Arts-Funding Site Gets 'Kickstart' From Business Bids

David Jackson (left) and Dave Petrillo of Coffee Joulies brought in more than $300,000 using Kickstarter.

The website Kickstarter has been around for two years now, helping artists, musicians and filmmakers fund their projects by getting lots of people to make small donations. Projecta that in the past had little hope of getting funding, suddenly have the cash they need. Recently, entrepreneurs have started using the site to launch new products, something the company's founders never imagined.

The Kickstarter formula is pretty simple and powerful. It starts with an idea, a specific project. Take X-Files: The Musical.

The Colonel Mustard Amateur Attic Theatre Company in Lincoln, Neb., is planning to transform X-Files the TV show into X-Files the musical. They're up on Kickstarter right now and like most projects on the site, their pitch for funding comes in the form of a video.

There's a goal. For X-Files it was $1,500. There's a deadline, usually 30 to 60 days out. Then friends, family and often total strangers back the project with a few bucks, sometimes even thousands. If a project meets its goal, it gets funded. Otherwise the backers aren't charged. It's an all or nothing situation.

And it works.

"Over 600,000 people have pledged to a project on Kickstarter, to the tune of over $50 million in our first two years," says Yancey Strickler, 32, one of Kickstarter's founders. "Right now it's over $2 million a week that's being pledged to projects."

The company takes a five-percent cut from each successfully funded project. But unlike grants or loans or record deals, when these projects get funded there are no strings attached.

"We don't turn down someone because their art is bad," says Strickler from the company's small Lower East Side headquarters. "We've never told someone to rewrite the third act or to ditch the singer or to lose 10 pounds."

Their main requirement is that project creators reward their backers in a fair way.

Andrew Rose Gregory is trying to raise $9,000 to release his lost album. Well, it's not really lost, but it's been sitting on a shelf for the last year and a half or so.

"It's a modern folk rock setting of the Song of Songs, the book of love poetry from the Hebrew Bible," says Gregory.

Gregory is best known as a member of the Gregory Brothers, the crew behind the wildly popular Auto-Tune the News YouTube videos. But he's been a musician for years and he sees Kickstarter as a way to finally put out this album he really cares about.

"I was trying to shop it to record labels, but I've just gotten impatient and now that Kickstarter's really blown up in the last two years, I just think it's a great avenue for me to do it myself in a better way than I've done my albums before," says Gregory.

But artists and musicians aren't the only ones who see opportunity in Kickstarter. Dave Petrillo and David Jackson invented something called Coffee Joulies. They go in your coffee cup to keep your beverage at the perfect temperature for drinking. Joulies are made of stainless steel formed to look like oversized coffee beans and they're filled with a temperature-regulating material.

Petrillo and Jackson wanted to raise $10,000 to turn their prototype into a real product. But after their video went viral, they raised more than $300,000.

"This took off really fast, way faster than we thought it was going to," says Dave Petrillo.

Coffee Joulies is now up and running at Sherrill Manufacturing, a silverware factory in upstate New York that was nearly shuddered until the two Daves showed up.

"If we weren't on Kickstarter we'd have to basically build some ourselves, sell them to raise some more money, build some more and it would have taken at least a year of doing that to get anywhere close to where we are now," says David Jackson. "And we just completely leapfrogged that within a month."

These more entrepreneurial projects built around a product have taken Kickstarter by storm in recent months. Kickstarter's Yancey Strickler says the company didn't know what to make of it at first.

"I think our hearts are very much with the small idiosyncratic arts projects of, you know, some girl in Milwaukee doing something interesting for $500. Or the really imaginative documentary. That's sort of our world," says Strickler. "But I think that these products have brought an interesting element to Kickstarter that has really helped everybody. So I think it's something that we get more comfortable with every day."

What all the projects on Kickstarter have in common is they tell a story ? a story about the creators, and their desire to make something, be it a neat gadget or an album or a musical based on a TV show about aliens.

The Quivering Pen: A Short Story Month Miscellany

As May draws to a close and another National Short Story Month enters the history books, I thought I'd point you to a few other places celebrating short fiction, as well as a couple of guest posts I wrote elseweb.

