China Insights: Unsettling Consequences | Asian American Press ...

Exhibition photo by Jia Yu Chuan.

A group exhibition of contemporary photography from The People?s Republic of China, curated by Gu Zheng and A. D. Coleman, will run from August 2-25, 2011 in the Katherine E. Nash Gallery of the Regis Center for Art, University of Minnesota, 405 ? 21st Avenue South, Minneapolis.?The Opening Reception will be held Thur., Aug. 11, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tues. through Sat. All events at the Regis Center for Art are free and open to the public.

China Insights: Unsettling Consequences brings together the work of seven photographers from mainland China: Chen Yuan Zhong, Hua Er, Jia Yu Chuan, Li Nan, Yang Yan Kang, Yu Haibo, and Zhang Xinmin.

Each has undertaken the creation of a long-term documentation of one or more aspects of Chinese culture that reflects something vital about China now ? whether that is something emerging or something vanishing. Collectively, these photographers have numerous publications, exhibitions, and awards to their credit, but until now little of their work has appeared outside mainland China.

Six of the seven ? Chen Yuan Zhong, Hua Er, Jia Yu Chuan, Yang Yan Kang, Yu Haibo, and Zhang Xinmin ? are based in Shenzhen. Just across the border from Hong Kong in southern China, Shenzhen was the first of the Special Economic Opportunity Zones established by China in the post-Mao era, as magnets for entrepreneurs and educated people in all fields.

In 1980 Shenzhen was a fishing and farming community with a population of roughly 20,000. Today it is a world-renowned center for printing and information technology among other industries. Shenzhen is a booming 21st-century metropolis.

The residents? average age is 30 years and the population exceeds 13 million people. As such, it serves as a microcosm revealing many of the dramatic cultural, political and demographics shifts in contemporary China.

The exhibition?s organizational structure moves from the rural scene to the metropolitan context, echoing developments in China today. While some of these photographers focus on aspects of life in their home city, others look at situations outside of Shenzhen.

Their themes include rural Catholicism, matrilineal culture in an agrarian setting, the population shift from country to city, prostitution, gender and identity, typologies of urban citizenry, and the emergence of a thriving pop music/club scene as an index of internationalization. The exhibition includes 150 photographs and is equally divided among the seven participating photographers.

Yang Yan Kang: Faith of a Village, is a freelance editorial and commercial photographer, Yang Yan Kang has pursued several long-term, self-funded projects.

Exhibition photo by Yang Yan Kang.

These include studies of Tibetan life and the project excerpted here: a scrutiny of life in a small Catholic village in the Yellow River area of Shaanxi province of north China.

Yang has visited this area repeatedly over the past decade, familiarizing himself with the ways in which these people?s religious convictions ? presently tolerated, previously oppressed ? weave through their daily lives. Born in Guizhou province in 1954, Yang is a member of the French picture agency VU. In 2001 and 2002 he was named one of the ten best photographers in China by She Ying Zhi You magazine.

Hua Er: Mother to Daughter, is an independent anthropologist who has concentrated her attention on a matrilineal culture of long standing, a rare phenomenon in Chinese society.

Located in Lijiazui, a village situated between Tibet, Yunnan province, and Sichuan province in southwest China, this clan-based matriarchal social structure removes men from any direct involvement with their own children, shifting their familial roles to emphasis on their relationships as uncles to their sisters? children.

The marginalization of men and the empowerment of women are the main themes of Hua?s study. Hua supports herself as a freelance writer on assorted subjects.

Zhang Xinmin: Country to City, is about escaping from the drudgery of peasant life to the metropolis and the dream of China?s booming economy, and more about wht it represents as upward mobility has become increasingly possible, but undependable.

Zhang Xinmin, long-time staff photographer for a Shenzhen newspaper, has persistently tracked the transition of working-class Chinese, most of them former farmers and agricultural workers, revealing the details of their individual struggles for survival and success in this new environment. Born in 1952, Zhang is now Visual Supervisor for the Shekou News, a daily in Shenzhen, a position he assumed in 1994.

Chen Yuan Zhong: Young Pros, Oldest Profession, is about prostitution, once easily policed in the countryside, is has now become a fact of life in urban settings everywhere.

In a city like Shenzhen, where residence permits require legal employment, prostitutes, pimps and their customers play a risky age-old game of hide and seek with the authorities. Chen Yuan Zhong follows the trail of this illicit trade from the streets and the daily life of sex workers through police raids, the court system, prison, and efforts at rehabilitation.

Born in 1970, Chen is Picture Director for the Shenzhen Evening News. In 1998 he was selected for participation in the month-long Joop Swart Master Class at World Press Photo in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Jia Yu Chuan: Bending Gender, is about urbanization and how it has provided personal and social options not readily available in rural contexts, including the creation of such microcultures as the transvestite-transsexual community of Shenzhen that Jia sympathetically observes in this series. The pictures investigate his subjects? private lives, their process of self-transformation, and their self-presentation in public.

Born in Chongqing Municipality in 1961, Jia graduated from the Journalism Department of Wuhan University in 1999, and now works as a staff photographer for a Shenzhen newspaper group. He has won several national awards for news photography.

Li Nan: Urban Identities, concerns the social types in China?s cities. And like Neal Slavin, he seeks meaning in the ways that people present themselves publicly in groups.

