"Guardians of the Galaxy" director sorry for blog post seen as sexist, homophobic

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - James Gunn, the man entrusted with steering Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" to the big screen, apologized publicly for a 2011 blog post that was criticized as sexist and homophobic.

Gunn, who is best known for directing the 2006 horror-comedy "Slither," found himself under fire this week after reports about a blog post titled "The 50 Superheroes You Most Want to Have Sex With." In it, he called the superhero Gambit a "Cajun fruit" and suggested that Iron Man could "turn" the lesbian Batwoman into a straight woman. He went on to joke that Batgirl, a masked avenger who happens to be a teen mother, was "easy." The list was voted on by Twitter and Facebook users, but has since been removed from his site.

In a statement to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), Gunn said his attempt at irreverence was misguided and stressed that he is a proponent of gay rights and women's rights.

"A couple of years ago I wrote a blog that was meant to be satirical and funny," Gunn said. "In rereading it over the past day I don't think it's funny. The attempted humor in the blog does not represent my actual feelings. However, I can see where statements were poorly worded and offensive to many. I'm sorry and regret making them at all."

The post is an unwanted distraction from his efforts to give Marvel and its corporate owner the Walt Disney Company another hit. He plans to co-write the script for "Guardians of the Galaxy" in addition to directing. The film will be released in 2014.

"It kills me that some other outsider like myself, despite his or her gender or sexuality, might feel hurt or attacked by something I said," he added in his apology. "We're all in the same camp, and I want to do my best to make this world a better place for all of us. I'm learning all the time. I promise to be more careful with my words in the future. And I will do my best to be funnier as well. Much love to all."

George Zimmerman Autograph Sales Funding Legal Defense in ...

George Zimmerman's autograph is being sold to fund his defense in the high-profile Trayvon Martin murder case ... just in case you thought you'd heard everything.

Yes, the man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin is sending personally signed thank-you cards to anyone who donates money to his legal defense fund.

Each card will be individually signed by George, the identity of all donors will be kept confidential, and the envelope of the cards will not bear his name.

Just in case you don't want the mailman finding out.

Why go this route? He's burdened with hefty "living expenses and legal costs," according to GZDefenseFund (dot) com, though this claim is debatable.

Donors who support George Zimmerman's self-defense claim have reportedly already raised hundreds of thousands for his defense and protection.

In any case, Zimmerman will plead not guilty to second-degree murder, citing Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, at a hearing that could happen as soon as April.

CFTC Position Limits Update: GOP Taps Hensarling, Won?t Change Tune

Posted byFelix Shipkevich on Nov 28, 2012 | 0 comments

The U.S. Commodity and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) will likely be at odds with new GOP Financial Services Committee head, Jeb Hensarling. Hensarling previously served as committee Vice Chairman under Spencer Bachus, who stepped down after reaching the maximum term limit for committee chairman.

Hensarling, who represents Texas? 5th congressional district, is currently the chairman of the House Republican Conference. He is known as an opponent of ?too-big-to-fail? banking, bailouts, and was nicknamed ?budget nanny? by National Review?a position he is thought to have inherited from Phil Gramm.

Hensarling is considered a rising figure in matters of finance on the American legislative scene. In 2008 he coauthored the Economic Growth Act.

Hensarling vs. CFTC on Position Limits

It is unlikely that Hensarling will change the GOP?s tune on position limits. In October he served as one of the ?four horsemen? who worked to undermine the CFTC through a letter that called the agency?s pursuit of position limits ?ideological? and ?wasteful.?

The CFTC suffered a setback in late September when its position limits rule was blocked by U.S. District Court Judge Robert Wilkins. The rule would have limited the number of contracts traders can hold in 28 commodities, including oil, coffee and gold. The agency is currently looking to appeal the ruling.

There is controversy over whether position limits are actually mandated by the Dodd-Frank Act, a piece of legislation meant to curtail another financial crisis. Current CFTC chairman Gary Gensler has called position limits ?critical? to financial regulation more broadly.

?As part of the Dodd-Frank Act, Congress directed the Commission to limit promptly speculative positions in physical commodity futures and options contracts and economically equivalent swaps. The rule addresses Congress? concern that that no single trader be permitted to obtain too large a share of the market, and that derivatives markets remain fair and competitive,? Gensler said earlier this month.

