Couple of weekly portions of oily fish can help ward off stroke: But fish oil supplements don't have the same effect

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Eating at least two servings of oily fish a week is moderately but significantly associated with a reduced risk of stroke, finds a study published on the British Medical Journal website.

But taking fish oil supplements doesn't seem to have the same effect, say the researchers.

Regular consumption of fish and long chain omega 3 fatty acids has been linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease and current guidelines recommend eating at least two portions of fish a week, preferably oily fish like mackerel and sardines. But evidence supporting a similar benefit for stroke remains unclear.

So an international team of researchers, led by Dr. Rajiv Chowdhury at Cambridge University and Professor Oscar H. Franco at Erasmus MC Rotterdam, analysed the results of 38 studies to help clarify the association between fish consumption and risk of stroke or mini-stroke (transient ischaemic attack or TIA). Collectively, these conditions are known as cerebrovascular disease.

The 38 studies involved nearly 800,000 individuals in 15 countries and included patients with established cardiovascular disease (secondary prevention studies) as well as lower risk people without the disease (primary prevention studies). Differences in study quality were taken into account to identify and minimise bias.

Fish and long chain omega 3 fatty acid consumption was assessed using dietary questionnaires, identifying markers of omega 3 fats in the blood, and recording use of fish oil supplements. A total of 34,817 cerebrovascular events were recorded during the studies.

After adjusting for several risk factors, participants eating two to four servings a week had a moderate but significant 6% lower risk of cerebrovascular disease compared with those eating one or fewer servings of fish a week, while participants eating five or more servings a week had a 12% lower risk.

An increment of two servings per week of any fish was associated with a 4% reduced risk of cerebrovascular disease. In contrast, levels of omega 3 fats in the blood and fish oil supplements were not significantly associated with a reduced risk.

Several reasons could explain the beneficial impact of eating fish on vascular health, say the authors. For example, it may be due to interactions between a wide range of nutrients, like vitamins and essential amino acids, commonly found in fish. Alternatively, eating more fish may lead to a reduction in other foods, like red meat, that are detrimental to vascular health. Or higher fish intake may simply be an indicator of a generally healthier diet or higher socioeconomic status, both associated with better vascular health.

The differences seen between white and oily fish may be explained by the way they are typically cooked (white fish is generally battered and deep fried, adding potentially damaging fats).

Although there's a possibility that some other unmeasured (confounding) factor may explain their results, the authors conclude that "they reinforce a potentially modest beneficial role of fish intake in the cause of cerebrovascular disease."

In addition, they say their findings are in line with current dietary guidelines that encourage fish consumption for all; and intake of fish oils to people with pre-existing or at high risk of heart disease. They also support the view that future nutritional guidelines should be principally "food based."

In an accompanying editorial, authors from the Division of Human Nutrition at Wageningen University suggest that although it is "reasonable" to advise patients that eating one or two portions of fish per week could reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, any benefit of long chain omega 3 fatty acid supplementation is likely to be small. They say it is possible, however, that patients with additional risk factors such as diabetes may benefit.

Great Tips For Using Internet Promotion To ... - Make Money Blog

Great Tips For Using Internet Promotion To Benefit You

A strong web presence can be a very valuable strategy for any business, and effective Affiliate marketing will spread the word about your product or service. It may seem easy at first, but you have to become educated on the topic of web marketing in order to succeed at it. Here are some suggestions to follow, and before you know it, you will be an expert.

Consider adding a game to your website in order to draw more visitors. Customers love to play free games online, and that can keep people coming back for more after they play once. You can use your game to subtly market your products or services. If you sell some sort of hair product, you can include that in a game to get people thinking about your products.

You should ensure that your business website?s URL is a simple one. If you can arrange it, use your business name as a website name. Customers can use Google to find your site, of course, but make it even simpler with an easy to remember address they can type into the URL field.

Great content is the basis of a strong, effective Affiliate marketing strategy. Always make sure your content is updated and correct before sending it to customers. In addition, make sure that someone looks over your content. A fresh perspective is extremely valuable. Finally, always run a thorough grammar and spelling check before you publish your content to catch any typos or mistakes.

Make up goals for your website and do everything you can to stick with them. Figure out which kind of articles you want to write and for which article directory. Make sure this content is adapted to your audience, and encourage people to share these articles with their friends. In order to make the most of your efforts, keep the directory?s guidelines firmly in mind when you write.

A good web marketing tip is to be aware of your competition. Look at your competitors? sites to get a better idea of how they are marketing their products or services. Your goal is to create a better site that people will check instead of your competitors?.

A successful Internet angle to follow would be to make offers to your customers for added discounts if they happen to spend over a stated amount of money. An example of this would be to offer them 10 percent off orders of $200 or more. Incentives like this will ensure customer loyalty and keep them coming back.

If you make any sort of claim in your ads, you must also ensure that you can support it with hard evidence. Lots of people are skeptical of what they read. If you include testimonials, studies, guarantees or references, you will seem much more credible and are more likely to get a sale. Statements without evidence to back them up will not cause people to take your product seriously.

Do not use the same tactics or content as others if you wish to use Online marketing well. The search engines have gotten much better at identifying duplicate content, and even if you find that copying from others works for a little while, it can be devastating in the long run. Try to be innovative.