In this series of formal, posed group portraits Li surveys clusters of city dwellers ? from chicken pluckers to Party officials, and from construction workers to opera singers ??consciously registering their appearances for posterity in his images.

Exhibition photo by Li Nan.

Born in Jinan City, Shandong province in 1961, Li Nan is a staff photographer for the Dazhong Daily. He has won many awards both inside and outside China, including first prize in the Art category from World Press Photo in 1996.

Yu Haibo: Night Moves, features this staff photographer for the Shenzhen Economic Daily, who also pursues his own photographic interests when not on the job. In this suite of dramatic color images he explores the contemporary pop music scene in Shenzhen, with its rock musicians, club kids, mosh pits, and riotous environments ? an increasingly common feature of urban culture worldwide.

Born in Henan in 1962, Yu won the China Photojournalists? Golden Eye Prize and the second prize in the Arts and Entertainment category from the 2005 World Press Photo Awards in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Curator Gu Zheng was born in 1959, and is a photographer, critic, historian, curator, and educator. As an Associate Professor in the School of Journalism at Fudan University in Shanghai, he serves as Vice-Director of the university?s Research Center for Visual Culture.

Zheng has been in contact with American photography since the middle of the 1970s, when he resided in the U.S. A long-time friend of the historian of photography Beaumont Newhall, he studied under him at the University of Albuquerque in 1979. Gu has published numerous books of his own writings on photography, and in 2001 received the Chinese Photography Golden Figure Prize in Theory and Criticism.

In 2001 and 2003 he was honored with an Art Critic Awards from the Association of Chinese Literature and Art. Additionally, Gu has translated into Chinese many texts on photography, from classical to postmodern. He has curated several group exhibitions of Chinese photography for venues in China, South Korea, and the United States.

Curator A.D. Coleman is a prolific writer of photography history and criticism who has published widely since the 1960s. Born in 1943, he is based in New York City. During the 1960s and 1970s, Coleman was a regular columnist for the Village Voice, Popular Photography, The New York Times and Camera 35.

His books include The Grotesque in Photography (1977), Light Readings: A Photography Critic?s Writings (1979), Critical Focus: Photography in the International Community (1995) and The Digital Evolution: Photography in the Electronic Age, Essays, Lectures and Interviews, 1967-1997 (1998). Curatorial projects include Testimonies: Photography and Social Issues (Houston Fotofest International 1990) and SAGA: The Journey of Arno Rafael Minkkinen (FEP, 2005, co-curated with Todd Brandow). He received the first Art Critic?s Fellowship ever awarded in photography by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1976, and a major Hasselblad Foundation Grant in 1991. A Fulbright Senior Scholar in Sweden in 1994, he received the prestigious Kulturpreis der Deutschen Gesellschaft f?r Photographie (The Culture Award of the German Photographic Society) for 2002.

A related exhibitions, ?Transitions?, is an exhibition of photographs by high school students in the Twin Cities metro area, will be presented in the Quarter Gallery also located in the Regis Center for Art. Gallery hours: August 2-25, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cheap Verizon Cell Phones Discount Wholesale - China Cell Phone Review

Buying cheap Verizon cell phones can save you a lot of money while gettign the phone and its features you like. It is definitely way cheaper than buying at retail shops. Not to mention that you can save so much more when you buy cheap Verizon cell phones without a contract or plan.It is important to learn the technology your carrier uses when you shop for cheap Verizon Wireless cell phones. Verizon uses Electronic Security Numbers to register and identify cell phones to the user. It is also important to know the network technology your desired cell phone you wish to buy is using. The common 2 network technologies are Code Division Multiple Access and Global System for Mobile Communications .Virgin Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint uses the former technology while brands like T-Mobile and AT&T uses GSM. So if you happen to buy a phone that isn?t Verizon but for Sprint or Virgin Mobile, it is perfectly ok as they all use the same network technology. You can buy cheap Verizon Cell Phones in places like second-hand shops, Walmart, and even Amazon. But for future convenience sake, if you do shop online for Verizon Cell Phones, make sure the carrier?s name or brand is stated there. For instance: Motorola DROID X Android Phone , HTC DROID INCREDIBLE Android Phone , .etc.Do read the reviews whenever possible to see if the seller is reputable or trustworthy when you shop online for cheap cell phones. Usually only those who have bought from the buyer are allowed to leave a review afterwards, and you can be assured that such reviews are unbiased and honest. Also, lookout for any exchange or refund policy. But do keep in mind that when you?re shopping for cheap Verizon Cell Phones, there usually isn?t any refund policy and that is teh reason why it is cheap. From my experience, I would recommend that you buy cheap Verizon cell phones online than buying at retail shops, second-hand shops, or wherever. The reasons are because like I?ve said in the previous paragraph, you can look up at unbiased reviews from the other ?after-buyers? to see if the seller is good and usable for your carrier, and so forth. Also, do you do not know or be guaranteed if those phones that are sold at second-hand shops or wherever are not replica products.I hope this article has given you some insights when you?re shopping for cheap Verizon Wholesale cell phones.

World Bank urges China to tackle diseases (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? The World Bank on Tuesday urged China to step up efforts to fight chronic diseases, the main cause of death in the country, warning of rising health expenditure and an economic slowdown if rapid action is not taken.