1.? One of the freshest lit blogs on the block is Reader's Quest.? Despite Jerri's claim to be "absolutely underqualified to be blogging about short stories," I think she does a damned fine job of taking a Phillips-head screwdriver to literature, prying off the back of short stories, and describing what she finds in the inner cogs and pulleys.? She has a very ambitious and calculated plan for her "year of reading and thinking about short stories."? Bookmark and subscribe to the Quest today.? That's a commandment.

2.? After the demise of the dearly-departed Readerville, one of the best communities to rise out of its ashes has been Book Balloon.? Discussion about books, writing and the arts in general is always lively, fun and stimulating.? With my schedule the way it is these days, I don't drop in as often as I should; but when I do, I find the chatter is always smart and perky.? Chief Balloonist Gary Glass recently wrote to me, saying they had a specific need at one of the forums.? Here's what he said:

BookBalloon is looking for a short story discussion host. BookBalloon members love to talk about literature of all kinds, including short stories. If you'd enjoy leading insightful story discussions with thoughtful, well-read people, stop by the forum and check out our "Story of the Week" thread.
(You may need to register as a forum user at Book Balloon--but it's free and totally worth it.)

3.? I review Francine Witte's superb chapbook of flash fiction, Cold June, at the Emerging Writer's Network.? The review begins thusly:

???? The best short-short stories are trash compactors. Short-shorts (aka flash fiction, micro-fiction, and postcard fiction) are repositories of all the scraps of life?the fruit peels, the hair clumps, the soup cans, the utility bills, the paper towels which soaked up that puddle of cat vomit you found with your bare feet on the kitchen floor at 2 a.m. Short-shorts squeeze and compress the whole beautiful trashy experience of life down to an unbelievably-small, impermeably-hard cube of matter which, if you could reconstitute it, would expand to the size of the average Dickens novel.
???? In her award-winning chapbook from Ropewalk Press, Cold June, Francine Witte delivers stories the size of a breadbox, but you always walk away feeling like you?ve eaten an entire bakery. The book is 26 pages long and there are 23 stories. That should give you some idea of length. What it doesn?t indicate is the depth and breadth of the stories.
Click HERE to read the full review.

3a.? If I didn't say it before, I'll say it now: I am absolutely in love with the cover of Cold June.? The colors, the font, the whimsy of the over-scarfed kid--it all adds up to one of my favorite designs of this or any year.? Frameable.

4.? Matt Bell kindly allowed me to rant and rave about the pleasures of Joshua Foster's short story "Inside Out."? I mentioned the story earlier in my discussion about Fugue magazine, but at Bell's blog, I stretched out a little bit more and got pretty particular with my lit-love:
???? If there's one lesson to be learned from Joshua Foster's short story "Inside Out" (published in Fugue, Winter-Spring 2010, Vol. 38), it's this: enlightenment can be found when you're shoulder-deep in a heifer's ass. You'd expect to find that sort of thing in a New West story by Annie Proulx or William Kittredge, but newcomer Foster boldly stakes his claim as a writer to watch in this gritty, moving coming-of-age story set in the ranchlands of eastern Idaho.
???? Foster moves from tension to tension, stringing conflict like barbed wire as 17-year-old narrator Jeremiah Foster (who, for what it's worth, also has a younger brother named Joshua) oversleeps on Sunday, decides to skip church, helps ranch-hand Jarrett Buckett with a troublesome heifer who won't go into the calving pen, and ends up turning the cow "inside out" in a brutal, bloody climax.
Read the rest of the article HERE.

5.? Earlier on his blog, Matt had some nice things to say about my short story, "The Things He Saw," which appeared in Connecticut Review last Fall.

6.? And finally, if you aren't sick to death of my self-involved self-aggrandizing self-promotion, you can check out another of my short stories, "Joyride," which was recently published at The Center for Fiction's new web-magazine The Literarian.

Lively Determined Not To Fall Into Fame Trap

2 hours ago | WENN | See recent WENN news ?

Blake Lively is determined not to make the same "mistakes" as other young stars such as Lindsay Lohan, because she is convinced impressionable young fans need more "great role models".

The Gossip Girl star, 23, is adamant she is not part of the celebrity party circuit and shuns glitzy events in favour of spending time at home with her family.