Add content in the form of a blog or forum to prevent your website from becoming boring or irrelevant. To rank high with search engines, you need fresh content. A blog is a very effective tool for adding fresh, relevant content.

Include a chat feature on your site so that visitors can meet each other there. This will make people feel like they are part of a group, not just a customer. People are naturally drawn to others with shared interests, which makes them highly likely to bond and connect with your business.

If your site sells products, having security is important. There are a lot of impartial, reputable services. McAffee, VeriSign, etc. will safeguard the financial exposure of both vendor and customer. Online security is very important and it?s not free. However, it can help you avoid a myriad of problems, so do your research and make sure your financial transactions are protected.

There has to be something on your site that visitors can?t find anywhere else. Advertise it heavily to attract customers to your site. They may stay to look at other products you offer.

These days, people are very leery of advertising. That?s due to years of ads being misleading. As a consequence, you must provide proof for what you state on your site. Use commentaries, reviews, testimonials, and research to back you up. This helps back up your reputation and can get people to trust you. You should always respect your customers? intelligence and common sense. Don?t take advantage of your potential or current customers. Your reputation in the years ahead will reflect how you treat your customers, and those that are well-treated will continue to return constantly.

Create a list of FAQs about your product. Take the time to develop questions that allow for answers full of product suggestions. Write your questions with this in mind, giving yourself the subtle opportunity to promote your wares.

The way your site looks is just as big a deal as it would be if your customers were in your physical store. Always perform regular site maintenance to make sure the site is up and running smoothly. Consider the fact that your customers can?t enter your store if the doors are locked; if your site has bugs that prevent customers from shopping, they won?t stick around too long.

Include a choice of several specials on the order check-out page. Perhaps you would offer a choice of one half-priced product, from a selection of three or four, to say thank you for the business. This is an excellent method of getting rid of surplus inventory and stimulating sales. At the same time, the customer feels as if he or she is getting a deal.

Website marketing will bring your products to the public eye. The only way to have Website marketing success is by knowing exactly how to go about it. This article is designed to provide you with the information you need for success in your Web marketing ventures.

Tina Fey slams 'legitimate rape' remarks

Tina Fey speaks at the Center for Reproductive Rights Inaugural Gala at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York on Wednesday.

By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Tina Fey has a bone to pick with politician Todd Akin over his comments on "legitimate rape."

Speaking at the Center for Reproductive Rights' Inaugural Gala in New York Wednesday night, the "30 Rock" star called out the Missouri Republican Senate candidate over his assertion in an August TV interview?that rape victims have a slim chance of getting pregnant because the body "has ways to try to shut the whole thing down."

"Todd Akin claims that women can't really get pregnant from a legitimate rape because the body secretes hormones," Fey told the crowd. "Now I can't even finish this sentence without getting dumber; it's making me dumber when I say it--but it's something about the body not being able to get pregnant when it's under physical stress. Mr. Akin, I think you are confusing the phrase 'legitimate rape' with the phrase 'competitive gymnastics.'"

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting 2013 Golden Globes

The funnylady's wisecrack isn't surprising, given that she's never shied away from addressing such hot-button topics dating back to her days anchoring Weekend Update on "Saturday Day Night Live." But as a woman, Fey clearly took offense to Akin's controversial view, which has been tacitly accepted by many ultraconservative anti-abortion activists.

"If I have to listen to one more gray-faced man with a two-dollar haircut explain to me what rape is, I'm gonna lose my mind," Fey added. "I watch these guys and I'm, like, 'What is happening? Am I a secretary on 'Mad Men'? What's happening?'"

We wonder what the comic actress's alter ego, Sarah Palin, has to say about it.

Tina Fey brings the funny at Comedy Central's Night of Too Many Stars benefit

The Center for Reproductive Rights is a global legal advocacy group dedicated to advancing and defending reproductive rights, and Fey was tapped to open up last night's program, which honored extraordinary leaders who have blazed new trails for women.

Other celebs in attendance included Stanley Tucci, Jane Seymour, Tate Donovan and Janeane Garofalo.

Is Amazon censoring book reviews? | Digital Trends

Is Amazon policing its user reviews a little too strictly? One author believes so, after several fans provide evidence of unusual experiences with the online seller.

Amazon has had a troubled relationship with its customers in the past, whether it?s over the safety and welfare of its employees working in warehouses, cookies and tracking information being recorded without customer consent or simply its choice of what items to stock and which to avoid, but if there?s one thing that has always seemed to be entirely free of #amazonfail hashtaggery, it?s been the company?s hands-free approach to their product reviews.

Well, that might not be the case anymore.

Author Michelle Gagnon shared an unusual story via the Kill Zone blog about some fans? trouble getting a review onto Amazon?s listing for Gagnon?s latest book. ?Apparently these fans tried to submit reviews of my book on Amazon, and their reviews either a) never appeared, or b) were abruptly taken down,? she wrote in response to the fans contacting her to alert her to what had happened. ?Two of the fans send transcripts of the reviews, and they were standard (and positive, thankfully): nothing offensive at all in terms of content,? Gagnon wrote, continuing,

One of the fans took the time and trouble to write to Amazon, asking why his review was removed. He received this form letter reply: ?I?m sorry for any previous concerns regarding your reviews on our site. We do not allow reviews on behalf of a person or company with a financial interest in the product or a directly competing product. This includes authors, artists, publishers, manufacturers, or third-party merchants selling the product.