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) -- such as lung cancer, stroke, heart disease and diabetes -- account for over 80 percent of all deaths in the world's most populous nation, the World Bank said in a report on non-communicable diseases in China.

The report warned that "a reduced ratio of healthy workers to sicker, older dependents will certainly increase the odds of a future economic slowdown and pose a significant social challenge" in the world's second-largest economy.

"The issue that should concern all of us is with the growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases, that will imply more people using expensive and costly hospital care for long periods of time," said Patricio Marquez, a World Bank lead health specialist and co-author of the report at a news conference in Beijing.

"The key issue facing society as a whole is how to control the escalation of healthcare costs," he said. "One could say that if unchecked, this would make the current reforms unsustainable."

China launched a $125 billion healthcare reform plan in 2009 to try and extend health insurance and basic health care to all of its people.

Out-of-pocket payments, which represent 37 percent of total health expenditure, will continue to rise, said Shiyong Wang, a World Bank senior health specialist and co-author of the report.

Richard Yeh, a healthcare analyst with Citigroup in Hong Kong, said the rising healthcare costs will have broader implications for the Chinese government, which is aiming to reduce the economy's dependence on export earnings.

"Part of the reason that people don't want to spend is because the healthcare system is not taking care of the entire healthcare bill for the people," he said.

"If there's no strong national healthcare supporting system, people will continue to have a high savings rate. That will definitely ... hold up national consumption."

The World Bank report said China's "healthcare system is not responding effectively" to tackle non-communicable diseases, which is why the country's deaths from those diseases are higher than other leading G20 countries.

For example, China's mortality rate for strokes is four to six times higher than that in Japan and the United States.

A rapidly aging population and more sedentary lifestyles, with bad diets and lack of exercise, were also factors contributing to the increasing rates of the diseases, the report said.

The World Bank report said that the economic benefit of reducing cardiovascular diseases by one percent per year from 2010-2040 could generate more than $10.7 trillion, equivalent to 68 percent of China's real GDP in 2010.

The World Bank estimates that without action, China will lose $550 billion in national income between 2005 and 2015 due to heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

INCREASE TAXES

Fifty percent of the risk factors of non-communicable diseases can be prevented by the adoption of certain measures, which would cost the Chinese government $220 per capita per year, Marquez said.

One way was to increase taxes on tobacco to create "an economic disincentive for people to smoke," he said.

Excise taxes on cigarettes in China are less than 30 percent, far lower than Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, where they hover around 65-80 percent, he said.

China has the world's largest number of smokers, with more than 300 million smokers. It is also the world's largest cigarette producer and has embarked on years of half-hearted campaigns to stub out the habit in some cities.

China's health ministry said it will ban smoking at all indoor public venues from May.

Restricting access to alcohol, introducing taxes on unhealthy food and cutting salt in food would also prevent non-communicable diseases, the report said.

Security chief: Norway attacks work of lone man (AP)

OSLO, Norway ? The man who admitted killing 76 people in a bombing and youth camp massacre last week is a sociopath who acted without accomplices or a network of like-minded right-wing extremists, and kept his plans to himself for more than a decade, Norway's top police official said Thursday.

Levels of right-wing violence across Europe have been generally low and there are no clear indications of imminent danger from networks of extremists, security officials said. But they expressed concern that Norway attacker Anders Behring Breivik could inspire imitators among the continent's extremist, anti-immigrant fringe. Particularly worrying are similar loners who give no clues of their intentions to others before acting, officials said.

European Union counterterrorism officials held a special meeting with Norwegian representatives Thursday dedicated to preventing future extreme-right attacks, saying they would try to share information faster and better understand what triggers the rare radical to turn to violence.

"Clearly, one major risk is that somebody may actually try to mount a similar attack as a copycat attack or as a way of showing support," said Tim Jones, principal adviser to the EU's counterterrorism coordinator.

Police were on high alert across Europe: Finnish officers said they had arrested an 18-year-old man who ordered 22 pounds (10 kilograms) of fertilizer from Poland to build make explosives. Police said the case appeared to have no connections to the massacre; the national broadcaster YLE cited police as saying the man told them he wanted to make fireworks.

Breivik claims he carried out the July 22 attacks as part of a network of modern-day crusaders plotting a revolution against a multicultural Europe, and that there are other cells ready to strike.

But investigators have found no signs ? before or after the attacks ? of a larger conspiracy, Janne Kristiansen, the director of the Norwegian Police Security Service told The Associated Press.

"It's a unique case. It's a unique person. He is total evil," she said. "On the information we have so far, and I emphasize so far, we have no indication that he was part of a network or had any accomplices, or that there are other cells."

Kristiansen told AP Breivik doesn't appear to have shared his plot with anyone, and lived an outwardly lawful and moderate life before carrying out the attacks with "total precision."

Europol, the European police agency said it had agreed with police chiefs from Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Poland, Sweden and Britain that its operations center in The Hague, Netherlands, would be expanded to include their senior experts.

The agency said that team would "urgently assess the wider implications of the incidents in terms of the threat from right-wing extremism across Europe."

The new network held its first meeting Wednesday, Europol said.

Europol's 2010 report, which covers the calendar year 2009, says there were four failed, foiled or successful right-wing attacks in 2009, all of them in Hungary.