AP Metal Smith ? Blog Archive ? auto insurance-Oro Valley

auto insurance Oro Valley AZ Each year, more cars travel America?s roads. This can lead to a higher possibility of a car accident for you and your family. If you get in a car crash, the car insurance you have can make a big difference in how much you have to pay. But why do you need insurance and just how much should you buy? Car crashes can result in a variety of different expenses, which your insurance might be able to pay for based on the insurance policy you own. No matter where you live, you are required to buy some type of car insurance. Making the decision to drive without insurance could mean you have to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of any damage for which you might be responsible. Liability: It pays for the expenses you are responsible for in a car accident, including property damage and injury. It also covers your legal fees if you are sued. Local laws usually mandate standard amounts of liability insurance, but higher amounts are available and extremely helpful. Personal Injury Protection: This type of insurance pays for hospital bills and other medical treatment for you or other people in your car, no matter who was responsible for the accident. It is occasionally referred to as no-fault coverage. This insurance can also pay for lost wages, service replacement and funeral expenses. Local government usually sets minimum amounts. Medical Payments: This type of coverage can be purchased in non-no-fault states and will pay regardless of who is responsible for an accident. It pays for an insured person?s necessary medical or funeral expenses resulting from an accident. Collision: Pays for damage to your car caused by an accident. Comprehensive: Applies if your car is stolen or damaged by something other than a collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured Motorist: Pays for repair and replacement costs when someone with insurance is in a crash caused by a driver who does not have liability insurance or by a hit-and-run driver. Under-Insured Motorist: Just like uninsured coverage, this type of insurance covers you from people driving without sufficient insurance coverage. Emergency road service, car rental, and other types of car insurance can also be purchased. Your auto insurance payments varies based on the company and will depend on multiple factors, such as: *Your selected coverage *Your vehicle?s make and model * Whether or not you have been in an accident * Your age, sex and marital status * Where you live Many drivers think they can get by without car insurance, but it is honestly something you don?t want to live without. Review your needs, research your options, and with the guidance of your insurance agent, make the decision that best suits you.

M23 rebels say they won't leave Congo city of Goma

GOMA, Congo (AP) ? The political leader of the M23 rebels says his group will not leave the strategic eastern Congo city of Goma and is ready to fight the Congolese army, defying a deadline imposed by a regional group of nations.

Speaking in Goma Tuesday, M23 president Jean-Marie Runiga said the rebels won't leave the city of 1 million. The deadline imposed by the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region for the rebels to depart was midnight Monday.

Runiga told a press conference the M23 is prepared to fight the Congo army to maintain control of Goma, which the rebels seized a week ago. The M23 was created seven months ago by former rebels who joined and then defected from the Congo army. The group is allegedly supported by Rwanda and Uganda.

China defense chief: Military buildup no threat to the world

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's military buildup poses no threat to the world, Defense Minister Liang Guanglie said on Tuesday, in an effort to allay fears among Asian neighbors amid long-running maritime disputes.

The United States, Japan and many other Southeast Asian states have frequently expressed worries about China's double-digit defense spending increases and expanding naval reach, saying Beijing's plans lack transparency.

"There is absolutely no need for that," Liang told Reuters, when asked about neighbors' concerns.

"The Chinese military must develop, but there's no 'worry' or 'fear' as the outside world says," he said before a meeting with visiting U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus. "That's not what China is about."

China's growing military influence has coincided with a more assertive diplomatic tone, evident in rows with Japan and Southeast Asia over disputed islands. China has also told the United States, with President Barack Obama's "pivot" to Asia, not to get involved.

Liang, speaking at China's Defense Ministry, stressed the need for cooperation between Beijing and Washington, which has called on China to share more about its military ambitions.

"We should develop the ties between us, between our two militaries, touch on some of our differences, resolve conflicting views," Liang said before meeting Mabus.

"We should push forward the development of our two powers, and push forward the development of a new China-U.S. military relationship," he said. "Our two countries' ties are very important."

The modernization of China's army in particular has raised concern in the region. China's People's Liberation Army, which encompasses all branches of the military, has launched a new wave of technology and hardware this year.

It has test-flown its first two stealth fighters, and launched its first aircraft carrier, which it bought from Ukraine and refurbished. This month, it unveiled a new attack helicopter.

China has also been raising its profile in the South and East China Seas this year, reasserting its sovereignty over islands or waters also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan and others.

