Google patent app details myFaveslike carrier contacts integration with social network circles

With more carriers pushing unlimited calling plans, we can't say there's necessarily a need for the friends and family features of yesteryear on this side of the Atlantic, but plenty of networks beyond the good ole US of A are a bit more stingy when it comes to tallying talk time. The latest Google patent application to be published was filed last December and covers exactly this type of scenario, suggesting that the Google+ profile of the future could include an option to create a "Telco Co. Preferred Calling" circle, which would theoretically enable free calling between yourself and a small group of friends.

According to the application, semi-public information, such as a telephone number, would be shared between Google and a registered service provider, and you would maintain discount calling relationships from within Google+, adding and dropping callers to and from your online contacts list. You could also dictate custom rules, such as ringtones for contacts in specific groups, or create carrier-branded circles that are populated with your friends on the same network, making it easier to determine whether or not you'll be billed for calls to a particular user. Like all patent applications, there's no guarantee that Google's submission with come to fruition, but if you're feeling optimistic, you can hit up the source link below for all the legalese.

California State Athletic Commission facing major financial difficulties

Things are not going well for the California State Athletic Commission. It is having severe financial troubles, and recently censured George Dodd, its executive director, for not telling the board just how bad the money situation is.

MMA Fighting is reporting the group that oversees MMA events is already under water, and could run a deficit of $700,000 by the time the year is over.

"Without the ability to pay for even basic services, the Commission will have no choice but to cease operation immediately and cancel or postpone indefinitely all Commission regulated events," Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) director Denise Brown wrote in a recent letter to CSAC's executive director George Dodd.

Zuffa has three events scheduled for California in the next two months. UFC on Fuel 4 will be in San Jose, UFC on Fox 4 will take place in Los Angeles, and Strikeforce's championship bout between Ronda Rousey and Sarah Kaufman is set for San Diego. None of these events are expected to be affected, but California is a go-to state for Zuffa. California hosted four UFC and Strikeforce events in 2011.

Considering the state's financial problems, it's not a surprise to see the CSAC stumble. California is projecting a deficit of $4 billion and has been running in the red for four years. Its financial problems are so well-known there is a Wikipedia entry devoted to California's budget crisis.

But where the true problem lies for the CSAC is how to dig out of its hole. Without money, it can't run high-grossing events, but without high-grossing events, it can't earn money.

World's oldest known pottery discovered in China

A team of Chinese and American experts have determined that pottery found in a Chinese cave is some 20,000 years old.

The findings, which will appear in the journal Science on Friday, add to recent efforts that have dated pottery piles in east Asia to more than 15,000 years ago, refuting conventional theories that the invention of pottery correlates to the period about 10,000 years ago when humans moved from being hunter-gathers to farmers.

The research by a team of Chinese and American scientists also pushes the emergence of pottery back to the last ice age, which might provide new explanations for the creation of pottery, said Gideon Shelach, chair of the Louis Frieberg Center for East Asian Studies at The Hebrew University in Israel.

"The focus of research has to change," Shelach, who is not involved in the research project in China, said by telephone.

In an accompanying Science article, Shelach wrote that such research efforts "are fundamental for a better understanding of socio-economic change (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) and the development that led to the emergency of sedentary agricultural societies."

He said the disconnection between pottery and agriculture as shown in east Asia might shed light on specifics of human development in the region.

Wu Xiaohong, professor of archaeology and museology at Peking University and the lead author of the Science article that details the radiocarbon dating efforts, told The Associated Press that her team was eager to build on the research.

"We are very excited about the findings. The paper is the result of efforts done by generations of scholars," Wu said. "Now we can explore why there was pottery in that particular time, what were the uses of the vessels, and what role they played in the survival of human beings."

The ancient fragments were discovered in the Xianrendong cave in south China's Jiangxi province, which was excavated in the 1960s and again in the 1990s, according to the journal article.

Wu, a chemist by training, said some researchers had estimated that the pieces could be 20,000 years old, but that there were doubts.