Two security officials said there didn't appear to be any imminent threats associated with Breivik to countries around Europe, but that didn't mean a regional investigation would be ended. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.

Experts said Breivek was successful in his attacks partially because he did act alone.

"The Norwegians have his computer," said Bob Ayers, a London-based former U.S. intelligence officer. "If there was significant dialogue, there would have been a footprint. Acting alone gave him the advantage of not being watched by security personnel.

Breivik has admitted that he set off a car bomb in the government district of Oslo, killing at least eight people, then drove several miles (kilometers) northwest of the Norwegian capital to an island where the youth wing of the ruling Labor Party was holding its annual summer camp. He arrived at Utoya island posing as a police officer, then opened fire on scores of unsuspecting youth, executing them one after the other as they tried to flee into the water. Sixty-eight people died, many of them teenagers.

There has been no large-scale violence by the right-wing in Germany in years, but the Office for the Protection of the Constitution said it considered some 9,500 of the far-right in Germany as potentially violent, "with the readiness to use violence to achieve their political goals on the rise," the Office for the Protection of the Constitution said.

German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich told the Rheinische Post newspaper after the attacks that Germany's intelligence agencies had the far-right groups under "intensive" surveillance, but that they were still a danger.

"Among the right extremists we know of some who could be dangerous, but they're not the problem ? those who we have an eye on ? but rather those who radicalize in secret."

Investigators will interview Breivik again on Friday and will focus on whether there is "any more danger," police attorney Paal-Fredrick Hjort Kraby told reporters.

Police have not turned up any signs that copycat attacks might be committed, Kraby said.

But they are clearly concerned. Kraby said Brevik's next hearing will be closed "just in case he's able to send messages by code" to associates.

Police have so far only interviewed the Norwegian suspect once, in a seven-hour session the day after the attack. Kraby said Breivik is in contact only with his lawyer and investigators. He also said the Norwegian police have been in touch with the FBI regarding the attacks, but he did not elaborate.

The national sense of heartbreak is being renewed daily as police slowly release names of the dead. Later Thursday, 24 names were added to the list, including 23-year old Tamta Lipartelliani from Georgia who died at the camp, setting the confirmed total by police at 41.

Advanced Phone Systems for Better Business Communication | Altegen ...

Advanced Phone Systems for Better Business Communication

Business telephone systems play a vital role in effective communication of businesses because of their high performance, security and more number of features than any other ordinary communication devices. One-time investment done by the companies or organizations for these advanced phone systems can not only make the communication easier, but also, more professional among the staff or with the customers of the company. Different types of telephone system are available to cater the needs and fulfill the demands of small, medium and large enterprises. A business telephone system often provides additional features related to call handling, Computer telephony Integration (CTI), VoIP multi-site networking, WiFi, paging, intercom, voicemail with e-mail integration, advanced data networking and many other advanced features.

Computer telephony Integration (CTI) technology allows integration of interactions on a telephone and a computer system. CTI has a number of common desktop and server based features like computer controlled automatic dailing (preview dialing, power dialing and predictive dialing), call information display, phone control system (phone answering, phone hang up, phone conferencing, phone holding and call forwarding), coordinated phone and data transfering, allowing users to login as call center agents for call handling, automatic call routing, advanced call reporting and voice recording.

These advanced phone system can be installed at offices, buildings and within the company or organization. Easy communication, security, reduced expenditures, easy installation and handling are some of the advantages of using these phone systems over other ordinary phones. These telephone systems can be classified into three categories:

Key Pad systems: These systems allows the used to see and control the calls directly and manually. The modern versions of these phones systemhave advanced features like answering machine funcations, speed dailing, automatic call accounting, caller ID, remote supervision and station specific limitations.

Hybrid systems: These systems work on the lines of traditional phone systems with the integration of VoIP (Voice over internet protocol) technology. The features of hybrid systems include intercom functionality, integrated voice mail services like remote notification and text message alerts, caller identification, call forwarding, call transferring, call routing and remote connectivity.

Private Branch Systems (PBX): Private branch systems are telephone exchange systems that are used in big business enterprises and makes the users (staff or employees) share a common phone line for communicating with each-other and for making the calls outside the company or organization as well. They are relatively cost-effective and easy to use phone systems. This system connects employees or staff people of an organization through extension code numbers for any particular department within the organization and eliminates the need of installing individual phone lines for each employee.

It is important to access the needs and requirement of your business model while selecting the perfect phone system for your company. For a small business model, too many features in a phone system can prove to be a costly affair. And for a large enterprise level business model, less featured phone system would not be able to fulfill the requirements. Therefore, expert advice from a professional person can guide you in making the right choice for the perfect business phone system.

The Nook finally bests the Kindle

For the first time since the Kindle's release, Consumer Reports reviews favor another e-reader.

Ever since e-readers hit the mainstream, the Amazon Kindle has been the market leader, both in terms of functionality and popularity. However, according to a recent Consumer Report, the new Nook Simple Touch from Barnes & Noble is now getting more love from users.

The Simple Touch seems to have the best of all worlds: Unlike the Kindle, it has a touch screen, which makes for easier navigation and eliminates the need for a bulky physical keyboard. This new Nook is competitively priced to match the Kindle, features an easy to read E-Ink screen, turns pages faster, weighs less than the Kindle, and has up to two months of battery life.