China ushered in a new generation of leaders this month at the 18th Communist Party Congress in Beijing, with outgoing President Hu Jintao making a pointed reference to strengthening China's naval forces, protecting maritime interests and the need to "win local war".

Both Vietnam and the Philippines have previously complained about Chinese activity and even harassment in contested parts of the South China Sea.

China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan all claim territory in the sea, which covers important shipping routes and is thought to hold untapped oil and gas reserves.

China's claim is by far the largest, forming a vast U-shape over most of the sea's 648,000 square miles (1.7 million square km), including the Spratly and Paracel archipelagos.

Sino-Japanese relations are also under strain after the Japanese government bought disputed islands, triggering violent protests and calls for boycotts of Japanese products across China.

How You Can Make Your Home Based Business ... - Jim McGilvary

Have you ever noticed how many work at home ads there are? The truth is, that many people are trying to sell you on the idea of working from home. While people do work from home, it is not something that has a magic formula for success. This article provides a few excellent tips that can help you get started with your home based business.

Laughter is the best medicine. Laughing has a lot of benefits, including calming you down, reducing stress, working out the respiratory system and making you feel joyful. Check out some funny videos on YouTube or Laugh or Die, and you?ll be ready to get back to work in no time!

Make an email address, mailing address and telephone number available for your customers to reach you. Establish a database that links your customers to their purchases. Your response may have impacted their decision; determine what you did to secure the sale so you can do the same thing in the future.

TIP! You can get consumed by work if you live where you work. Have a dedicated work space and work schedule.

Start a landscaping business or a daycare center. Build a webpage, and try your hand at one of the many Internet marketing businesses. There are so many options for you to help out people around you, so brainstorm!

To work effectively, it?s important to set a fixed schedule. This means putting your schedule in writing, and setting limits that will keep you from becoming exhausted. Sometimes working overtime is necessary, but you want balance your work with your life as much as possible. Always make time to hang out with the family, as this is a great stress reliever.

Your work from home business should have an objective. Don?t make it too long, but do succinctly state why your business exists and what it can do for your customers. Give your objective when people ask about your business. It will allows you to impress your customers by being confident and succinct about the purpose of your business.

TIP! If you aren?t very confident with tax codes, you may be better off hiring an accountant to help you file. Taxes can be a very complex process when you?re a home business owner, and the time you?d spend doing them properly is time better spent on your business.

Write a comprehensive business plan to guide the strategy of your online business. Your business plan isn?t fixed; you can change it in response to market realities, or even put it aside. However, a well-written business plan offers valuable guidance and creates a sense of purpose and direction for your business. Frequently update the details of your plan as your business evolves.

Try to find the average market price before you sell something. This clues you in on what customers are willing to pay for your product or service. Look at your competitors? prices so you can offer your product at a slightly cheaper cost. Never talk negatively about your competition, focus on marketing your good qualities.

TIP! Dedicate a specific part of your house to your business, and set it up as a work area. Having ample room in your home is essential for maintaining organization.

If you are having difficulty deciding on a product for your home business enterprise, think about what you could use in your life. Figuring out what consumers need is the most important step in choosing a product to sell. The higher the chance that you could use an item or service, the higher the chance others could use that item or service too.

In the beginning, minimize your spending for your home based business. When your work location is your own home, you will not have any rental costs for a separate business location. You can keep costs low be refraining from unnecessary purchases. Low business expenses translate into lower retail prices for your products.

To keep your business and personal emails separate, set up an extra email account using your business?s domain name. View your email with different services as well. For example, use gmail for your personal mail, and Outlook for your business mail.

TIP! Set clear boundaries when it comes to visits from friends and family during your work hours. Do not be afraid to tell uninvited visitors that you are in the middle of working, whether it?s a friend who always stops unexpectedly or a family member who consistently shows up too early.

As you have just learned, there are many people trying to sell you on scams. However, as you?ve learned throughout this article, there are also many common-sense tips and tactics that you can use in order to grow your home business. If you?re willing to put in the work, you can certainly be successful.

AP Interview: Hamas No. 2 rejects Gaza arms halt

CAIRO (AP) ? Gaza's ruling Hamas will not stop arming itself because only a strong arsenal, not negotiations, can extract concessions from Israel, the No. 2 in the Islamic militant group told The Associated Press in an interview Saturday.