Lively hopes she can provide a good example to youngsters after years of seeing troubled young stars hit headlines for the wrong reasons, including Mean Girls star Lohan who has been in and out of jail and rehab in recent months.

She tells Britain's The Independent, "I was raised in a very rounded family from the South and (was) never much of a party girl, and if I were I would think of the obligations that I have to young girls, because I feel that there are not too many great role models, although now some are emerging.

"In the last few years the paparazzi have played out the lives of these girls for everyone to see, and so many people make mistakes at that age in our lives and it all takes place in front of the camera."

Paypal v. Google: a tawdry tale of trade secret misappropriation

Google and its poached Paypal employees got sued for trade secret misappropriation yesterday, but we didn't know the dirty details until now. A peek at PayPal's complaint reveals there's a bit more to the story. Apparently, Paypal and Google were in talks last year to use PayPal for payments in the Android Market. Osama Bedier was in charge of those negotiations for PayPal in October of 2010, when the deal was supposed to close, but was allegedly interviewing for a mobile payment position at Google at the same time (holy conflict of interest, Batman!). The complaint claims that Bedier initially rebuffed El Goog's advances, told PayPal of the job offer and professed that he would stay, but jumped ship a month later (bringing some PayPal coworkers with him) after being recruited by Stephanie Tilenius and the almighty dollar. Once it hired Osama, Google put the brakes on the PayPal deal and created Google Wallet. Then Google, Bedier, and Tilenius got slapped with a lawsuit. A brief rundown of the legal claims awaits you after the break.

Self-Directing Your Retirement Pan To Include Arizona Investment ...

The majority of people that invest in a retirement plan are clueless about the options available to them.? Most have their 401k or IRA account through their employer or managed by some larger financial institution (supposedly looking out for the investor?s best interests).? The sad fact is that most people do not even know what their investments are made up of.? They just contribute money to a plan for someone else to manage.? This is a retirement ?plan?, but just whose ?plan? is it?

Up until about 2 years ago, I had the same line of thinking. ?Work for a corporation and contribute to a 401k comprised of a diversified portfolio of mutual funds.? It was not until I saw my retirement account get hammered by the economic downturn that I woke up and saw that I needed to take control.? At the end of the day, it needed to be my ?plan?. After doing some research, I stumbled on a company that specialized in self-directed retirement accounts.? This was a concept that I had not heard before.? A retirement plan that truly allows the investor to direct what they are invested in, such as Arizona investment property.

Arizona investment property can make a great addition to a retirement plan, especially with how many opportunities are present in the current real estate market.? Property prices are significantly discounted and state of the current rental market is driving up returns on cash flow investments. ?I recently picked up a condominium, within my retirement account, as a cash flow investment that is returning over 11%.? The best part about it is that now I have full control of my retirement.

This is not a solicitation for self-directed retirement accounts nor am I a licensed financial planner. I am an individual investor who was tired of someone else planning my retirement. ?The option of self-directing your retirement plan may not fit into your investment strategy, but at least you now know something you may not have known before reading this post.?

Whether you are purchasing Arizona investment property through your retirement plan or through any other means, it is important to align yourself with a company that truly has your best interests at heart.? Learn more about how Clear Vision Investment Group can be your partner in building a successful portfolio of Arizona investment property.

Advertising Channels For Your Business | All-Insight Articles

What a wonderful invention it is, this thing we call the Internet!

If you would just take your time to know your way around, you could discover a lot of premium products and services being offered for free. What?s best is that there is a seemingly endless number of these wonderful finds, what with the Internet being a vast network of constantly evolving ideas and all!

Among these magnificent benefits is the chance to be able to promote your business, any business, online, free of charge! It doesn?t matter if your enterprise is a purely online or offline venture, the World Wide Web is home to a great number of marketing opportunities that you could avail of, with no damage to your business? budget whatsoever.

Advertising can be a big problem otherwise. A lot of companies reserve a big chunk of their budgets to cover marketing expenditures. Sometimes, these gambles pay off, but there are occasions when they fail miserably, putting to waste some good money that could have been used in other areas of development for the business involved.

But with the many channels available online, marketing has become a less risky course of action. There so many avenues available online where you could advertise your business for free and attain more exposure for your products or services. Here are some of them.