Given Consumer Reports' reputation for honest technology reviews, their vote of confidence for the new Nook could take a bite out of Kindle sales.

The one downside to the new Simple Touch Nook is ? of course ? that it doesn't have the vast Amazon bookstore behind it. Amazon handily beats Barnes & Noble in terms of its supply of e-books, and e-books bought for the Kindle cannot be transferred to a Nook.

What does this mean for you? Well, if you're in the market for a fast, lightweight, and easy-to-use e-reader, then the Nook Simple Touch may be your best bet. If you want the ability to listen to MP3s and browse the Web between e-books, and prefer Amazon's expansive e-books selection, then stick with the Kindle, which Monitor contributor Colby Bermel wholeheartedly recommends.

Best of the Big Apple: 2011 New York Summer Highlights (PHOTOS)

(Via Mutual Art)

In keeping with tradition, the art world has taken its usual late-summer vacation, with many venues and events on hiatus in July and August. Major auctions houses close their doors until September, while gallery openings and exhibits tend to cool off until the fall frenzy.

Unless of course, you live in New York, where the art world (like the city itself) never sleeps.

And certainly, New York is where it?s at this summer. If you happen to be in NYC, consider yourself lucky, as there are a variety of art events to keep you both cool and entertained. To escape the sweltering heat, why not buck tradition and head to one of the city?s many spectacular summer shows?

As self-professed art enthusiasts, we rounded up a list of our favorite exhibits happening in the Big Apple this summer. From the cutting-edge new media works of Ryan Trecartin to the vast collection of modern masterpieces owned by the Cone sisters, New York shows have something for everyone, guaranteed to please any art-lover?s palette. Many of the exhibitions on our radar pay homage to the city that continues to inspire the artists that inhabit this bustling metropolis. Ai Weiwei?s exhibit and Anthony Caro?s sculpture show are two prime examples - both highlight the attributes of the city in very different ways, celebrating what makes New York the place to be for art and culture.

Here?s MutualArt?s prized summer picks: what to see and where to be in the city that never sleeps.

Ryan Trecartin: Any Ever
at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center
June 19, 2011 - September 3, 2011
He?s the golden boy of new media, making innovations in the often coinciding disciplines of art and cinema, and he continues to make waves after his 21st century debut. Ryan Trecartin?s Any Ever is now appearing at P.S.1. Contemporary Art Center, officially marking the New York premiere of the artist?s 2007-2010 works, produced in Miami with collaborator Lizzie Fitch.

Featured in the venue?s main gallery on the 1st floor are the non-chronological series of seven movies, structurally conceived in two parts that feature a trilogy (Trill-ogy Comp (2009)) and a quartet (Re'Search Wait'S (2009-10), video still pictured above). The films are intertwined both literally - through the showrooms - and figuratively - by recurring themes, motifs, and characters in the movies themselves. In the tradition of his other works, Any Ever exemplifies themes of identity, narrative and language through Trecartin?s darkly humorous interpretations of visual culture in media.

Ostalgia
at the New Museum
July 6, 2011 - September 25, 2011
Bringing together the work of over fifty artists from twenty countries across Eastern Europe, Ostalgia is a show about reflections, wistfulness, and of course, nostalgia. The title of the show is derived from the German word ?ostalgie?, a term that emerged in the 1990s after the collapse of the Communist Bloc. ?Ostalgie? refers to a sense of longing and nostalgia for the era preceding the fall of communism, which saw many countries dissolved, their pasts essentially erased as their constitutions and histories were rewritten. (Below (left): U.F.O-NAUT J.K. a (U.F.O.), by Julius Koller, 1987; (right) Untitled, from the "Ogonyok" series, by Sergey Zarva, 2001).

The exhibit mixes the private and public aspects of this transition, and examines the conflict between self and community in a post-communist society. The artists exhibiting in this unique show exemplify the unique position of art in cultures that have been forced, quite literally, to continuously redefine and recreate themselves. ?Ostalgia? celebrates art as a transforming and healing power in the reconstruction of a nation?s identity, and how the individual - as artist - can utilize this discipline as a platform for change.

Ai Weiwei: New York Photographs
at Asia Society and Museum
June 29, 2011 - August 14, 2011
Between 1983 and 1993, controversial Chinese artist Ai Weiwei lived in New York?s East Village, where he used his camera to capture his surroundings. The Asia Society and Museum presents rarely-seen photographs shot by the artist during the first decade of his prolific career, depicting his life amongst Chinese artists and intellectuals in the flourishing art scene. ?These photographs are a poignant and powerful chronicle of Ai?s artistic vision and emerging political consciousness during his time in New York,? museum Director Melissa Chiu says. ?Ai Weiwei is one of the most provocative and influential conceptual artists from China today, and in recent years he has become an increasingly iconic figure... As an artist, his work has stood for individual expression and we hope his recent release, following nearly three months in detention in China, has delivered a new promise of creative potential for him and other artists there.?

The exhibition presents 227 photographs which the artist selected from his archive of 10,000 stills. These works capture the history, culture and atmosphere of 1980's New York from Ai Weiwei?s unique perspective. Notably, this show marks the first time Ai Weiwei?s New York Photographs series is being shown outside of China.

