From its backstory, Tropic of Cancer would seem the unique dark rock band for the minimal club music set. It began as a collaboration between Los Angeles? Camella Lobo and her partner Juan Mendez, aka Silent Servant, one of the founders of storied NYC techno label Sandwell District; its first few releases came out on Downwards, the longtime bastion of brutally pounding sounds that rose out of Birmingham, UK in the ?90s. Recently, the band has evolved into more of a solo project for Lobo, its terrifically floaty, bass-heavy, drum-machine-driven love songs fleshed out with some help from Taylor Burch on guitar. ?More Alone,? which was produced by Downwards founder Regis, chugs along on a motorik beat with hits of boomy synth and some half-obscured, hopeless romantic musings from Lobo?s world-weary alto. It?s the a-side of an upcoming seven-inch from the project, which is out in August via Blackest Ever Black ahead of a new double-LP, Restless Idylls, on September 23. Tourdates below.
