UofT prof facing child porn ceases ?all university activities?

The University of Toronto says a professor facing several child porn charges has ceased all university activities.

The university issued a brief statement last week saying charges were laid against Benjamin Levin, a professor at its Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

Levin, 61, was also a member of Premier Kathleen Wynne?s transition team and deputy education minister in former premier Dalton McGuinty?s government from late 2004 to early 2007.

?The charges against Professor Levin are extremely serious. The University understands that an individual is innocent until proven guilty,? the school?s July 17 statement said. ?In this case the gravity of the charges in relation to the mission of OISE is such that Professor Levin has ceased all University activities at this time.?

On July 8, Levin was charged with making child porn, counselling to commit an indictable offence, arrangement of a sexual offence against a child under 16 and two counts of distributing child pornography. He was charged with two additional offences of possessing and accessing child porn during a bail hearing two days later.

Levin, who also served as Manitoba?s deputy education minister between 1999 and 2002, was granted bail with condition that he not possess a passport, live with his wife ? provided she agrees to it, have limited Internet access and no contact with children.

Levin?s lawyer, Clayton Ruby, said his client plans to ?vigorously? fight the allegations against him.