?We have removed your reviews as they are in violation of our guidelines. We will not be able to go into further detail about our research.

?I understand that you are upset, and I regret that we have not been able to address your concerns to your satisfaction. However, we will not be able to offer any additional insight or action on this matter.? Now, I?ve known this fan for years?he?s read (and reviewed!) all of my other books. And he has no financial stake in my work. He also doesn?t sell anything on Amazon, ever?never mind competing products (which would be what, exactly? Other books? Does this mean that I?m no longer allowed to review thrillers by my contemporaries?)

Further, Gagnon went on, when the fan responded to Amazon to explain that he was had no financial interest in the product, he was told that should they receive another letter from him on the subject, they would remove Gagnon?s book from the site altogether. ?Needless to say, I found this very disturbing, particularly since it doesn?t appear to be an isolated case,? she wrote. ?After all, two other fans sent similar messages; and I can only wonder how many others had the same experience, but didn?t write to let me know.?

The story seems unexpected, but it?s the second PR black eye for Amazon this week, following the news that the company wiped the Kindle purchases of one customer without warning (Only to later reverse this decision in the face of public outcry). Perhaps the company may need to take another look at its relationship with customers ? and with publicity ? before it heads into the all-important holiday period?

Algeria accepts possible Mali intervention

Adama Diarra / Reuters file

Militiaman from the Ansar Dine Islamic group, who said they come from Niger and Mauritania in northeastern Mali in June.

By Reuters

Algeria, a key power in north Africa, has given tacit approval for African-led military intervention to stop Islamic militants in neighboring Mali, sources in Algeria and France said.

The former French colony shares a 1,200-mile border with Mali, and is wary of any outside interference and conflict spilling over its borders.

It fears military action in Mali could push al-Qaida militants back into southern Algeria as well as triggering a refugee and political crisis, especially among displaced Malian Tuaregs heading north to join tribes in Algeria.

Although Algiers would not be able to veto an operation, it would be diplomatically risky for African countries backed by Western powers to intervene in Mali without Algeria's consent, especially as the conflict could drag on for many months.

However, after weeks of diplomatic cajoling led by France, Algiers has now reluctantly agreed that foreign troops will be needed to eradicate the Islamist threat.

Algeria is Africa's biggest country and a top oil and gas exporter and has the largest military in Africa, and second-largest in the Middle East after Egypt.

It continues to rule out any direct support to the mission.

'The new Afghanistan'? West turns its attention to Mali

"At the end of the day, we won't oppose a military intervention in Mali as long as foreign troops are not stationed on our soil,'' said an Algerian source informed about discussions on Mali.

With six hostages held by the Islamists and fearful of an attack on home soil, France is eager for swift action.

"Algeria now accepts the principle of a military intervention, which wasn't the case before," a senior French diplomat said.

He said the change in position came after a high-level meeting in the Malian capital Bamako on Oct. 19 that brought regional and international players to the negotiating table.

A French defense ministry source said there was "tacit'' agreement and that Paris did not expect more from Algiers.

Algeria has repeatedly advocated a diplomatic solution in Mali since Tuareg rebels and Islamists captured two thirds of the country after an army coup in Bamako in March. The Islamist militants, some linked to al-Qaida, later hijacked the revolt.

The Bamako meeting followed a French-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution urging Mali to engage in dialogue with Tuareg Islamist rebels Ansar Dine if they cut links with radical groups, a move that satisfied Algiers' calls for dialogue.

Paris had until now considered Ansar Dine among the al Qaida-linked groups and refused to negotiate with them.

The resolution also asked African states and the United Nations for a Mali military intervention plan within 45 days.

A second Algerian official said Algiers would do its best to find a diplomatic solution, but could also potentially support Malian troops by providing weapons for a future operation.

Terrorist dens
When a coup in March removed President Amadou Toumani Toure, it revealed a deep rot in a country once seen as a model of democracy for the region. Bamako had tried to run Mali's north through alliances with a local elite involved in criminality ? rather than by tackling long-standing issues ? and that accelerated the collapse as a power vacuum persisted.

Al-Qaida's north African wing, led by two Algerians, Mokhtar Belmokhtar and Abou Zeid, has extended its influence partly through loose alliances. Its partners include Ansar Dine, a group of Tuareg-led rebels seeking to impose sharia, and the Arab-dominated MUJWA, say both local and Western officials.

Money from criminal enterprises has enabled the Islamists to outgun rival rebel groups. "(The Islamists) can afford to pay people but we cannot," said Mohamed Attaher, a senior official with MNLA, a rebel group that kicked off an uprising in January but in June was pushed out of areas it controlled by MUJWA.

The United Nations has evidence that Islamists enlisting children in Mali's north are paying their families a one-off fee of about $600 for each new young fighter, plus monthly payments of about $400, according to Ivan Simonovic, the U.N.'s Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights.

In Washington, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta voiced concern about the presence of AQIM in Mali, but stressed the need to work with countries in the region to address it.

"We need to work with the nations in the region. They all agree that we're facing the same threat there from AQIM," Panetta said, adding any future operations would have to be developed and executed "on a regional basis."

