, I'm a great artist."

"I always say that he is America's Picasso," said Heller-Rhys, his daughter and an accomplished artist herself, as she stood during a recent visit outside the Skyscraper building, an 18th-century apartment building where Rockmore ? and many other artists, including Charles Bukowski ? stayed in the 1970s. "And America has to come to terms with that."

Jacksonville Jaguars Jones-Drew is tackled by Tennessee Titans Ayers and Morgan in NashvilleReuters

As the league tries to improve the protocol for diagnosing concussions during games, the NFL continues to wrestle with a basic reality that exists at every level of the sport.

Football players want to play football.? Thus, they?ll be inclined to try to hide a concussion if it means being allowed to continue to play football.

In a series of 44 Associated Press interviews with current players, 23 of them said they would hide a concussion in order to stay in the game.? Some said they already have.

But more than two-thirds of the players interviewed also said they would like to see an independent neurologist on the sidelines at games.

?They?ve got guys looking at your uniform to make sure you?re wearing the right kind of socks,? Rams safety Quintin Mikell said. ?Why not have somebody there to protect your head?? I think we definitely should have that.?

Mikell also said he has hidden concussions to keep playing, and that he accepts the risks of the life he has chosen.

?I?ll probably pay for it later in my life,? Mikell said.? ?But at the same time, I?ll probably pay for the alcohol that I drank or driving fast cars.? It?s one of those things that it just comes with the territory.?

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew, the NFL?s leading rusher, agreed that he?d hide a concussion in order to keep playing.

?The bottom line is: You have to be able to put food on the table,? Jones-Drew said.? ?No one?s going to sign or want a guy who can?t stay healthy.? I know there will be a day when I?m going to have trouble walking.? I realize that.? But this is what I signed up for.? Injuries are part of the game. If you don?t want to get hit, then you shouldn?t be playing.?

And that captures the essence of the league?s current dilemma.? Most players will assume the risks of concussions in order to keep playing, both in the short term and over the long haul.? But if the league doesn?t do enough to protect them from themselves while they?re playing, some of them will sue the league after their careers end, claiming that the league should have done more.

It should make for interesting arguments as the pending concussion lawsuits unfold, given that the NFL could choose to try to defend itself by developing evidence (likely through expert testimony) that some players who claim that they suffered long-term injuries due to concussions would have hidden concussions, even if the NFL had done more to protect them.? Then again, the former players likely will argue that, if the NFL had been fully candid about the true harm that can be done by head injuries, they would have realized that concussions shouldn?t be hidden.

That said, if more than half of 44 players interviewed at a time when the risks are fully known would still hide concussions, plenty of the players who are now suing the league surely would have hidden concussions, even if the league had better procedures in place before 2009.

Doh! Top Science Journal Retractions of 2011

News | More Science

Each year hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific articles are retracted. Most involve no blatant malfeasance; the authors themselves often detect errors and retract the paper. Some retractions, however, entail plagiarism, false authorship or cooked data

Image: City of Yuma, Arizona

Bad science papers can have lasting effects. Consider the 1998 paper in the journal The Lancet that linked autism to the MMR vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella. That paper was fully retracted in 2010 upon evidence that senior author Andrew Wakefield had manipulated data and breached several proper ethical codes of conduct.

Nevertheless the erroneous paper continues to undermine public confidence in vaccines. After the Lancet article, MMR vaccination rates dipped sharply and haven't fully rebounded. This decline in the MMR vaccine has been tied to a rise in measles cases resulting in permanent injury and death.

Each year hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific articles are retracted. Most involve no blatant malfeasance; the authors themselves often detect errors and retract the paper. Some retractions, however, as documented on the blog Retraction Watch, entail plagiarism, false authorship or cooked data.

No journal is safe from retractions, from the mighty "single-word-title" journals such as Nature, Science and Cell, to the myriad minor, esoteric ones.

Yet as astronomer Carl Sagan once said, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." Below are five science results retracted in 2011, pulled permanently off the books in part for falling far short of meeting the Sagan standard.

#5: Los Angeles marijuana dispensaries lead to drop in crime.

Keep smoking. The RAND Corporation retracted its own report in October after realizing its sloppy data collection.