El Museo's Bienal: The (S) Files 2011
at El Museo del Barrio
June 14, 2011 - January 8, 2012
Now back for its 6th year, the El Museo Bienal showcases the innovative art of Latino, Caribbean and Latin American contemporary artists working in the New York area. Curated by Elvis Fuentes, Roc?o Aranda-Alvarado, and Trinidad Fombella with guest curator, Juanita Berm?dez, this year?s Bienal features a record 75 rising artists whose works are dispersed throughout seven different venues.

The title of this edition of the Bienal is The (S) Files 2011, which focuses on the culture and environment of the street - from street art to graffiti and mural work as well as non-traditional art pieces - and incorporates other disciplines within this theme, including fashion and music. This topic explores how the conflict between public and private sectors is influenced by street culture, depicting how the early New York art movements had an impact on urban life. The artists featured in this cutting-edge exhibit utilize these social factors in their work, blurring the boundaries between the individual and the community while analyzing urban life - and the street - as a catalyst for change in mainstream society. Addressing issues from daily life interactions to economic problems and social issues, this show represents how urban style has developed as a platform for artists to creatively express their reactions to modern conflicts.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty
at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
May 4, 2011 - August 7, 2011
Alexander McQueen was more than just a fashion designer - he was an artist. And The Met wholeheartedly agrees: Organized by the Costume Institute, the current exhibit Savage Beauty pays tribute to the late designer?s remarkable contributions to the fashion world. This innovative artist revolutionized the fashion industry, incorporating art, history and culture into his designs. The exhibition features an array of the designer?s most celebrated works (approx. 100 samples), stemming from his 1992 post-graduate collection to the pieces from his final runway show, held shortly after his death in February 2010.

McQueen's designs are unique reflections of past eras, glamorized and transformed to fit seamlessly in a modern context, while challenging traditional ideas of gender, culture and politics. His pieces emphasize the exaggerated silhouettes of the Victorian era and the 1950s, which he crafted into contemporary silhouettes that transmit romantic narratives. The exhibit highlights the reason McQueen?s fashion continues to be celebrated as wearable art: The technical ingenuity imbued his creations with an innovative sensibility that keeps his designs at fashion's vanguard. As curator Andrew Bolton elaborates, ?McQueen was a remarkable craftsman. He was able to channel the skills of his craft, but also to use fashion as a vehicle to express very complex ideas and concepts. And I think in this particular exhibition, and in this gallery in particular, you see how McQueen would master the crafts of his trade and subvert them.?

Otherworldly: Optical Delusions and Small Realities
at the Museum of Arts and Design
June 7, 2011 - September 18, 2011
?Magic Realism? is the term that best encapsulates the theme behind this very unusual show, now running through September 18th at MAD. This one-of-a-kind exhibit highlights the extraordinary resurgence amongst artists of interest in creating small-scale representations of alternate realities and environments. Using a variety of media, such as sculpture, photography and video, the works are tiny worlds presented as models, dioramas, and small-scale site-specific installations. There is an incredible attention to detail, illustrating the intense interaction these contemporary ?creators? must have experienced when constructing these other realities.

Collecting Matisse and Modern Masters: The Cone Sisters of Baltimore
at The Jewish Museum
May 6, 2011 - Sept 25, 2011
Featuring 51 stellar modern masterpieces by artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, and Gauguin, the Cone Sisters? collection showcases paintings, sculptures, works on paper and more on loan from the Baltimore Museum of Art. Also featured in the museum galleries is an interactive virtual tour of the sisters adjoining Baltimore apartments, showing their remarkable collection as it was displayed in their home, displaying the artworks, objects, and textiles produced by some of the most celebrated modern artists.

Claribel and Etta Cone of Baltimore traveled to Paris in the early 1900s, where they visited the studios of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. At the time, critics were largely disdainful of Matisse?s work, a fact that did little to influence Etta?s opinion: upon meeting the artist in 1906, Etta became one of his first patrons, having developed a passion for his paintings. Henri Matisse fondly called Dr. Claribel and Miss Etta Cone ?my two Baltimore ladies,? and in addition to a lifelong friendship, the sisters continued collecting Matisse?s work throughout his career. In the years to come, Claribel and Etta frequently traveled to Paris and became immersed in the avante-garde circle of artists and writers, many of whom later became famous, including writers Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemmingway, as well as artists Pablo Picasso, Auguste Renoir, and Paul Gauguin. The Cone sisters continued avidly collecting the works of Matisse, Picasso and their compatriots, assembling what is considered to be one of the most important French Modern Art collections in the United States.

Frans Hals in the Metropolitan Museum
at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
July 26, 2011 - October 10, 2011
From July 26th, The Met is showcasing the museum?s most impressive collection by celebrated artist Frans Hals, long hailed as the most important group of paintings in the United States by the Dutch master. Hals? portrait and genre paintings were renown during his lifetime for their splendid brushwork and likeness, and this exhibition highlights 13 of the artist?s most memorable works, including Merrymakers at Shrovetide (pictured below) and Yonker Ramp and His Sweetheart.