"And so our goal right now is to try to do everything we can to bring those countries together in a common effort to go after AQIM."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to talk with Algerian?officials about Mali when she?visits the country early next week.

Diplomats say any intervention in northern Mali is still some months away with a three-phased plan likely to consolidate the south first, followed by an operation to re-take northern cities and finally a mission to go after militants.

In anticipation, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal told lawmakers extra troops had been sent to secure Algeria's borders.

"We won't allow any threat to harm our nation," he said. "Algeria wants to avoid having terrorist dens at its frontiers."

The change in Algeria's position comes amid an improvement in ties with France 50 years after it gained its independence.

In a symbolic gesture before a state visit to Algeria in December, President Francois Hollande acknowledged for the first time last week that Algerians were massacred at a 1961 pro-independence rally in Paris. Historians say more than 200 may have been killed in the police action.

Riccardo Fabiani, North Africa analyst at Eurasia Group, said there was still a clear red line for Algeria which was that it would not intervene or commit troops.

"They are adopting a sort of benevolent neutrality. The Algerians are going to stand by and watch. I can't see collaboration at any level other than intelligence sharing."

?Spaced Out: 43% of Gen X Can't Identify Home Galaxy

Identifying your home or street from a Google Earth image may be tough enough, but what about your cosmic address? Turns out, fewer than 50 percent of adults ages 37 to 40 know that humans live in the spiral Milky Way galaxy.

That's according to a new report of more than 4,000 American adults who make up the core of Generation X.

"Knowing your cosmic address is not a necessary job skill, but it is an important part of human knowledge about our universe and ? to some extent ? about ourselves," report author Jon D. Miller said in a statement.

Miller is the director of the Longitudinal Study of American Youth at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research. Beginning in 1986, with funding from the National Science Foundation, scientists have collected data about the lives and knowledge of Generation X.

In the latest installment of the study, Miller showed participants a Hubble Space Telescope image of a spiral galaxy and asked them to identify the picture. The participants were asked to identify the image first in an open-ended question and then in a multiple-choice setup. [Infographic: Our Milky Way Galaxy]

Just 43 percent of participants gave an answer saying the image represented a galaxy like our own. And men had a leg up, with 53 percent of males and 32 percent of females nailing their cosmic location to some degree. Those with less than a high-school education fared the worst, with just 21 percent knowing our cosmic address, compared with 63 percent of those with doctorates or professional degrees who said the same.

"One of the factors that contributes to this educational difference is exposure to college-level science courses," Miller said. "The United States is unique in its requirement that all college students complete one year of college science courses as part of a general education requirement."

Though four out of five participants indicated they had seen this type of space-telescope image before, often online, 60 percent said this was the first time they took a careful look at such an image.

Those who correctly identified the sparkly swirl as a spiral galaxy like the one we live in were more likely than the "cosmically lost" participants to agree with the statements:

--"When I see images like this, I am reminded of the vastness of the universe" (70 percent versus 53 percent);

--"Images like this show how small and fragile planet Earth is in the context of the universe" (58 percent versus 44 percent);

--"Seeing images like this make me want to learn more about the nature of the universe" (27 percent versus 19 percent);

--"It is very likely that there is intelligent life at many places in the universe" (39 percent versus 26 percent).

However, those in the know about the Milky Way were slightly less likely than the other participants to agree that "the size and complexity of the universe proves the greatness of God's creation" (45 percent versus 51 percent, respectively).

"Unlike our distant ancestors who thought the Earth was the center of the universe, we know that we live on a small planet in a heliosphere surrounding a moderate-sized star that is part of a spiral galaxy," Miller said. "There may be important advantages in the short-term ? the next million years or so ? to knowing where we are and something about our cosmic neighborhood."

With the rise of the Internet, Miller noted, such images and cosmic information are more accessible than ever. Even so, he said, "some of the science information on the Internet is incorrect or misleading." When asked, participants indicated the most trusted Internet resources for universe-related information included a NASA website, a program or exhibit at a planetarium or museum, a PBS Nova science show, a Discovery Channel science show and a lecture by an astronomy professor. The least trusted sources: a lecture by a leader of a church or religious group.

Is Ask.com Continuing To Play The Google Arbitrage Game?

We recently received an email from a reader who?d made an inquiry with Google AdWords support. Why, this reader had asked, is Ask.com allowed to buy AdWords and rank for certain surprising terms, when its landing page features mostly ads above the fold? Doesn?t that violate Google?s policies on arbitrage?

All About Arbitrage

Arbitrage, when it comes to Google AdWords, is when a advertiser hopes it can buy traffic from Google for less than it makes off ads on its own site.

In other words, say a company buys an ad for $0.60 per click on Google. Visitors click on that ad, come to the advertiser?s site where they click on a ad there ? maybe even an ad that?s part of the Google ad network ? and generate $1 per click. The advertiser has earned a tidy $0.40 in profit.

Google doesn?t like arbitrage because it?s annoying for its searchers. As Google?s policy against arbitrage says:

One example of this kind of prohibited behavior is called?arbitrage, where advertisers drive traffic to their websites at low cost and pay for that traffic by earning money from the ads placed on those websites. We?ve created this policy to help ensure that users see useful, unique, and original content without excessive advertising.