Crime data compiled from neighborhoods with these highly contentious medical marijuana dispensaries supposedly revealed slightly lower crime rates. The authors attributed this decline not to marijuana itself but rather the presence of security cameras and guards in and around the dispensaries, having a positive effect on the neighborhood. [The History of 8 Hallucinogens]

The L.A. city attorney's office was incensed with the report, having argued the opposite ? that the dispensaries breed crime. The city's lawyers soon found critical flaws in RAND's data collection, largely stemming from RAND's reliance on data from CrimeReports.com, which did not include data from the L.A. Police Department. RAND blamed itself for the error, not CrimeReports.com, which had made no claims of having a complete set of data, and, in fact, didn't even know about the study.

#4 -- Butterfly meets worm, falls in love, and has caterpillars.

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) published a fantastic claim in 2009 by zoologist Donald Williamson, which was delightfully reported in the science news media. Williamson claimed that ancestors of modern butterflies mistakenly fertilized their eggs with sperm from velvet worms. The result was the necessity for the caterpillar stage of the butterfly life cycle.

The PNAS paper got a few laughs among evolutionary scientists, but it hasn't yet been retracted. Williamson's follow-up 2011 paper in the journal Symbiosis, however, has been retracted.

Researchers Michael Hart and Richard Grosberg at the University of Texas, Austin, systematically refuted all of Williamson's claims in the pages of PNAS by the end of 2009. They based their arguments entirely on well-known concepts of both basic evolution and the genetics of modern worms and butterflies. When Symbiosis published its butterfly-meets-worm article in January 2011, Hart raised questions with the editor. As of November the paper is no longer available.

Japan hopes Europe will boost rescue mechanism: sources (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Europe should boost the total firepower of its rescue fund and frontload its funding to send a positive signal to investors and international partners that it is determined to solve its debt crisis, Japanese officials said on Monday.

Japan has repeatedly expressed its willingness to help Europe contain its debt crisis, but has also stressed it wanted to see a convincing action plan before making any firm commitments.

"Japan like other non-euro countries is prepared to do something, but unless European countries take decisive action it is hard to make those steps effective," a senior Japanese government official said.

Lifting the combined size of the current bailout fund (EFSF) and the new permanent European Stability Mechanism (ESM) beyond the current 500 billion euros would be a major step and an encouraging signal.

"We expect European countries will review the combined ceiling of 500 billion euro of EFSF (European Financial Stability Fund) and ESM in a very positive manner," the official told Reuters.

European leaders agreed in Brussels earlier this month to accelerate the launch of the ESM by a year to mid-2012 with an effective lending capacity of 500 billion euros ($650 billion), but questions have arisen about the size and timing of contributions.

Japanese officials said that while bringing forward the launch of the fund was positive, a more ambitious ceiling might be needed given that Europe had little success in bringing in outside investors to boost the firepower of the EFSF fund.

"The leveraging of EFSF money by investors' money doesn't look like materializing very well. That's why they are frontloading the ESM and the review of the ceiling of 500 billion euro is very important," said the official, who declined to be named.

"European countries may think what they've already decided is a major step forward, but markets want Europe to act more decisively."

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble signaled over the weekend that Europe's biggest economy and its main paymaster could boost its contribution to the fund and support its swift launch, although any decisions would have to be made in January.

Since the beginning of the crisis more than two years ago, European leaders have orchestrated bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal, set up a euro zone rescue fund and earlier this month agreed to boost the International Monetary Fund's resources by 150 billion euros.

Still, throughout the crisis that has also shaken Italy and Spain, investors have repeatedly been left with the impression that whatever was agreed in Brussels was too little, too late.

Japan, the United States, Canada and others have voiced their frustration with Europe's piecemeal progress and repeatedly called for bold steps that would create effective "firewalls" around the euro zone's weaker, heavily indebted economies.

Another Japanese government official reiterated on Monday that Tokyo, which led an international effort to boost the IMF's coffers after the Lehman crisis, was open to contributing more but that its decision depended on Europe's actions.

Officials in Tokyo said markets needed to see both effective defenses in the form of funds sufficient enough to cover the crisis-hit nations' financing needs and commitments to fiscal discipline.

"Fiscal discipline is very important. Even if we provide firewalls we need fiscal discipline," the official said.

While Tokyo has repeatedly voiced concern about developments in Europe, its plans to buy Chinese government debt did not reflect lack of confidence in the euro or U.S. dollar assets, another official said.

He said the plans, discussed during Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's visit to Beijing, aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two nations rather than diversifying Japan's exchange reserves, mostly made up of dollar and euro assets.