Also included in the exhibition will be two loans from private collections in New York?the small, stunning Portrait of Samuel Ampzing (1630), on copper, as well as the celebrated Fisher Girl (1630-32). A selection of other Dutch paintings from the museum's collection and a few engravings will place Hals' work in the context of his native Haarlem and will reinforce the extraordinary mastery at that time of his animated poses and virtuoso brushwork. The effect of Hals? work extended past the artist?s lifetime, as demonstrated via the Impressionist painter Manet, whose Hals-inspired portrait will also be featured in the exhibit.

Anthony Caro on the Roof
at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
April 26, 2011 - October 30, 2011
This exhibition displays the unique creations of British sculptor Anthony Caro in an equally innovative setting: outside of the museum, in The Met?s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, harmonizing the architectural elements of Caro?s work. Caro has been hailed by critics as one of the most influential and visionary sculptors of his generation, playing an integral role in the development of modernist sculpture. 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the artist?s first steel sculpture exhibition, and his pieces continue to have the same dramatic affect on viewers in the 21st century. The installation features various painted and unpainted steel sculptures selected from the artist?s long and prolific career, highlighting key themes of his oeuvre: engagement with form in space, dialogue between sculpture and architecture, and creation of new, abstract analogies for the human figure and landscape. Against the backdrop of the New York City skyline, this exhibition offers up a veritable feast for the eyes, with unparalleled views of both the city and the artist?s cutting-edge creations.

If you're in upstate New York, don't miss this event:

Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera
at George Eastman House - International Museum of Photography and Film
Jun 25, 2011 - Sept 18, 2011
As American as apple pie: The iconic illustrations of Norman Rockwell captured the essence of American culture in the mid 20th century. Now showcasing at the George Eastman house is a collection of works by the artist, with the photographs he orchestrated that inspired his memorable paintings and illustrations. The artist created over 4,000 works during his prolific career, many notably gracing the cover of the Saturday Evening Post for four decades.

From the 1930s onward, Rockwell used photography to realize his artistic concepts in the studio. He directed the photo sessions, painstakingly selecting models, props, and locations, and created a multitude of photographs for each new subject. Rockwell was as meticulous with his photographs as he was with his paintings; his illustrations appear as alternate representations of the photographs he used to create them. From a stockpile of over 20,000 negatives, this one-of-a-kind exhibit showcases these study photographs for the first time, offering visitors a glimpse at the scenes which inspired the artist?s uniquely American art.

For Everyone Who Enjoys Recreation On The Water, A Boating License ...

It is a safe bet that almost no one is in favor of taxes, regardless of what is being taxed. Still, responsible citizens realize there has to be a means for the government to generate revenue in order to provide services. For those who enjoy being out on the water, a boating license helps pay to keep the possibility available.

There are so many things we take for granted when it comes to outdoor recreation, especially when it comes to the conveniences. We expect our parks to be clean and well kept, safe and lighted so we can enjoy them with our families. We expect there to be some form of authority to ensure others enjoying the waterways do so in a manner that does not infringe on our experience. When others are misbehaving, we want someone to be there to reign them in.

Water sports are great fun and we engage in these activities often without realizing the preparation of the area. We expect that if there is any condition that would make our pleasure ride unsafe, someone will have identified it and either correct it or warn us in advance. Likewise, we want someone monitoring for the unusual presence of dangerous sharks or even stinging jelly fish.

We have also come to assume there will always be someone we can turn to for information and instruction on rules of the water and how to be safe while enjoying the rivers, bays and lakes. When we need to determine if the floatation devices we have are adequate, or need recommendations for them in advance, we need knowledgeable people to assist. And when we run into trouble, we expect there to be someone to come to our aid.

There are also the issues of facilities, boat ramps and even fueling locations without which our parks would not be boater friendly. The actual fuel and other consumables, of course, are paid for by the individuals using them. But the structures and the people working to keep them up are government employees, and the revenue stream for such activity is severely restricted.

Water safety programs are encompassing and require resources to execute. Everything from floatation devices to wildlife education courses are part of the experience we have come to believe will always be available. These programs play a major role in the prevention of injury and death on the water, and reduces costs by minimizing rescue and recovery operations.

The edges of each body of water not only affect the value of our leisurely pursuit, their erosion can have detrimental effects on property, roads and other forms of infrastructure. Projects to keep erosion at bay require complicated analysis and continuous monitoring. These projects require a deep understanding of the environmental impact of construction on the quality of the water and the impact to wildlife.

For those who not only want to ski, para sail or just cruise, the animals we capture for sport and to eat also require the attention of authorities. Over fishing can deplete a species over time, and we all want our children and grandchildren to have as much fun landing the big as we do. A boating license is much more than just a tax on those who own boats, it is an investment in the outdoors that impacts us all.

Getting a pleasure craft operator card and learning boating safety is now quick and easy, simply register for a boating course, then the online boating Exam and away you go.

Investigation continues into homicide at retirement home ...

KENT COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) ? Police in Kent County are continuing their investigation into the death of an 89-year-old West Michigan woman.

Mary Morrison was found dead Tuesday in her apartment at the Sentinel Pointe Retirement Community in Cascade Township. Her death has been ruled a homicide.

News of Morrison?s death is sparking outrage as people wonder who would do something like this to an 89-year-old woman with no enemies.

On Thursday family members told Newschannel 3 that it?s just not right what happened to Morrison. Morrison?s loved ones tell us that she did so much right in her life, living to the age of 89 and still in good health.