It makes sense. Who wants to click on ad at Google, then show up on a page that seems designed just to show a bunch of other ads? But that?s the situation that does happen with some ads that Ask.com runs on Google.

It?s something we?ve seen before on Ask, as we covered in our?Ask.com Plays The Google AdWords Arbitrage Game?in 2008. Back then, Ask said it was an ?isolated incident? down to its search marketing agency. But nearly four years later, it can feel like arbitrage has returned.

Ask?s Ads

Consider these Google results for a search on??What is gluten??

The results are topped by an ad from Ask, promising??Get Answers Now on Ask.com,? like this:

But when the user clicks through, they find ads taking up the majority of the space above the fold, like?this:

In the example above, the first listing (marked as ?Answers?) isn?t easily clicked on. The ?What is Gluten? title isn?t a link, as with regular search listings. The only way to get to that answer is if you use the ?More? link at the end of the page description:

Under this comes a big block of ads, the first listings that are more easily clicked upon. Sometimes, these ads even come before the answers:

?

Similar situations happen for a range of searches, such as??What is Celiac disease?? and??What is Aspergers syndrome??

From Google Ad To Google Ad

The ads themselves all come from Google. Ask is part of Google?s ad network. That means Ask has purchased ads on Google for ?what is gluten,? then shows a page with ads for ?what is gluten.? How?s Ask making money off of that?

One answer is that Ask is likely buying the ads more cheaply on Google than other advertisers, perhaps because it has a long account history that helps its overall quality score. Another issue is that it might be carrying ads that aren?t targeting the word gluten expressly ? and so which might be more expensive that those going after that term specifically.

Consider the ads for both McDonald?s and Cheerios that appear. Neither leads to landing pages that have anything to do with gluten:

AdWords Rep: It?s Not Arbitrage, Because Ask.com Is A Google Product

Our reader asked a Google AdWords support rep about the situation and got a surprising response that this was allowed because Ask.com is a ?Google product? and because as a search engine, it?s fine for Ask to drive people to a search results page that includes both ad and regular unpaid ?organic? listings:

After consulting with a policy specialist, I?ve found that Ask.com is not in violation of any policies. Since Ask.com is considered a Google product, they are able to serve ads at the top of the page when the search query is found to be relevant to their ads. For example, if you search for ?adwords? in a Google search, an ad for www.google.com/AdWords will always appear at the top of the results.

As far as the landing page being in violation of arbitrage policy, this is not the case due to Ask.com being a search engine. Like Google.com, Ask.com has relevant ads to the search terms displayed at the top of the page, and organic search results displayed below. I understand how you could interpret this in a sense of arbitrage, but it is not the case.

Google PR: No Special Treatment For Ask

When we contacted Google?s PR department, it said the email was a mistake. Ask isn?t considered a Google product, even though Ask has a deal?to syndicate Google AdWords and ?other search-related services.?

Google said Ask gets no special treatment (nor does any other search partner). Beyond that, the company wouldn?t comment on specific Ask.com AdWords creatives. Since we brought up a number of the examples last week, and they are still appearing as of this writing, that suggests that Google doesn?t view them as violating its arbitrage policy.

Ask.com: We?re Providing A Service

Ask.com also said it was getting no special treatment and that its ads were leading to useful ad-supported information.

?We?re clearly a service that uses advertising to monetize our site, but the only way that we make advertising work is when people come back to their site,? Doug Leeds, CEO of Ask.com told me.

Leeds wouldn?t get into the details of whether Ask.com is ? deliberately or not ? benefiting from an arbitrage-like situation. He did say the company?s goal is to get visitors to stay and come back, rather than click on an ad and leave.

?Our business model depends on people who come to us from Google coming back again, or else it doesn?t work,? he said.

Cops: Dead man wearing armor found at shooting scene

By NBC News and wire reports

INGLEWOOD, Calif. --?A man found dead at the property where five members of a Southern California family were shot -- two fatally -- was believed to be the attacker because he was wearing body armor and clutching a handgun, police said.

The loaded handgun was a .38 caliber revolver registered to 55-year-old Desmond John Moses. Inglewood police say Moses set his backyard bungalow ablaze before spraying bullets at his neighbors.

Investigators suspect Moses blamed the young family who lived in the front house for an eviction notice he had received from their landlord.

The dead man had "what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head," wore body armor and carried additional ammunition in his pockets when it was found late Saturday, a police statement said.

While police could not conclude that the body is that of Moses until an autopsy is concluded, "the evidence suggests this is the case," the statement added.

The shooting rampage before dawn Saturday killed 33-year-old Filimon Lamas and his 4-year-old son. The father was shielding three of his children when he was shot, Police Chief Mark Fronterotta said. Lamas' 28-year-old wife, Gloria Jimenez, was shot in both legs but managed to carry the wounded 4-year-old out of the house.

Paramedics found her collapsed on the street. The child, who was shot in the head, died at a hospital.

Father dies shielding children from gunman who set home ablaze

Investigators believe Moses entered the family's home around 4 a.m. wearing a dark cap and a white painter's mask, according to NBCLosAngeles.com.

Authorities said he fired 10 times, also wounding a 7-year-old girl in the chest and a 6-year-old boy in the pelvis. An 8-year-old boy escaped injury.