"The idea is not to depart from the dollar or U.S. government bonds or the euro, so it should not be interpreted as diversification of our portfolio," the official said.

"I don't have any doubts about creditworthiness of the dollar or U.S. government bonds. The dollar will remain the most important currency for the foreseeable future."

Phishing scams target military, families, veterans

WASHINGTON (Dec. 23, 2011) -- Anyone who gets caught by phishing scams loses money, time and security. Phishing is usually an unsolicited email that prompts an action, such as divulging secure information, downloading potentially dangerous files, or sending money to an unknown source.

A recent aggressive phishing attack is making the rounds in an email to USAA members, which appears be from USAA, a financial services company that serves service members, their families, and veterans. The email subject begins with "Deposit Posted."

Members are asked to open a Zeus-infected attached file. Once opened, it launches a malicious virus which if launched could provide access to personal information and may require a complete reinstall of the computer operating system. Most USAA members are affiliated with the military.

Other attacks have been directed at U.S. military installations and defense facilities. Official looking emails appear to come from a senior officer or other authority figure not known to the recipient, instructing the recipient to download and install software. This is often portrayed as a critical security measure that must be immediately deployed.

What actually happens is that the software is either a Trojan Horse that will destroy systems and networks, or data mining software that will now be past firewall defenses.

Phishers prey on greed, fear, and especially for military targets, obedience to authority. They have become increasingly sophisticated, and create official looking emails and design sites for gathering data.

Be wary of any unsolicited email that requests secure information or instructs you to download software. It is extremely rare for any financial institution including PayPal and Ebay to ask for such information. Check official websites for information on how to recognize fraudulent emails and sites--including military websites. Always get confirmation from a trusted source before downloading and installing software. If something doesn't seem quite right, it probably isn't.

Report: Russian spy chief joins nuclear missile firm

Russia's military intelligence chief has left his post at the helm of the country's biggest spying agency to join a company that develops nuclear missiles, Kommersant newspaper reported on Saturday.

Citing sources, Kommersant said General Alexander Shlyakhturov, who was appointed by President Dmitry Medvedev in April 2009, had left his role as head of GRU military intelligence service to head the board of OAO Korporatsiya MIT.

Known by its Russian acronym GRU, the military intelligence service has agents spread across the globe. It is so secretive that it does not have a spokesman or website. The Defense Ministry declined to comment.

Story: 'Russia will be free': Huge rally increases pressure on Vladimir Putin

Kommersant did not give a reason for Shlyakhturov's departure from GRU and it was not immediately clear if he had resigned or was merely being moved to keep a closer eye on the development of Russia's nuclear missiles, the cornerstone of Russia's defense capability.

Quality concerns
The failed launch of a military satellite which crashed into Siberia on Friday and a host of failures with a new generation, submarine-launched Bulava missile, has stoked concerns within the military about the quality of Russia's strategic missiles.

OAO Korporatsiya MIT develops missiles including the Bulava, which Russia test-fired successfully on Friday . Half of previous trials have failed.

Story: Who owns 69 Patriot missiles seized in Finland?

The top brass of GRU has opposed Kremlin-backed military reforms in the past, leading to the dismissal of Shlyakhturov's predecessor, General Valentin Korabelnikov.

However, Shlyakhturov is seen as an ally of Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, who has cut servicemen and reorganized the command structure of the armed forces.

The spy service, created in 1918 under revolutionary leader Leon Trotsky, answers to the chief of the general staff, one of the three people who control Russia's portable nuclear arsenal.

Unlike the Soviet-era KGB secret police, GRU was not split up when the Soviet Union collapsed.

Pet Holiday Travel: Airline Rules & Breed Restrictions | Thoughts Fur ...

Posted on December 22nd, 2011 in BISSELL Pack of Pet Lovers, Canine Corner, Cats, Dogs, Kitty Corner: Just for Cat Lovers, Poems, Stories, Cat Pictures & More, Pet Care, Pet Health Information, Pet Information, Pets in the News, Pit Bulls: Information, Breed Bans, Pictures and More

Every winter, thousands of people pack a suitcase and take to the skies to spend the holidays with their family and friends. Every traveler faces a packing dilemma as they corral their gifts and clothes into a portable format. Unfortunately, every pet owner faces another dilemma: how to transport Mr. Sprinkles or Miss Fluffy to their final holiday destination.