"We thought it would be impossible because the conventional theory was that pottery was invented after the transition to agriculture that allowed for human settlement."

But by 2009, the team ? which includes experts from Harvard and Boston universities ? was able to calculate the age of the pottery fragments with such precision that the scientists were comfortable with their findings, Wu said.

"The key was to ensure the samples we used to date were indeed from the same period of the pottery fragments," she said.

That became possible when the team was able to determine the sediments in the cave were accumulated gradually without disruption that might have altered the time sequence, she said.

Scientists took samples, such as bones and charcoal, from above and below the ancient fragments in the dating process, Wu said.

"This way, we can determine with precision the age of the fragments, and our results can be recognized by peers," Wu said.

Shelach said he found the process done by Wu's team to be meticulous and that the cave had been well protected throughout the research.

The same team in 2009 published an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, in which they determined the pottery fragments found in south China's Hunan province to be 18,000 years old, Wu said.

"The difference of 2,000 years might not be significant in itself, but we always like to trace everything to its earliest possible time," Wu said. "The age and location of pottery fragments help us set up a framework to understand the dissemination of the artifacts and the development of human civilization."

Spice Girls 'Viva Forever!' Musical: Five Must-Hear Tracks

MTV News picks the pop ballads we most want to hear when the Spice Girls musical hits the stage.
By Jocelyn Vena

Spice Girls

The Spice Girls — all five of them — appeared in London on Tuesday to announce "Viva Forever!," a musical based on their career and music, named after their 1997 single.

The girls gathered on the stairs of the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, 16 years after they shot their star-making "Wannabe" video there. With "Mamma Mia!" producer Judy Craymer and "Absolutely Fabulous" star Jennifer Saunders collaborating on the project, this jukebox musical, according to the ladies, will "embrace all generations."

This is hardly the first time that the ladies have used their rise to fame as the basis for a piece of semi-fiction. They spoofed their pop superstardom in the 1997 comedy "Spice World." And, while it was a landmark event to see all five of the Spice Girls in one place on Tuesday, they also reunited for a massive world tour in 2007.

In an interview with the BBC at the event, the Spice Girls themselves seemed excited to have their music, which focused quite frequently on themes of female empowerment, hitting the stage for a new crop of young people to hear. Posh Spice herself, Victoria Beckham, added, "We're going to be introducing a whole new generation to Girl Power."

So, when it comes to a musical based on the music of the peace sign-making, platform shoe-wearing, brassy fivesome, there's an endless number of tracks that can be plucked from their catalog to include in the show. So, MTV News is pitching our five favorite (and in our opinion definitive) tracks that we hope make the final cut of the show.

"Wannabe"
This is the track that introduced the world to the Spice Girls. Off their 1996 debut, Spice, the cheeky song reminded any potential love interests that "If you wannabe my lover, you got to get with my friends." Not only did it launch the ladies to pop fame, it also made the term "zigazig-ha" a perplexing, must sing-along-to lyric.

"Say You'll Be There"
Also off Spice, this track, which spawned our favorite SG video of all time thanks to its overt references to "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!," picked up where "Wannabe" left off, reminding girls everywhere that just because a guy really likes you doesn't mean you have to commit to him. Girl power, indeed.

"Spice Up Your Life"
One year after dropping their debut, the ladies were still riding high off instant mega-fame and released 1997's Spice World. "Spice Up Your Life" was all about throwing caution to the wind no matter your race or gender, with the ladies proudly proclaiming, "Colors of the world/ Spice up your life/ Every boy and every girl/ Spice up your life." With congos and Latin music influencing the sound of the track (and everything that year), "Spice" was an anthem that proved their music can just make you dance, or merengue.

"Stop"
"Stop right now/Thank you very much/I need somebody with a human touch." While we're still not exactly sure what that means — unless, of course the ladies had been romanced by robots 8212; we get where the girls are coming from on this 1998 single about guys who just can't quit playing games with their hearts.