The mother and daughter remained hospitalized in stable condition, Lt. James Madia said. The 6-year-old boy was released.

Authorities launched a manhunt and evacuated surrounding homes after the shooting rampage, but it was not until hours later that they found the charred body because it was hidden under layers of debris.

"He was kind of a hoarder or pack rat," Madia said.

Fighting eviction notice
The landlord told the Los Angeles Times?that Moses had been fighting an eviction notice and recently lost his case in court.

The newspaper reported Sunday that Moses has held a security guard registration with the California Department of Consumer Affairs since 1984. However, police said they did not know whether he was working as a security guard.

Moses lived in the bungalow for 17 years, while the family lived in the front house for 8 years, Madia said. The front house is next door to the home in which Jimenez grew up and where her father still lives. Several of her siblings live on the same block, the Times reported.

Jimenez had been concerned that Moses was "not all there," her brother Jaime told the Times. He said that Moses would only grunt when the family greeted him and complained when the children played in the yard between their houses.

High school sweethearts
Relatives told the Times that Lamas and Jimenez were high school sweethearts who recently got approval for a home loan, and were looking to buy a bigger house for their tight-knit family.

Lamas was part owner of a local diner, neighbors and friends told the newspaper.

"All he breathed was his family," Jiminez's brother?Jaime told the Times.

"All he did, all he talked about, was his family," he told the paper.

Dogs Health | Paw Prints: Pet Wellness Month | Puppy Dog

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

* Consistent, high-quality veterinary care is the foundation for your dog?s overall health. . Responsible pet caregivers have spayed or neutered their dog. If your dog is intact, you are missing out on major health benefits, including a much lower incidence of uterine infections and breast cancer in females, and lower risks of testicular cancer among males. . Ideally, wellness exams should be performed twice a year, and dogs with special needs, chronic health conditions, or other illness should be seen even more frequently. Since dogs age at a faster rate than humans, many subtle changes can develop, and routine visits allow your vet to closely monitor changes before minor health problems spin out of control. Your vet will recommend what immunizations that your dog needs, and can also suggest any supplements that might provide additional nutrition to your dog. Developing a good connection with your vet will lead to long-term benefit for you and your dog.

* Wellness starts with what you put into your body, so take a close look at what you?re putting in your dog?s body. There are almost as many different dog foods as there are people cereals, and most of the highly marketed dog foods are NOT healthy. The FDA does not regulate the pet food industry which results in most commercial pet foods being made from less than high quality ingredients. Dogs have the genetic potential to live 20 years or more but we are robbing those years from their lives with inferior pet foods. Don?t naively believe the slick marketing claims of the food manufacturers. Realize that green nuggets are NOT green vegetables: they are nuggets that are dyed green. Same with other colored kibble. Examine your dog?s food label , remembering that the primary sources are listed first.

Good kibble should not contain generic fats such as ?animal fat?

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? The brain's key "breeder" cells, it turns out, do more than that. They secrete substances that boost the numbers and strength of critical brain-based immune cells believed to play a vital role in brain health. This finding adds a new dimension to our understanding of how resident stem cells and stem cell transplants may improve brain function.

Many researchers believe that these cells may be able to regenerate damaged brain tissue by integrating into circuits that have been eroded by neurodegenerative disease or destroyed by injury. But new findings by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine suggest that another process, which has not been fully appreciated, could be a part of the equation as well. The findings appear in a study that will be published online Oct. 21 in Nature Neuroscience.

"Transplanting neural stem cells into experimental animals' brains shows signs of being able to speed recovery from stroke and possibly neurodegenerative disease as well," said Tony Wyss-Coray, PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences in the medical school and senior research scientist at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. "Why this technique works is far from clear, though, because actually neural stem cells don't engraft well."

Neural stem cells can endure essentially unchanged for decades in two places in the mammalian brain, replicating just enough to meet the routine needs of those regions. In most parts of the brain, they aren't found at all.

While of critical importance to maintaining healthy brain function, true neural stem cells are rare. Far more common are their immediate progeny, which are called neural progenitor cells, or NPCs. These robust, rapidly dividing cells are poised to travel down a committed path of differentiation to yield new brain cells of several different types including neurons.

It's known that treating humans with radiation or drugs that prevent NPC replication causes memory deficits ("chemo brain") and, in children, IQ losses of up to 20 points. Conversely, studies are being initiated to see whether infusing neural stem cells into brains affected by Alzheimer's disease can enhance patients' memory function.

One category of brain cells, microglia, descends not from neural stem cells but from an immune lineage and retains several features of immune cells. "Microglia are the brain's own resident immune cells," Wyss-Coray said. Unlike most other mature brain cells, microglia can proliferate throughout adulthood, especially in response to brain injury. They can, moreover, migrate toward injury sites, secrete various "chemical signaling" substances, and gobble up bits of debris, microbial invaders or entire dead or dying neurons.

Microglia normally are distributed throughout the brain -- rather small, quiescent cells sprouting long, skinny projections that meekly but efficiently survey large areas that, taken together, cover the entire brain. But if this surveillance reveals signs of a disturbance, such as injury or infection, the microglia whirl into action. They begin proliferating and their puny bodies puff up, metamorphosing from mild-mannered Clark Kent-like reporters to buffed Supermen who fly to the scene of trouble, where they secrete substances that can throttle bad actors or call in reinforcements. Within these activated cells, internal garbage disposals called lysosomes form in large numbers and start whirring, ready to make mincemeat out of pathogens or cellular debris.