For many pet owners, the holidays would just not be the same without their four-legged family members. Some might even prefer their pets to their human family! But when the end of the year rolls around, many pet owners choose to leave their pets behind rather than subject them to the unpleasantness of a four hour flight in the cargo hold of a commercial airplane.

That is where private air travel can provide a flying experience that even the most finicky pure breeds will enjoy.

Unlike commercial flights, pets that fly on private aircraft are allowed to spend their trip in a luxurious cabin with their owners; both enjoy amazing views from 41,000 feet (give or take!). Some commercial airlines permit pets weighing less than 10 lbs to fly in a crate tucked under the seat in front of their owner, but this regulation leaves most cats and dogs shivering (or panting, depending on the flight locale) below decks with the luggage. Because to many airlines, that is just what pets are: cargo.

*On a commercial flight, any pets too large for cabin travel must be stored in a crate reading ?Live Animal: This Side Up? in letters at least one inch high, so at least the poor creatures do not get spun upside down or have suitcases placed on top of them.

*The pets must be given a temporary collar with the owner?s phone number and address on it, as well as the address and telephone number of the owner?s destination, in case the airline loses the animal in transit. A lost pet would cause nothing but worry, headache and paperwork; private air travel alleviates those worries by allowing owners to keep their pets with them the whole time.

On private flights, no health certificate or other documentation is required. If the animal gets sick (even just from nerves or anxiety) commercial airlines may refuse to transport them. For commercial flights, the pet?s nails must be trimmed, and they must arrive at the airport at least three hours but no more than four hours in advance of take-off. They must be fed within four hours of the flight, but not so recently that they will get sick mid-air. If the pet is nervous, he can be sedated, but according to the ASPCA and most airlines, sedation can cause serious and unpredictable complications in the low-oxygen cargo area. There is no way to know how the sedation has affected your animal until you arrive at your destination. A sick pet (or worse) is not likely to put anyone in the holiday spirit.

Finally, commercial flights have an incredible list of limitations on the types of pets that can travel. Pets must be over 8-weeks-old, so many brand new pet owners would be forced to leave their baby pet behind. Many airlines limit the total number of pets that can fly on any given airplane, so last-minute ticket changes might force Fido to stay behind if the new flight previously reached its pet-capacity.

Most importantly, there are restrictions that prevent many popular breeds of both dogs and cats from flying at all. Snub-nosed breeds?and mixed breeds?are in danger of developing breathing problems or overheating in the poorly ventilated cargo hold of an airplane. Sometimes these pets are simply discouraged from flying, but many popular airlines, are enforcing new rules that have banned these pets from flying at all.

Some breeds of dogs and cats to which this ban applies are:

?

  • Pekinese
  • Pug
  • Boxer
  • Boston Terrier
  • Chow Chow
  • All types of mastiffs and bulldogs

Cat Breeds:

  • Burmese
  • Himalayan
  • Persian

Since most of these pets are also too large to travel in the cabin of a commercial aircraft, their only hope of flying at all is a chartered flight.

The holiday season is hectic enough without the additional worry of losing or injuring your beloved pet while trying to visit out-of-town family.

To avoid some of the headache of flying with a pet, private aviation provides a safer and more pleasant alternative to a jumbo jet full of passengers and luggage (and hassle). As any pet owner knows, pets are a part of the family. They deserve to spend the holidays with us and travel with us without being treated like cargo.

Heavy snow closes roads, delays flights in West (AP)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Heavy snow from a winter storm blanketed parts of the West on Friday, stranding motorists throughout New Mexico and delaying holiday travelers trying to fly in and out of Albuquerque and Denver.

The snow and high winds struck the region Thursday and forced dozens of drivers off Interstate 40 after severe conditions made driving in western New Mexico nearly impossible.

"If you don't have (four-wheel drive) and you just have two-wheel ... you're either going to spin or stay stuck," stranded motorist Tarquin Wilding told KOAT-TV while in Grants, N.M., on his way to Santa Fe.

Grants and parts of western New Mexico were slammed with more than a foot of snow by Friday morning, the National Weather Service reported. A winter storm warning for the state expired in the afternoon, but meteorologists said the snow wasn't expected to clear up until the weekend.

Some parts of the state saw 17 inches of snow as state and local police responded to dozens of minor accidents. No major injuries were reported.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation closed parts of I-40 around Albuquerque and in eastern New Mexico because of poor driving conditions due to ice and heavy winds. State officials reopened the most of highway Friday afternoon.