Morrison?s brother, Lyle Morrison, spoke well of the investigation into his sister?s death, saying; ?They?ve been working their butts off for us, interview after interview after interview, they?re doing and we appreciate it.?

Morrison?s family members and friends all declined to speak to us on-camera Thursday, but did tell us a bit about her.

The family released a statement in which they said, ?Mary was a kind and gentle soul and a devout Catholic with an infectious smile and laugh. She loved spending time with her family and is now in the arms of Our Lord Jesus Christ.?

Morrison?s niece, Christine Hock expressed her bewilderment at the case, saying, ?We just don?t know what happened to her. We are leaving it in the hands of the deputies to find the person responsible.?

What many are wondering is why someone would walk in to a retirement village and kill someone.

Deputies are not yet releasing much, if any, information about the case yet, but Newschannel 3 will continue to follow this investigation and bring you the latest as it comes in.

U.N. calls emergency meeting on east Africa famine (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? The United Nations has called an emergency meeting on July 25 to discuss mobilizing aid for drought-stricken east Africa, where famine has been declared in parts of Somalia.

A wide swathe of east Africa, including Kenya and Ethiopia, has been hit by years of severe drought and the United Nations says two regions of southern Somalia are suffering the worst famine for 20 years, with 3.7 million people facing starvation.

The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization announced an emergency meeting at its Rome headquarters on Monday to be attended by ministers and senior representatives from its 191 member countries, other U.N. bodies, NGOs and regional development banks.

The meeting was called at the request of France, current president of the Group of 20 leading economies.

British charity Oxfam accused several European governments Wednesday of willful neglect in reacting to the crisis, with an $800 million aid shortfall slowing the international response.

Years of anarchic conflict in southern Somalia have exacerbated the emergency, preventing aid agencies from helping communities in the area. Nearly 135,000 Somalis have fled since January, mainly to neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia, with many small children dying during the journey.

Islamist militants linked to al Qaeda, who control much of southern and central Somalia, imposed a ban on food aid in 2010, but lifted it earlier this month as the crisis worsened.

Argentina Jews reject Iran help in bombing probe (AFP)

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) ? Argentina's two main Jewish bodies rejected Friday an offer from Iran to help with a probe into a 1994 bombing that levelled a Jewish charity building in Buenos Aires, killing 85 people.

"Declarations from the Iranian government of their wish to cooperate with the Argentine government to help shed light on the terrorist attack... are not credible," the Mutual Israeli Argentina Association (AMIA) and the Delegation of Israeli Associations in Argentina (DAIA) wrote in a a joint statement.

Foreign Minister Hector Timerman said the Iranian proposal was "positive and unheard of," and that legal experts were studying it.

Monday marked the 17th anniversary of the attack that destroyed the seven-story AMIA building. Three hundred people were also injured in the blast.

Argentine officials allege the attack was carried out by members of the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah on Tehran's orders.

For years, Iran had refused to collaborate with Argentina but last Saturday, Iran's foreign ministry said in a statement that it was "ready for a constructive dialogue" with Buenos Aires on the case.

"The offer of dialogue has no other aim than to try to reduce pressure and international isolation" on Iran, AMIA and DAIA said.

The bodies, representing most of Argentina's 300,000 Jews, called on the government to continue the probe and uphold arrest warrants for eight Iranian ex-high-ranking officials.

An organization representing families and friends of the victims however signaled its support for government dialogue with Iran as long as it did not involve political or economic deals.

Iran declared this week that the "innocence" of its nationals accused in the bombing would be proven.

Crafts Your Kids Will Love | Chic Galleria

School is out for the summer. Your children are home full-time. What crafts can you and your children undertake . . . crafts that will entertain and possibly educate . . . and certainly forestall boredom for your children? You and your children can:

Make, decorate, and fly kites.

Decorate sunglasses with paint, glitter, and other items to express your children?s unique personalities.

Make and decorate a bug house.

Plant a garden and make garden ornaments such as pavers/stepping stones, handprint and footprint plaster castings, garden banners/flags

Make pet rocks.

Decorate your sidewalks with chalk art.

Make and decorate a wind sock.

Make and decorate a birdfeeder.

Make sand art. Make hollyhock dolls.

Sing songs. Children learn from lyrics. The alphabet song is a good example of learning through song. And since children love music and singing, they will thoroughly enjoy this educational experience.

Use finger paints to learn colors. You can also use finger paints to teach children how colors can be created by combining other colors (i.e., purple is created by combining blue and red). Since children love artistic expression (especially if they can get their hands messy in the process), they will thoroughly enjoy this educational experience as well.

Create crafts such as erupting volcanoes, breathing lungs, and aerodynamically successful paper airplanes.

Plant and tend a vegetable garden to learn soil science and nutrition.

Cook and bake to learn nutrition. Fun foods to prepare include homemade ice cream, decorated cupcakes and cookies, pizza with toppings from a variety of food groups, and homemade bread.

Take a nature hike in your community and learn about native plants and animals.

Take part in the reduce-reuse-recycle movement. Tour a landfill. Learn eco-science.

Volunteer for a local charity to learn social skills and develop work ethic. Volunteerism could be as easy as stuffing envelopes, distributing pamphlets, or attending charity-sponsored events. These and many other fun crafts await you and your children this summer.