In addition to their part patrol-officer, part cleanup-crew status, microglia can also secrete substances that help neurons thrive. They also contribute to the ongoing pruning of unneeded connections between neurons that occurs throughout our lives.

But like immune cells elsewhere, said Wyss-Coray, microglia can be a force for evil if they engage in too much or inappropriate activity. They might, for instance, start to remove healthy cells (as occurs in Parkinson's) or stop cleaning up garbage strewn about the brain (for example, Alzheimer's plaque).

In a series of experiments, Wyss-Coray and his colleagues have shown that NPCs secrete substances that activate microglia. First, the researchers observed that microglia were uncharacteristically abundant and activated in the two regions in the mammalian brain where NPCs reside and new neurons are formed. Wondering whether the NPCs might be causing this increased microglial activity, the investigators incubated mouse microglia in a culture medium in which NPCs had previously been steeped. Two days later, they saw that the microglia had multiplied more, expressed different amounts of various signal molecules and featured more lysosomes. "The microglia were ready for action," said Wyss-Coray.

So they injected NPCs into an area of mice's brains where these cells are normally not found. In the same area in the opposing brain hemisphere, they injected a control solution. Again they found significant differences in microglial proliferation and activity, and more microglia in the NPC-injected side had assumed a "Superman" as opposed to a "Clark Kent" body shape. When they repeated this experiment using only the NPCs' "discarded bath water" rather than NPCs themselves, they got similar results.

Clearly NPCs were secreting something, or some things, that were spurring microglia to action.

Using sophisticated lab techniques, the team monitored purified NPCs plus several other cell types found in the brain and assessed nearly 60 different substances known to have powerful cell-to-cell signaling properties. Several such substances, it turned out, were secreted in much larger amounts by NPCs than by the other cell types: most notably, vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF -- a well-known molecule produced by many cell types throughout the body. VEGF stimulates the formation of blood vessels and exerts a beneficial effect on neurons. Conversely, drugs that block VEGF (such as Avastin) are frequently used to combat cancer because tumors require an immense blood supply in order to grow quickly.

VEGF is also known to boost microglial proliferation. Because it is produced in such volumes by NPCs, Wyss-Coray's team wanted to see if VEGF alone could mimic any of the changes wrought by NPCs or their culture-medium-borne detritus. So they injected VEGF into mice's right brain hemisphere, and saline solution into the left -- again with the same outcomes. Taking the opposite tack, the team injected NPC-saturated medium devoid of the cells, as they had done earlier. But this time they first used various laboratory techniques to deplete the fluid of the VEGF secreted by its former inhabitants. Doing this almost completely reversed its microglia-activating effects.

"All of this strongly suggests that VEGF produced by NPCs is playing a strong role in influencing microglial behavior," said Wyss-Coray. "This is important, because in all neurodegenerative diseases we know of we see microglia out of control." The new finding may open the door to reprogramming misbehaving microglia to play better with other cells.

What Athletes Need To Know About Massage Therapy

A lot of athletes have to train every day. There are even those who have to face injuries and handle aches and pains brought about by these injuries. They can get aggressive treatment and management options for this. But, there is another method that athletes who are suffering from minor aches and pains can try. This method that they can try is massage.

Before an athlete joins a sporting event, he or she can get a massage in order to prepare the body for the strain that the physical activity would bring. The massage's effects can be gradual. This will help the body and its muscles feel more awake and ready to be exposed to difficult situations. This can be a way to prevent injuries.

This massage type can focus on the areas of the body that is expected to be used the most. Other body parts which will not be majorly used might still be massaged in order to prepare them for any eventuality. This can be done in as fast as 10 minutes and its effects can be experienced for a couple of hours.

After the event, the muscles of the body will still need to be conditioned. This time, the massage will be focused on helping the body recover from fatigue and injuries that it might have gotten. This can be done quickly after the event. If this is not possible, getting a massage within two hours after a game can still be beneficial. This can be a more effective form of cooling down exercise. This massage type can last for about 20 minutes to more than an hour.

You may also want to improve your performance. Aside from practice that you will be regularly doing, you might also receive massage therapies. It can be focused on making the body feel at ease with a little strain here and there. In the long run, you are trying to develop your body to make it less prone to injuries. For example, even for long and strenuous games, your feet or your arms will not be affected as much as when you have not gotten them conditioned early on.

Some minor injuries might also be massaged in order to prevent them from becoming more serious. Learning the right techniques or visiting a good massage therapist can allow you to get the most benefit.

After you have been injured, you may also use some techniques to recover as fast as possible. Massage is also famous for the recovery of muscles. The pain that you are feeling might be reduced. You may be able to resume movement of an injured body part at an early time.

Remember that there may be conditions wherein movement should be restricted as this can aggravate the condition. Getting a massage can be included in these restrictions. Make sure that you get clearance from your doctor beforehand. And of course, choose to visit licensed therapists or those working in reputable clinics. You can be assured of your safety and benefits if you are going to get your massage from them.