Large portions of I-25 from Truth or Consequences to Las Cruces, and I-10 in western New Mexico also were closed, and authorities were urging motorists to seek shelter in hotels.

In El Paso, Texas, on Friday, a few inches of snow covered roads and yards Friday morning. Some sections of I-10 in the western part of the state were reduced to one lane as officers responded to a rash of accidents.

"We're seeing a lot of ice on the roads," said El Paso police spokesman Darrel Petry.

Snowfall was forecast for other West Texas cities and the central portion of the state by early Saturday. Houston, the Dallas-Fort Worth area and South Texas were expected to get rain on Christmas Eve.

In Rio Rancho, N.M., Police Officer Charles Ritter turned away motorist after motorist along U.S. 550, telling them that much of northwestern New Mexico had been shuttered by the storm.

"It's for their own safety," he said after one woman pleaded unsuccessfully to get past the roadblock so she could get to her father's home in Colorado.

Brian Shoemaker, of Albuquerque, was stuck in the line of motorists at the roadblock. He was heading to Colorado to spend Christmas with his family and unhappy to learn it would be early afternoon before he could drive again.

"Some places in Albuquerque it was horrible, and some places it was great. It's just real spotty," he said. "You'll move from good to bad within two-, three-mile sections."

Jim Hunsaker, a Union Pacific Railroad employee, had even farther to go. He hoped to get home to Salt Lake City, Utah, before Christmas Eve after spending several days working in New Mexico.

"It's mindboggling that they even close these roads. In Utah, this isn't nothing," he said of the conditions Friday morning. "We travel in conditions like this all the time, so it's kind of frustrating they've got me shut down here."

Caren Cowan, executive director of the New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association, said ranchers near Vaughn, N.M., sheltered a number of stranded travelers Thursday evening after heavy snow made roads in east-central New Mexico impassable. Ranchers also took precautions to protect livestock in rural areas in case snow drifts froze and trapped cattle away from unfrozen water.

In Colorado, operations at the Denver International Airport were getting back to normal after a storm that brought about 10 inches of snow. However, airport officials say passengers flying out Friday morning would still have deicing delays of about 25 minutes after leaving their gates.

About 100 flights were canceled at the Denver airport on Thursday because of the snow. A piece of snow removal equipment also struck a jet parked at a gate, forcing passengers on a Southwest Airlines flight to Los Angeles to switch to another plane.

Daniel Jiron, a spokesman for Albuquerque International Sunport, said the airport was seeing fewer delays Friday as conditions improved.

"We've had delays here and there but otherwise we're in good shape," Jiron said.

Anchorage, Alaska, got up to 14 inches of snow early Friday, but Alaska Airlines, the major carrier at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, only had minor delays.

Adam Lambert's Trespassing To Drop In March

The delayed For Your Entertainment follow-up sees Lambert working with the likes of Dr. Luke and Bruno Mars.
By James Montgomery

Adam Lambert
Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images

He's already referred to it as his "dream" album and as "existential pop," but now we know what Adam Lambert will actually be calling his sophomore album: Trespassing.

That's according to a press release sent out by his label, RCA, which not only announced the title of Lambert's follow-up to For Your Entertainment but revealed that the much-delayed disc would finally be hitting stores on March 20. The news came one day after Lambert unveiled a snippet of the album's first single, "Better Than I Know Myself."

Lambert serves as executive producer on the new album, which he describes as "an exciting journey through the past two years of my life. It's been a transformative period and I really wanted to make music from what I've experienced. All these songs honestly explore the ups and downs of my reality."

He also co-wrote most of the record, collaborating with a (seriously) loaded roster of talented hitmakers that includes Dr. Luke, Bruno Mars, Pharrell Williams, Benny Blanco, Nile Rodgers and Claude Kelly.

And while his Glamberts will still have to wait until March to hear Trespassing, the simple fact that there's an actual release date for the album is probably good enough for now, given that for months it looked like the album might not come out at all. In November, Lambert spoke to The Advocate about the delays that had beset the project, which included some, uh, issues with RCA and a whole lot of tinkering to make his new songs right.

"I don't know how other artists do it, but for this project, I'm adopting the mentality of 'just keep writing and keep recording as much as possible,' " he said. "And then when we know that we're ready to decide which tracks are going to be on the album, we'll look at everything and narrow it down."