"Too Much"
The girl group slowed it down in '98 for this awesome ballad where the five ladies have some choice words for any guy who thinks it's going to be easy to woo the Spice Girls. Reminder, they want a man, not a boy who thinks he can. Um, tell us about it, girls. Which is your favorite Spice Girls song? Tell us in the comments below!

Exxon's CEO: Climate, energy fears overblown

NEW YORK (AP) ? ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson says fears about climate change, drilling, and energy dependence are overblown.

In a speech Wednesday, Tillerson acknowledged that burning of fossil fuels is warming the planet, but said society will be able to adapt. The risks of oil and gas drilling are well understood and can be mitigated, he said. And dependence on other nations for oil is not a concern as long as access to supply is certain, he said.

Tillerson blamed a public that is "illiterate" in science and math, a "lazy" press, and advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" for energy misconceptions in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations.

He highlighted that huge discoveries of oil and gas in North America have reversed a 20-year decline in U.S. oil production in recent years. He also trumpeted the global oil industry's ability to deliver fuels during a two-year period of dramatic uncertainty in the Middle East, the world's most important oil and gas-producing region.

"No one, anywhere, any place in the world has not been able to get crude oil to fuel their economies," he said.

In his speech and during a question-and-answer session after, he addressed three major energy issues: Climate change, oil and gas drilling pollution, and energy dependence.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Tillerson, in a break with predecessor Lee Raymond, has acknowledged that global temperatures are rising. "Clearly there is going to be an impact," he said Wednesday.

But he questioned the ability of climate models to predict the magnitude of the impact. He said that people would be able to adapt to rising sea levels and changing climates that may force agricultural production to shift.

"We have spent our entire existence adapting. We'll adapt," he said. "It's an engineering problem and there will be an engineering solution."

Andrew Weaver, chairman of climate modeling and analysis at the University of Victoria in Canada, disagreed with Tillerson's characterization of climate modeling. He said modeling can give a very good sense of the type of climate changes that are likely. And he said adapting to those changes will be much more difficult and disruptive than Tillerson seems to be acknowledging.

Steve Coll, author of the recent book "Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power," said he was surprised Exxon would already be talking about ways society could adapt to climate change when there is still time to try to avoid its worst effects. Also, he said, research suggests that adapting to climate change could be far more expensive than reducing emissions now. "Moving entire cities would be very expensive," he said.

Legislation or regulation that would help slow the emissions of global warming gases would likely lead to lower demand for oil and gasoline, and could reduce Exxon's profit.

DRILLING

Tillerson expressed frustration at the level of public concern over new drilling techniques that tap natural gas and oil in shale formations under several states. He said environmental advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" have alarmed a public that doesn't understand drilling practices ? or math, science or engineering in general. He blamed "lazy" journalists for producing stories that scare the public but don't investigate the claims of advocacy groups.

Drilling for oil and gas will always involve risks of spills and accidents, he said. But those risks are manageable and worth taking because they are small given the amount of energy they produce.

Drilling in shale formations, he said, only poses a small risk to those living nearby. It is neither life threatening nor long lasting and can be controlled in the event of an accident.

Drillers force millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and some hazardous chemicals into shale formations. The technique breaks up rock and creates escape routes for oil and gas. If the drilling wastewater is not treated properly or if it seeps through cracked drilling pipes, it could contaminate drinking water.

The industry's biggest challenge, he said, is "taking an illiterate public and try to help them understand why we can manage these risks."

ENERGY SECURITY

Tillerson made a distinction between energy security and energy dependence. He said that energy security ? making sure that the economy has access to energy ? is crucial.

But he said access to energy is not in peril. "Some of the fears around energy security are not well founded," he said.

The quest for energy independence, though, is misguided, he said. It doesn't matter where the U.S. gets oil because crude is priced globally. Even if the U.S. used only oil from North America, a disruption in the Middle East would increase global prices, hurt the U.S. and global economies, and force Americans to pay more at the pump.

Even if the U.S. no longer needed Middle Eastern oil, it would likely want to play a major role in helping maintain the region's security, Tillerson said.