Google delivers 3Q letdown early, stock plummets

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? As far as unpleasant surprises go, Google hit Wall Street with a double whammy Thursday.

The Internet search leader that prides itself on organizing the world's information lost control of its own data when a contractor released its third-quarter earnings report more than three hours before the numbers were supposed to come out.

As if that wasn't jarring enough, the results alarmed investors because the company's earnings and revenue fell well below analyst projections. The disappointment triggered an 8 percent drop in Google's stock price that erased about $20 billion in shareholder wealth.

The stock lost $60.49 to close at $695.

"This is a monumental failure of epic proportions," said Michael Robinson, an executive vice president for the Levick Strategic Communications, which specializes in financial crisis management. "This was bad news compounded by bad process. It came out in the worst way possible."

Google Inc. blamed printer R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. for filing the company's quarterly statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission more than three hours ahead of schedule.

"We are fully engaged in an investigation to determine how this event took place and are pursuing our first obligation, which is to serve our valued customer," R.R. Donnelley said in a statement.

The embarrassing mix-up prompted Google CEO Larry Page to preface his review of the quarter with an apology during a conference call with analysts.

"I am sorry for the scramble earlier today," Page said, still sounding hoarse from a mysterious throat ailment. The problem left Page unable to speak during the summer, causing him to skip Google's second-quarter earnings call three months ago.

Page went on to paint a bright picture, not only of the most recent quarter, but for the next few years. "Every day, I wake up and I am delighted about our opportunities to keep growing," he said.

The pep talk didn't immediately resonate with investors.

Google's stock initially plunged more than 9 percent after the early release of the results. Trading was then suspended to allow more time for the information to be digested. After a nearly three-hour break, investors decided the results weren't quite as bad as they initially appeared, and the shares recovered slightly.

The sell-off reflects a reversal of the optimistic sentiment that had propelled Google's stock to an all-time high earlier this month. The stock had surged 27 percent in the three months before Thursday's unsettling developments.

Google earned $2.18 billion, or $6.53 per share, during the three months ending in September. That compared with net income of $2.73 billion, or $8.33 per share, last year.

The earnings would have been $9.03 per share, if not for Google's accounting costs for employee stock compensation and the Motorola charges. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting $10.63 per share, on average.

Revenue climbed 45 percent from last year to $14.1 billion. Excluding compensation for websites that generate traffic for Google's ads, revenue was $11.33 billion. Analysts were expecting $11.86 billion

Most of the trouble appeared to be concentrated in Motorola Mobility, a troubled cellphone maker that Google bought for $12.4 billion in May. Analysts have been fretting that Motorola Mobility would turn into a financial albatross, and some of those fears appeared to be realized in the latest quarter spanning from July through September.

The device maker suffered an operating loss of $527 million, more than tripling from the same time last year when it was still an independent company.

Google is trying to improve Motorola Mobility's performance by laying off about 20 percent of its workforce ? about 4,000 employees ? and closing one-third of its 90 plants and office. Those cost-cutting measures resulted in $349 million in charges during the quarter. But it still could take a few years for Google to turn around Motorola Mobility, Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette said on the conference call.

The stronger dollar also hurt Google, just as it has many other U.S. companies that do a lot of business in other countries. That's because overseas sales are now translating into fewer dollars than a year ago, resulting in less revenue. Excluding Motorola Mobility, Google said its revenue for the latest quarter would have been $557 million, or 5 percent higher, if currencies had remained at the same levels as a year ago.

But there were also some worrisome signs in Google's main business of selling online advertising.

Google's ad revenue rose 16 percent from the same time last year, the slowest pace in three years. The company's ad revenue had climbed by at least 21 percent in each of the previous 10 quarters.

Advertising accounts for 77 percent of Google's revenue. The rest comes from Motorola Mobility and other products, such as Google's recently released Nexus 7 tablet computer.

As has been the case for the past year, the average prices companies pay Google for ads appearing alongside search results also fell. The year-over-year decline for advertiser's "cost-per-click" on Google's ads declined 15 percent from the same time last year.

The decelerating growth in ad revenue is likely being driven by the growing use of smartphones and tablet computers to access the Internet.

The ads are more difficult to see on smartphones, in particular, so marketers aren't willing to pay as much for those commercial messages as they do for ads that are seen by people on personal computers. And people relying on mobile devices tend to use specially designed applications that so far haven't been set up to show as many ads as can be seen in Web browsers. People using mobile apps also have less reason to conduct searches on Google, depriving the company of opportunities to show ads.

"I am not at all worried about this because I think we are better positioned than most companies," Page assured analysts.

Google is reaping more revenue from the rapidly growing mobile market, largely because of its Android software than now powers more than 500 million smartphones and tablet computers. The company gives away Android to device makers, but the software is fruitful for Google because it's designed to drive up more traffic to its search engine and other services that show ads.

Page said the mobile market is now generating about $8 billion in annual revenue, including sales of applications, video, books and music in its Play store. Not all of those, sales, though, are recorded in Google's books because most of the money goes to developers, studios and publishers. A year ago, Google said the mobile market was generating about $2.5 billion in annual revenue, but that figure consisted entirely of ads, so it's not an apples-to-apples comparison to the $8 billion.