The comments by Moussa Abu Marzouk, just three days after the worst bout of Israel-Hamas fighting in four years, signaled trouble ahead for Egyptian-brokered talks between the hostile neighbors on a new border deal.

Hamas demands that Israel and Egypt lift all restrictions on the movement of goods and people in and out of the Palestinian territory, which has been buckling under a border blockade since the Islamists seized the territory in 2007. The restrictions have been eased somewhat in recent years, but not enough to allow Gaza's battered economy to develop.

Israeli officials were not immediately available for comment Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath. However, an Israeli security official said this week that Israel would likely link a significant easing of the blockade to Hamas's willingness to stop smuggling weapons into Gaza and producing them there.

Abu Marzouk said Saturday that the group would not disarm, arguing that recent Palestinian history has shown that negotiations with Israel lead nowhere unless backed by force.

"There is no way to relinquish weapons," Abu Marzouk said in his office on the outskirts of Cairo. "These weapons protected us and there is no way to stop obtaining and manufacturing them."

Hamas' founding charter calls for Israel's destruction, but leaders of the group have also said they are ready for a long-term cease-fire with the Jewish state.

The group is believed to have amassed a large arsenal of thousands of rockets since Israel's last military offensive in Gaza four years ago. Hamas has been smuggling weapons through tunnels under the border with Egypt, but also claims to have begun manufacturing longer-range rockets in Gaza.

During the latest round of fighting, Hamas fired Iranian-made Fajr-5 rockets that came close to Israel's heartland, including the cities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for the first time. Israel warplanes pounded the tunnel area during the offensive to disrupt smuggling, and tunnel operators reported serious damage, but in the past were able to rebuild quickly.

Hamas used to be evasive about Iranian weapons support, but in recent days senior officials in the group have openly thanked Tehran. Gaza strongman Mahmoud Zahar told reporters on Saturday that he is confident that Iran will increase military and financial support to Hamas and the smaller militant group Islamic Jihad.

Iran and its regional rivals, the Sunni Muslim-led states in the Gulf, have been competing in recent months to lure Hamas into their respective camps. The top Hamas leader in exile, Khaled Mashaal, is being hosted by the Gulf state of Qatar, which has promised hundreds of millions of dollars for Gaza reconstruction.

Zahar said Saturday that Hamas is not beholden to anyone, but defended the group's ties with Iran. "If they don't like it, let them compete with Iran in giving us weapons and money," he said in an apparent jab at the Gulf states.

Abu Marzouk, meanwhile, said Hamas would not stand in the way of a bid by its main political rival, internationally backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, to seek U.N. recognition for a state of Palestine next week.

Abbas will ask the U.N. General Assembly to approve "Palestine" ? made up of the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, areas Israel captured in 1967 ? as a non-member observer state.

Such a state is far from being established, but Palestinians hope U.N. recognition would affirm its future borders, to be used as a baseline once negotiations with Israel resume. Israel, while willing to cede some land, refuses with withdraw to the 1967 lines and opposes Abbas' U.N. move as an attempt to bypass negotiations. Israel has moved half a million Israelis into settlements on war-won land.

Abu Marzouk suggested that Abbas is wasting his time at the U.N. "Hamas believes the General Assembly is not the one to create states," he said. "Occupation needs resistance, not negotiations."

Israel and the West have shunned Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in shootings and bombings over the years, as a terror organization. However, Hamas officials believe the boycott is slowly eroding, pointing to U.S. support for the cease-fire deal brokered by Egypt and the ongoing indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

Overall, Hamas leaders have claimed the group has emerged victorious from this round, noting that Israel did not make good on threats to send ground troops into Gaza. Israel says it has achieved its goal of halting rocket fire on Israel.

Abu Marzouk said the next round of indirect talks will take place in Cairo on Monday. He has not met his Israeli interlocutors, he said, but said they are security officials and experts on border arrangements.

Until late last year, most top Hamas leaders in exile were based in Syria, the Islamists' main foreign backer in addition to Iran. However, Syrian President Bashar Assad's brutal crackdown on a popular uprising there made Hamas' alliance with the Damascus regime untenable.

Abu Marzouk, who has settled in a quiet Cairo suburb, said the follow-up talks with Israel were going well so far.

In Gaza, residents said Saturday that Israel has already eased some restrictions.