'My Three Sons' big brother Don Grady dies at 68

(AP) ? Don Grady, who was one of television's most beloved big brothers as Robbie Douglas on the long-running 1960s hit "My Three Sons," died Wednesday. He was 68.

His "My Three Sons" co-star Barry Livingston, who played youngest brother Ernie, confirmed Grady's death to The Associated Press. Livingston said Grady had been suffering from cancer and receiving hospice care at his home in Thousand Oaks, Calif. But the exact cause and place of death were not immediately clear.

"It's the oldest cliche in the world when TV brothers start referring to each other like biological brothers, but he was the oldest, and somebody I looked up to and learned from a great deal about life," Livingston said.

Born in San Diego as Don Louis Agrati, Grady had a brief stint singing and dancing on "The Mickey Mouse Club" starting at age 13.

But he was best known by far as one of Fred MacMurray's "My Three Sons" on the series that ran on ABC and later CBS from 1960 to 1972.

The popular show, which featured MacMurray as a widowed aeronautical engineer struggling to raise three older boys, was among the longest running family sitcoms of all time with 380 episodes.

In the show's earlier years Douglas was actually the middle brother, with Tim Considine playing the oldest, Mike, and Stanley Livingston playing the youngest, Chip. When Considine departed, Barry Livingston became the adopted "third" son, and Grady became the cool, handsome and assured eldest brother that much of America adored.

A musical prodigy from a young age, Grady appeared with a band, the Greefs, in the series, and in real life played drums for The Yellow Balloon, who had a minor hit with a self-titled song in 1967.

He made a handful of guest appearances on TV series in the 1970s and 1980s, but worked primarily as a musician and composer, writing the theme for "The Phil Donahue Show" and music for the Blake Edwards film "Switch" and the popular Las Vegas show "EFX," a showcase for "Phantom of the Opera" star Michael Crawford.

"The one real through-line in his life was music," Livingston said. "I would think Don would love to be remembered for his great music as much as a teen idol and television icon."

Jamal Lewis the Latest Pro Athlete to File for Bankruptcy | Lawyers ...

Jamal Lewis

Former Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis filed for bankruptcy protection in April but failed to provide required financial documents or appear for a mandatory interview with court officials. (AP Photo/John Amis, File)

Former National Football League star running back Jamal Lewis, 32, has filed for bankruptcy protection in Georgia, saying that he can?t pay $10.6 million in debts.

Lewis broke into the league with a splash in 2003, running for 295 yards in the Baltimore Ravens? home opener in the stadium that had just been rechristened M&T Bank Stadium for the company that had bought the naming rights. Today, though, M&T Bank is one of the creditors listed in Lewis? court documents for a $350,000 judgment on a defaulted loan.

M&T Bank is among the companies saying that Lewis didn?t repay loans that he took out to finance several real estate ventures and a trucking company, as well as for houses and cars.

After filing for bankruptcy, however, Lewis failed to submit required financial records to the federal bankruptcy court in Atlanta and also didn?t appear for a scheduled interview with court officials. The bankruptcy trustee then asked the court to either dismiss Lewis? case or convert it from Chapter 11, which allows the creation of a repayment plan, to Chapter 7, which would allow the sale of his $14.4 million in assets to pay off the creditors.

A hearing has been scheduled for July 10.

?

Financial Woes All Too Common for Pro Athletes

If Lewis? financial woes have a familiar ring, it?s because stories of millionaire athletes having difficulty handling their money have become commonplace. In 2009, Sports Illustrated reported that nearly 80 percent of NFL players are in financial trouble within two years after retirement.

Attorney Timothy Liam Epstein, who chairs the Sports Law Practice Group at SmithAmundsen in Chicago, considers the Sports Illustrated finding ?not at all surprising.?

Timothy Liam Epstein

Epstein says there are a variety of reasons why so many professional athletes encounter financial problems.

First, he says, while their annual salaries are huge, their careers typically last only a few years and they often haven?t learned how to budget their money for their post-career lives.