Cholesterol-lowering drugs may reduce mortality for influenza patients

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Statins, traditionally known as cholesterol-lowering drugs, may reduce mortality among patients hospitalized with influenza, according to a new study released online by The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

It is the first published observational study to evaluate the relationship between statin use and mortality in hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infection, according to Vanderbilt's William Schaffner, M.D., professor and chair of Preventive Medicine.

"We may be able to combine statins with antiviral drugs to provide better treatment for patients seriously ill with influenza," said Schaffner, who co-authored the study led by Meredith Vandermeer, MPH, of the Oregon Public Health Division.

Researchers studied adults who were hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza from 2007-2008 to evaluate the association between patients who were prescribed statins and influenza-related deaths.

Among 3,043 hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza, 33 percent were given statin medications prior to or during hospitalization. After adjusting for various factors, researchers found that patients not receiving statins were almost twice as likely to die from influenza as those who received the medication.

Schaffner stressed that receiving the influenza vaccine each year is still the best defense against influenza. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 5 percent and 20 percent of U.S. residents get the flu each year, and more than 20,000 persons are hospitalized for flu-related complications.

Shares in Olympus dive on balance sheet worries (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Shares in Japan's scandal-ridden Olympus Corp slumped almost 20 percent on Thursday after it corrected its accounts to reveal a dramatically weakened balance sheet, stoking talk that it might need to merge, sell assets or raise fresh capital.

The maker of cameras and medical equipment ironed out its accounts on Wednesday, unwinding a 13-year book-keeping fraud that came to light in October, and showing that its net assets were $1.1 billion less than it had previously disclosed.

For a graphic, click on http://link.reuters.com/pyt55s

"The stock has been overpriced but after the company came out with their numbers yesterday, it was time for shareholders to decide whether to hold on, or dump the shares," said Masayoshi Okamoto, head of dealing at Jujiya Securities, adding that a recent rally was largely due to short-term speculation.

"A lot of people are disposing of their shares while the price is still inflated," he added.

Olympus avoided an automatic delisting from the Tokyo Stock Exchange by meeting Wednesday's deadline for producing its overdue second-quarter accounts, giving some initial relief to investors who had feared it might miss the deadline.

But the focus has since turned to the true financial state of the 92-year-old firm and whether the large misstatements it had made in its previous accounts might be sufficiently large to still leave its listing status in doubt. The exchange can decide to delist if it believes the deceit was grave enough.

Investors want to know how the firm will recapitalize and whether there are plans to sell its struggling camera business, and not least of all who will actually run Olympus in future, given its existing board has committed to resign soon.

Ousted Olympus CEO Michael Woodford, who blew the whistle on a $1.7 billion scheme to hide investment losses and is now lobbying shareholders to get his old job back, said on Wednesday he was thinking about options for recapitalizing the company.

He did not give a direct estimate of the sum he felt would be needed but gave an example of how Olympus' strong underlying business would ensure a return on any fresh investment.

"For example, if you put $2 billion into the company, the value of the company would probably go up more than $2 billion," he said in an Internet broadcast.

Olympus shares finished were down about 17 percent at 1,090 yen, after hitting a low of 1,056 yen. The stock has lost more than half its value since the scandal erupted in mid-October, when Olympus sacked Woodford who then blew the whistle on the company's dubious book-keeping.

Since then, two top Olympus executives were found to have masterminded the scheme to cook the books. These executives have since resigned.

CAPITAL BASE

Woodford, who is assembling his own team of candidates for a new board, said he favored private equity or a rights issue over a strategic alliance, which would rob Olympus of its independence.

But rights issues, where existing shareholders are entitled to buy additional shares on a pro-rata basis, are rare in Japan.

Olympus President Shuichi Takayama has said he may sell assets or accept a capital tie-up to bolster the capital base.

Olympus has been dogged by rumors of bid interest from rivals, such as fellow endoscope makers Fujifilm and Hoya, or from private equity since the scandal broke.

The Tokyo exchange said after the announcements that it was keeping Olympus on its watchlist for possible delisting.

Some of the restated accounts also came with qualified opinions from auditors, with KPMG AZSA LLC noting it had been unable to confirm all the money flows involved in the fraud.

In addition to the immediate financing concerns over Olympus, the company also faces a possible proxy battle. The existing board wants to choose its own successors before quitting, potentially rivaling Woodford's comeback campaign.

On Thursday, Olympus said it aimed to hold an extraordinary meeting of shareholders in March or April to vote in new directors, though Woodford wants one by February. Neither he nor the existing board has announced its slate of candidates yet.