Fishermen were able to sail six nautical miles out to sea, or double the previous limit, said Mahfouz Kabariti, head of the local fishermen's association. "This is an opportunity and a chance for a better catch, though it is still a limited area," said Kabariti, who represents some 3,500 fishermen.

Israeli navy boats have been enforcing a sea blockade in an attempt to prevent weapons smuggling to Gaza. The restrictions on fishermen have fluctuated over the years, linked to the ups and downs in Israeli-Palestinian relations.

Meanwhile, some Gaza residents said they were able to enter an Israeli-enforced buffer zone on the Gaza side of the border Saturday with Israel without fear of being fired on.

Israel's military had carved out a 300-meter-wide (300-yard-wide) zone several years to try to prevent militants from sneaking into Israel. The zone gobbled up scarce farmland in one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

On Saturday, 42-year-old farmer Nidal Abu Dakka said soldiers stood and watched as he and others moved close to the fence. In other border areas, residents said Hamas police kept them away from the fence.

An Israeli government spokesman said he was unaware restrictions had been eased. A defense official said the Israeli military was no longer enforcing the no-go zone, but reserved the right to act against suspicious people. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the issue with reporters.

Former UFC fighter loses his house to fire on Thanksgiving

Former UFC fighter Dennis Hallman lost his home to a fire on Thanksgiving. The lightweight who has been fighting since 1996 shared the sad news on his Facebook page.

Sad thanks giving for me and my family. My house burned down early this AM. Thank God no one was hurt and I have that to be thankful for. Something like this makes my recent direction change all the harder...the one person that could make me feel okay about everything is no longer here. When God wants you to have a fresh start sometimes he really wants to make his point clear.

He and his family were unhurt, but a report on a fire at Hallman's address said it amounts to more than $180,000 in damage. The first floor was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene.

[Also: GSP returns to MMA rankings]

It's been a rough stretch for the 36-year-old fighter. He blew weight for his UFC on FX 5 bout with Thiago Tavares. The bout was canceled after Hallman said he was not fit to fight and dealing with personal issues. He was then cut from the UFC.

Thank you, Fighter's Only.

The Science of Thanks Giving

There's such a thing as the 'reader' (the human-kind, I mean),
or in a broader sense, the 'consumer' (not meant in its commer-

There's some indication that gripes, cynicism, irony, angst and
all the nefarious psychological categories you can think of that
come with them -- put down in bytes, ink, celluloid or on stage,
provide for greater literature and entertainment.

NICTA applies IT to prostate cancer research

A cross-disciplinary team including researchers from NICTA, the University of Melbourne, and the Epworth and Royal Melbourne hospitals will look for a way to use genetic information to determine whether prostate cancer sufferers have the aggressive form of the disease.

A team of Melbourne-based researchers have been awarded a $670,000 NMHRC grant to develop techniques to analyse genetic information in order to identify lethal prostate cancers from less aggressive forms of the disease, potentially allowing more targeted treatments.

Eight patients have already donated to the project cancerous tissue from the prostate and bones at different stages of the disease.

Gene sequencing and other investigations generate terabytes of data for analysis, and researchers from NICTA's Victoria Research Laboratory are developing new algorithms and coordinating the processing.

"This project bridges computing and medicine and gives us the capacity to process the data into meaningful biology," said Associate Professor Christopher Hovens, director of scientific research at the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre.

Movember, the annual prostate cancer and male mental health awareness and fundraising event, is currently in full swing.

Cabrera, Blue Jays finalize $16 million deal

TORONTO (AP) ? New Blue Jays manager John Gibbons is happy to have Melky Cabrera after the All-Star game MVP finalized a $16 million, two-year contract with Toronto.

Cabrera, who completed a 50-game suspension for a positive test for testosterone, was not wanted back by the World Series champion San Francisco Giants.

He's still a good hitter, on the stuff or not," Gibbons said.

Cabrera gets $8 million in each of the next two seasons, up from a $6 million base salary this year.

The 28-year-old was leading the National League in hitting at .346 when he was suspended Aug. 15. He asked for a rules change that disqualified him from the batting title, feeling it would be a tainted crown. Cabrera had 11 homers, 25 doubles and 60 RBIs in 113 games.

Gibbons, announced as Toronto's new manager on Tuesday, was bench coach in Kansas City when Cabrera played for the Royals in 2011. He remembers Cabrera when he played for the New York Yankees and Gibbons managed Toronto in his previous stint.