?Exacerbating the problem, athletes often hire family or friends to manage their money and put too much trust in them,? Epstein says. ?This often leads to disastrous consequences, and the story is all too common. The person entrusted with managing the athlete?s finances is either not looking out for the athlete?s best interest or [is] equally na?ve when it comes to management of a professional athlete?s lifestyle.?

?Another reason, he says, is that young athletes are too often easy prey for companies that are seeking financial backing because they are ?rich, young, and often less educated.?

In addition, Epstein points out, young professional athletes face peer pressure to adopt a free-spending lifestyle that?s seen as emblematic of being a successful player.

?The trouble is that they are living this lifestyle without much knowledge or regard for the long-term financial consequences and often with no financial planning whatsoever. With proper financial counsel, athletes should have a general idea of what they are worth and how much they are spending, but the reality is that many are unadvised or misadvised, which is often worse.?

?

Epstein: NCAA should do more

?Which raises the question: Should agents, leagues, teams, or the NCAA take greater responsibility in providing some degree of financial guidance to pro or pro-bound athletes?

According to Epstein, in recent years the NFL and NCAA have recognized the problem?at least to a certain extent?by partnering to host a ?Life Skills Education and Professional Development Summit? for the purpose of assisting student athletes? off-field personal and professional development. And he said this year?s summit produced a plan to develop a program called ?Banking on a Bright Future,? which would focus on financial literacy topics, ranging from budgeting to investment to retirement planning.

But he believes the NCAA and member schools could do more.

?There is no reason why the NCAA could not mandate financial courses similar to the program proposed at the NFL-NCAA summit,? he says. ?Educating future professional athletes at a younger age will instill a sense of responsibility and impute greater knowledge of financial prudence that will provide a much stronger foundation for future financial stability.?

The reality, Epstein says, is that once athletes have signed a contract and the big money is rolling in, it?s frequently too late.

?The fact is, once athletes start receiving big checks, it is all too easy for them to tune out their teams or agents,? he says. ?Educational programs and courses should be offered at the college level to properly prepare student athletes for their future.?

Kan. man faces sentencing for teen's murder

(AP) ? The mother and sister of a 14-year-old cheerleader whose burned body was found at the Great Bend asphalt plant are expected to make victim impact statements Tuesday at the sentencing for the man convicted of killing her, prosecutors said.

The state did not seek the death penalty against 38-year-old Adam Longoria, but Barton County District Judge Hannelore Kitts has little leeway in deciding his punishment because jurors convicted him of capital murder for the August 2010 death of Alicia DeBolt. In Kansas, a capital murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of at least life without parole ? even when the death penalty is already off the table.

It is not known whether Longoria, who did not take the stand at his trial, will make a courtroom statement.

To find Longoria guilty of capital murder, jurors had to determine he committed criminal sodomy, aggravated criminal sodomy or attempted rape during the killing. Jurors decided he committed all three, and also found him guilty of vehicle burglary and theft.

Alicia was last seen alive leaving her home for a party just before midnight on Aug. 21, 2010. Her family reported her missing the next day, setting off a search that ended three days later when her remains, with traces of duct tape on her ankles and face, were found at the Venture Corp. plant outside Great Bend where Longoria worked.

Prosecutors showed jurors hundreds of text messages between Alicia and the then-36-year-old Longoria, who began pursuing the girl after meeting her at a party in July 2010. Those messages ? including some showing he picked up the girl the night she disappeared ? were featured prominently in the state's case.

Other evidence included gasoline on his gym shoes and video surveillance showing him buying $1.32 of gas on the night she disappeared. Longoria's now ex-girlfriend testified that he smelled of gasoline when he came home and that her car ? which he had borrowed that night ? reeked of it. Several witnesses testified that Longoria asked them to lie about his whereabouts that night. Longoria's semen was also found mixed with Alicia's DNA in the vehicle.

Longoria was arrested after fled Great Bend ? driving an SUV stolen from the asphalt company ? within hours after investigators searched his house.