1. You could advertise through your own website. Ordinarily, you should pay a nominal fee for web hosting and your domain name. A paid web hosting service is more reliable. Your own domain name would impress upon your visitors an immediate sense of professionalism. But if you don?t want to spend for them, there are a lot of free web space providers on the Internet!

2. You could advertise through other people?s websites. And you could do this in a lot of ways too! You could create a banner that would summarize your business? offers and have it displayed on existing pages. Or if you have your won website for your business, you could use the said banner to link to your pages, or you could even settle for simple links. Additionally, you could have other webmasters rave about your venture and they could talk about it in their own websites.

3. You could create your own affiliate program. By giving commissions as incentive, you could invite a lot of Internet users to become your affiliates. Each affiliate would work to help you make a sale. It?s like having a battalion of sales representatives that you?d only have to pay if they manage to refer a willing customer!

4. You could try viral marketing. Viral marketing is the online equivalent of word o mouth advertising. By giving away something for free, for as long as that something has a link or a simple reference to your business, you?re encouraging the recipient to spread the word about your business to the people he knows. This would result in the exponential expansion of your business message like wildfire.

5. You could advertise in online communities. Forums and mailing lists are popular venues that could likewise convey your business message. Membership to these groups is usually free.

New Republic: Sudan May Be Slipping Into Civil War

Pete Muller/AP

Hundreds of southern Sudanese take part in a demonstration against northern Sudan's military incursion into the border town of Abyei in the southern capital of Juba on May 23. The northern Sudanese military took effective control of Abyei on Saturday.

Rebecca Hamilton is the author of Fighting for Darfur and a fellow at the New America Foundation. Her Sudan reporting is supported by funding from the Pulitzer Center.

The residents of Abyei, the largest town of the contested border region between north and south Sudan, have deserted their homes in search of safety after the northern government took the town by force this weekend. The seizure of the town follows an ambush by a southern group on a convoy of northern forces who were withdrawing from the town under U.N. escort. According to U.N. deputy spokesperson Hua Jiang, 15 Sudanese army tanks rolled into the town on Saturday evening. Heavy shelling ensued, and a mortar was fired on the U.N. compound in the area, wounding two peacekeepers. Medecins Sans Frontiers reported treating 42 wounded in the weekend attack, adding to the human cost of violence in the area, which has claimed over 100 lives already this year.

The ongoing violence is a reflection of a political failure to resolve whether Abyei will belong to the north or the south when, following a referendum vote earlier this year, they officially split into two countries on July 9. Sudan observers have long predicted that Abyei might be a trigger for the resumption of civil war. Twenty-two years of conflict between the Sudanese government in the predominantly Arab and Muslim north and rebels in the mainly Christian and animist south came to an end with a 2005 peace deal. But the two sides were never able to agree on the status of Abyei, an area known for its lush grasslands in the rainy season and for a river, called Kiir by southerners and Bahr el Arab by northerners, that is a vital water source throughout the dry season. (Contrary to common misperception, the area is not rich with oil, although lucrative oil fields do lie just beyond its borders.) Today, Abyei's future has become infused with symbolic value that has made it particularly resistant to a negotiated settlement.

Whether the Sudanese government's seizure of Abyei will now escalate into the broader conflict many analysts have feared depends in large part on whether the South Sudan government exercises restraint, and whether it can convince the affected populations on the ground, who identify as southerners, to do the same. Unfortunately, such restraint requires faith in the possibility of a non-military solution, and events since the signing of the 2005 peace agreement have shown that military restraint brings little in the way of political gain. Indeed, despite international backing, agreements about the future of Abyei have rarely ever been implemented, leaving residents little reason to believe a resolution will come without a fight.

Abyei has been the subject of a series of failed agreements since 2005. First, an Abyei Protocol was supposed to provide a joint administration for the region and determine its geographical boundaries. When the Sudanese government's ruling National Congress Party refused to accept the boundaries proposed, implementation of the protocol stalled. Uncertainty fuelled tension in Abyei, and fighting broke out between northern and southern troops in May 2008. Human Rights Watch reported that northern troops and their allied militia razed much of the town, forcing 60,000 civilians to flee. At that time, effective high-level diplomacy convinced the southern leadership not to retaliate, and the north withdrew its forces; the violence, while devastating, did not spread beyond Abyei.