"He was a very tough out back then. He had a knack for the big hit," Gibbons said.

Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos said a lot of players have received second chances in baseball. He said there won't be a third or fourth.

"Obviously, he made a terrible mistake," Anthopoulos said. "We heard he's a great teammate."

Gibbons envisions Cabrera batting second in his lineup.

"Alex paid a lot of money for him to come over and hit so he'll get as many at-bats as he can," Gibbons said.

Cabrera made his major league debut in 2005 with the New York Yankees and stayed with them until being traded to Atlanta after the 2009 season.

The Blue Jays had their share of sluggers ? Edwin Encarnacion hit 42 homers and two-time home run champ Jose Bautista hit 27 ? but didn't score at an exceptional rate.

Toronto scored 716 runs last season, seventh among the 14 American League teams.

Clinton?s high-profile swan song

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at a meeting with President Barack Obama, second from left, and Japan's??Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was supposed to be heading for the exit, even as the fight over who should succeed her escalated. Instead, America's top diplomat sped Tuesday to the Middle East on an urgent mission to douse flaring violence between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist Palestinian group that controls Gaza.

Amid early, disputed reports of a possible truce, Clinton had several major goals: Ease the violence, bolster Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, and avoid an appearance of giving Hamas any sort of legitimacy on the world stage. The U.S. regards Hamas as a terrorist group and deals only with the Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas, which controls the West Bank but has been relegated to the sidelines of the latest deadly clashes.

As Clinton winged her way to the troubled region, President Barack Obama?en route to Washington from a trip to Asia?spoke by telephone to Morsi from Air Force One, their third such conversation in 24 hours.

Obama "commended President Morsi's efforts to pursue a de-escalation," Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters aboard the presidential plane. "And he also underscored that President Morsi's efforts reinforce the important role that President Morsi and Egypt play on behalf of regional security and the pursuit of broader peace between the Palestinians and Israelis."

Morsi, whose country shares a peace accord with Israel and a border with Gaza, is thought to have sway with Hamas.

Clinton was to stop in Jerusalem for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in Ramallah to meet with Abbas and in Cairo for discussions with Morsi. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Clinton aimed for a "de-escalation of violence and a durable outcome that ends the rocket attacks on Israeli cities and towns and restores a broader calm."

American officials have been leery of using the term "cease-fire," preferring variations on "de-escalation" of the conflict.

Clinton's visit came as the political battle over the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the American compound in Benghazi, Libya, clouded the debate over who will succeed her.

Republicans have accused the Obama administration of covering up the role of suspected extremists in the assault, and questioned whether Clinton's State Department correctly handled requests for more security at the site. The president's foes have targeted Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, who at the request of the White House in several television interviews incorrectly tied the attack to protests sparked by an Internet video that ridiculed Islam.

The Benghazi strike claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. It has also highlighted the uncertain fate of so-called Arab spring countries?like Egypt?where popular movements swept aside decades-old authoritarian regimes.

Ahead of Clinton's visit, the White House renewed its support for Israel's military operations but hinted at disapproval of a possible ground offensive. Netanyahu's government has called up thousands of troops in what could be preparations for such an onslaught.

Rhodes told reporters the U.S. would prefer to see the Israelis work "diplomatically and peacefully" to resolve the crisis, noting both Palestinian and Israeli civilians would be at risk in the event of a ground assault.

Clinton's stop in Ramallah underscored a diplomatic peculiarity of her trip:?Top U.S. officials regard the Palestinian Authority as such minor players in the current crisis, neither Obama nor Clinton have spoken to Abbas since the violence escalated nearly a week ago.

While Clinton by Monday had reached out to leaders?including Jordan's King Abdullah; the foreign ministers of Israel, Egypt, France and Turkey; Egypt's prime minister; and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon?she had not spoken to Abbas.

By refusing to deal directly with Hamas and reaching out to the Palestinian Authority instead, Clinton appeared to be trying to resolve the conflict without involving one of the key participants.

Rhodes on Tuesday reiterated U.S. conditions for dealing directly with Hamas: The group must renounce terrorism and recognize Israel's right to exist.

He also defended Clinton's trip to Ramallah, calling it a worthwhile investment "both as it relates to what's happening in Gaza and our efforts going forward to improve the situation in Gaza, but also in terms of our broader efforts to pursue peace between the Israelis and Palestinians."