The defense attorneys tried to cast doubt on the state's evidence, suggesting a tiny amount of DNA from an unknown male that was found in the girl's mouth indicated someone else may have killed her. They also told jurors that since Longoria had previously bragged about having sex with the girl, her DNA could have ended up in his car on another occasion.

Denver officer shot, killed near park concert

(AP) ? A Denver police officer trying to break up a confrontation was shot and killed at a city park where families had gathered for a free weekly jazz concert before gunfire erupted and sent hundreds running.

The officer, who was shot in the head Sunday, was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. Police were searching for a suspect in what Jackson described as an isolated incident.

At least three shots were fired shortly after the jazz band playing on a lake-side pavilion stage finished, sending waves of people running through park grounds where some concert goers who were initially unaware of the shooting remained seated on picnic blankets and lawn chairs.

More than 1,000 people were at the City Park Jazz concert, the fourth of 10 shows scheduled for this summer in the annual series that draws families and people of all backgrounds to one of the city's more popular summer events. The mayor said late Sunday that the concerts should continue.

"We will not surrender what we consider special in this city to anyone," Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said.

Nakira Doss, a jazz singer herself, said she hopes the series continues. The 28-year-old mother was at the show Sunday and sitting near the stage with her children, ages 4, 5 and 7, when she heard at least two shots. As people ran past, she said told her children to "get on the ground" and then she laid herself over them.

"I'm trying to show them music, but at what cost," she said, nodding toward her own children.

City Park is one Denver's most famous and sprawls across several hundred acres east of downtown. It holds the Denver Zoo, Museum of Nature and Science, as well as ponds, trails and recreational fields.

After shots rang out, scores of people ran from the northwest side of the pond and stage area, confusing crowds on the south side of the pond who were still lingering over conversation and picnics in lawn chairs and blankets. Someone announced from a loudspeaker on stage that the park was closed and told park goers to leave from the south side.

Nakira Doss, 28, was sitting near the stage when she heard at least two shots. She said she covered her three children, ages 7, 5 and 4, as other concertgoers ran past.

Samuel Bell, 19, of Denver, said he was in the parking lot looking for a space for his scooter, which police later cordoned off with yellow tape. He said he heard several shots.

"We just arrived at the park. It was crowded, it was looking fun," Bell said. "And then 'pa- pa-pa-pa' outta nowhere.

"We just ducked," Bell said. "We pulled off in enough time to get away. It was crazy."

He said he saw police officers administering CPR. He estimated he was about 10 to 20 feet away from where the officer was shot.

Can you handle long distance love? - Saltwater GIRL

Sometimes it happens that you and your boy end up in different places ? literally ? because of your careers. But that doesn?t mean things have to end. Here?s how to tell if your love can last. Image Courtesy: Tammy Jackson @www.art.swg.co.za

1. When your boyfriend?s out with his mates, how often do you call to check in during the night?

a) A few times.

b) Once, just to see if you can hear any chick voices in the background?

c) You don?t. You trust him.

2. When your guy hasn?t heard from you all day, he:

a) Might text you if he?s not busy.

b) Calls you up to say hi.

c) Usually waits another day or so before making contact.

?

3. When chatting about your day, your boyfriend usually:

a) Is very interested in what happened in your world.

b) Enjoys chatting about what happened at work.

c) Doesn?t say much.

?

4. What do you think of long distance relationships?

a) They can work if you and your guy are committed to the relationship.

b) They?re difficult.

c) They usually crash and burn.

?

5. When you don?t see your boyfriend for the entire weekend, you:

a) You feel resentful that he isn?t with you.

b) Try to focus on other activities, like seeing friends or doing fun hobbies.

c) Miss him like crazy!

?