Following the 2008 violence, a diplomatic scramble ensued. An Abyei Roadmap was agreed to, and the boundaries dispute was sent to arbitration in The Hague. The 2008 agreements confirmed the central feature of the 2005 Abyei Protocol: The status of Abyei would be decided by a referendum, held simultaneously with South Sudan's self-determination referendum. But, while the South Sudan referendum went ahead this January, with 98.5 percent of voters choosing independent nationhood, the two sides could not agree on who constituted a "resident" for the purposes of voting in the Abyei referendum. The Sudanese government argued that the Misseriya, a nomadic group from the north who travel through Abyei in the dry season to graze their livestock, should be allowed to vote. The South Sudan government argued that only those who live in Abyei year-round, mostly the Ngok Dinka, a southern ethnic group, should participate. In the end, the Abyei referendum was sidelined.

Since then, political rhetoric has heated up on both sides. The South Sudan government recently included Abyei as part of its territory in its draft constitution, while, at state elections earlier this month, Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir told voters in the Misseriya stronghold of South Kordofan that Abyei "is located in north Sudan and will remain in north Sudan." The rhetoric has been accompanied by an escalation of both northern and southern troops in the area. Imagery obtained by Satellite Sentinel, a joint venture of the Enough Project and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and spearheaded by Hollywood actor George Clooney, has shown the amassing of both tanks and air power on the northern side in recent months. The U.N. has brokered repeated agreements for the north and south to withdraw the troops, with the latest agreement being signed just last week. But so far, none of those agreements have been fully implemented.

For the moment, the South Sudan government is saying it will not retaliate against the seizure of Abyei town. Instead, South Sudan's Minister of Information Barnaba Marial Benjamin is calling on the U.N. Security Council to ensure the Sudanese government withdraws its forces, and, on Sunday, the U.N. Secretary General and the ambassadors for the U.S., France and Russia all obliged by calling on the Sudanese government to remove its troops immediately. But, as is often the case for the U.N. in Sudan, the question is whether it can back up its message with action in the face of the defiant Sudanese government, which has already rejected the call for withdrawal.

This weekend, as during the 2008 violence, U.N. troops in Abyei retreated to their bunkers as fighting escalated, indicating the international community's unwillingness to show muscle in Abyei. If withdrawal has to be negotiated instead, Khartoum will likely try to extract a high price, asking for a new deal that favors the north getting Abyei and offers better terms in the ongoing talks over the division of oil and other resources following the formal independence of South Sudan on July 9. Without question, rewarding Khartoum for its seizure of Abyei would send the wrong message to all parties. Yet allowing the negotiations to stall for too long will also create risks.

If progress toward a resolution stalls, resistance in South Sudan to the government's call for restraint in Abyei will build from two sources. The first are those within the southern government who hail from Abyei and who fought as part of the south during the long war against the Sudanese government. These leaders, including Deng Alor, Edward Lino and Luka Biong, all believe that Abyei belongs to the south, and they must be convinced that their chances of securing their homeland as part of the new country are greater through negotiation than through military action. It will be a tough enough sell given recent history ? tougher still if negotiations drag out and the north has demands that are unpalatable to the south. The second source of agitation will be the Ngok Dinka, who permanently inhabit Abyei town. I spoke with many of them earlier this year, just after the date of the promised Abyei referendum had passed. From traditional leaders to youth organizers, there was a uniform sense of betrayal; their compatriots were getting to determine their own future, while residents of Abyei were not. They had already begun to consider making a unilateral declaration that Abyei belonged to the south. Today, with north occupying Abyei town, the Ngok Dinka's frustration is at a boil.

Much rides on what happens in Abyei over the coming days and weeks. The international community, including the new U.S. envoy to Sudan, Arab and African regional bodies, and China, must unify to pressure to the north to withdraw its troops without concession, while the southern government must try to keep a lid on its people's anger over Abyei's years in violent limbo. Promises mean little to people who have been forced to flee for their lives, for the second time in just three years. Either a continuing occupation of Abyei by northern troops or a painful slowing of diplomatic negotiations between the two sides could set off fighting. If that happens, Sudan may find itself again in a state of deadly civil war.