Rhodes's message was implicit but unmistakable: ?If the Palestinians want a lasting peace deal, they should align with the Palestinian Authority and not with Hamas or other extremist groups.

The U.S. has for years been steadfast in its posture toward Hamas. Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, a top contender for Clinton's job,?did not talk to Hamas when he made a surprise visit to Gaza in January 2009.

Clinton headed to the Middle East after traveling to Asia with Obama on what aides to both expected would be their final joint trip overseas, including a history-making stop in Myanmar.

Aboard Air Force One on a flight between Rangoon and Cambodia, the one-time political rivals sat in Obama's private office sharing memories of their work together.

"As the president said, it wasn't just the last four years; they have been through a lot together over the last five or six years," Rhodes said. "But right now there is urgent business to be done."

Nintendo Wii U review

Nintendo Wii U review

Nintendo's new console is an anomaly in the game console ecosystem, but not for Nintendo. The company that -- in just the last decade -- popularized stylus-powered gaming, microphone-powered gaming and motion-based gaming, is once again pushing game control inputs forward. And just like its previous consoles, lessons learned from past hardware build the foundation of its latest effort: the Wii U and its bizarre-looking, but conventionally named, "GamePad."

The Wii U console itself, for instance, looks almost exactly like the original Wii. It's longer (10.6 inches vs. 8.5 inches for the Wii), a bit rounder on the edges, and there's an HDMI port out back, but overall it's quite similar to its squatter predecessor. It's enough that you'd get the two confused if they were sitting in the same entertainment center. Naturally, the beefed-up internals and Wii backwards compatibility mean you'll likely be replacing the ol' virtual tennis machine should you choose to pick one up.

Of course, the GamePad is the real star of the show here, bolstered by Nintendo's ambitious "TVii" experiment. Everyone's favorite Italian plumber looks super in HD, no doubt, but how software employs the multifaceted touchscreen tablet / traditional game controller hybrid is what really matters. So, how does the Wii U fare? Find out below.

Hubble traps galactic fireflies

ScienceDaily (Nov. 19, 2012) ? Luminous galaxies glow like fireflies on a dark night in this image snapped by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The upper central galaxy in this image is a gigantic elliptical galaxy designated 4C 73.08. A prominent spiral galaxy seen from "above" shines in the lower part of the image, while examples of galaxies viewed edge-on also populate the cosmic landscape.

In the optical and near-infrared light captured to make this image, 4C 73.08 does not appear all that beastly. But when viewed in longer wavelengths the galaxy takes on a very different appearance. Dust-piercing radio waves reveal plumes emanating from the core, where a supermassive black hole spews out twin jets of material. 4C 73.08 is classified as a radio galaxy as a result of this characteristic activity in the radio part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Astronomers must study objects such as 4C 73.08 in multiple wavelengths in order to learn their true natures, just as seeing a firefly's glow would tell a scientist only so much about the insect. Observing 4C 73.08 in visible light with Hubble illuminates galactic structure as well as the ages of constituent stars, and therefore the age of the galaxy itself. 4C 73.08 is decidedly redder than the prominent, bluer spiral galaxy in this image. The elliptical galaxy's redness comes from the presence of many older, crimson stars, which shows that 4C 73.08 is older than its spiral neighbor.

The image was taken using Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 through two filters: one which captures green light, and one which captures red and near-infrared light.

PST: Austin Berry is MLS's top rookie

Looks like D.C. United young starlet Nick DeLeon waited a little too long to close the gap.

Major League Soccer?s Rookie of the Year race looked like no contest with a few weeks remaining; Chicago center back Austin Berry appeared to be the clear choice.

DeLeon did a little gap-closing toward the end. He had started with such a dynamic flourish, but the middle months had gotten a little soft.

Still, that closing sprint nearly made things interesting. And that last dash looked even better when held up alongside a fantastic post-season performance, including perhaps the proud organization?s most important goals in five seasons. DeLeon?s late finish in the conference semifinal round took down the league?s most visible franchise, the pricy assembly roster around Red Bull Arena.

But voting was done before the playoffs, so it came as no shock this morning when Berry was announced as 2012?s Rookie of the Year.

DeLeon was second in balloting, followed by Vancouver?s Darren Mattocks, Toronto?s Luis Silva and New York?s Connor Lade.