Your score:

1. a3 b2 c1

2. a2 b1 c3

3. a1 b2 c3

4. a1 b2 c3

5. a2 b1 c3

Results:
5-7
Going the distance

You might fear the prospect of a LDR, but it seems you and your guy have some good foundations in place for making such a relationship work. You trust him, you both make the effort to keep in contact and you make time to chat/have quality time. These are important because when you?re in a long distance setup you?re going to have to rely on communication to bridge the gap. It?s also good that you have a full life outside of your relationship so that you won?t be left wondering what to do with your life when he?s gone. Remember that your relationship should never become your entire world!

8-11
Distance dilemma
Although you might have some good stuff going in your relationship, your relationship needs a bit of work if you?re going to survive a long distance setup. Sometimes you can?t help but feel that your trust issues could do with some work and you feel resentful when your partner can?t be with you. You want the relationship to be a priority but you?ve got to make sure that it is right up there on your boyfriend?s list of what he values most in his life. Get on the same page before you get on different continents.

12-15

Long distance lagger?
Your relationship needs help before you can try to make it work across continents or cities. Some things you need to have down if you want your relationship to work include solid trust, good communication and the desire to be committed to each other. Bear in mind that when you?re in different places, you?re going to have to rely on things such as technology (think Skype and social networks) in order to feel that you?re bridging the physical landscape. Set some rules for how the relationship is going to work when you?re apart from each other so that you won?t feel insecure or that you?re slipping into splitsville. It can only work if you?re both committed to it.

Egypt's Islamist president begins building government

CAIRO (Reuters) - Mohamed Morsy of the Muslim Brotherhood sets about building a civilian administration for Egypt on Monday that can heal a divisive history of oppression and coax a mistrustful army into relaxing its grip on power.

Behind the scenes, talks were already under way between the Islamists and generals to resolve disputes that blew up this month over steps by the ruling military council to hem in the powers of the first freely elected president Egypt has known.

Cairo's Tahrir Square, theatre of the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak, exploded in joy - and relief - on Sunday as Morsy was declared the narrow but convincing winner of last weekend's presidential run-off against Ahmed Shafik, another scion of the military establishment which has ruled Egypt for 60 years.

The celebrations continued through an unforgettable night after Morsy won by 3.5 percentage points or some 880,000 votes.

Those in Egypt and beyond who feared a win for Shafik might have spelled the end of the Arab Spring acknowledged a triumph for the popular will, and for the army which accepted it. From Syria's opposition came word that Cairo was again a "source of hope" for a people "facing a repressive war of annihilation."

But beyond the vast throng who waved their flags and chanted praises to God for hours on end on Tahrir Square, millions of Egyptians, and the Western powers, looked on with unease at the prospect of the long-suppressed Brotherhood making good on its dream of an Islamic state for the Arab world's biggest nation.

Among the most anxious were the young, urban revolutionaries who launched last year's uprising but saw their representatives knocked out in last month's first round vote, as well as diehard supporters of the old regime who fear for their privileges. Some Shafik admirers wept in fury that the army had "betrayed" them.

CONCILIATORY TALK

Morsy, a 60-year-old engineer who studied in California and was jailed for his politics by Mubarak's secret police, took his first steps in public to quell some fears: "I am today a president for all Egyptians," he said in an address after what he called "this historic moment, this luminous moment."

He repeated his respect for international treaties - a gesture to Israel, which has fretted about its 1979 peace deal, and to Egypt's army, whose big U.S. subsidy depends on it.

Barack Obama called him. "The president underscored that the United States will continue to support Egypt's transition to democracy and stand by the Egyptian people as they fulfill the promise of their revolution," the White House said.

The bearded Morsy, smiling occasionally, echoed that in his televised speech, saying he would work with others to see the democratic revolution through: "There is no room now for the language of confrontation," he said.

Morsy, an obscure party official before being catapulted to prominence by the disqualification of the movement's preferred candidate, has little choice but to compromise, and sources in the Brotherhood said a package of agreements, already discussed with senior generals last week, could soon be announced.

At daggers drawn for most of Egypt's modern history, the Brotherhood, an international model for many Islamist parties, and the army were drawn into a wary symbiosis once the military council pushed out Mubarak to appease the protesters and found in its long-banned enemy the most organized political force.

The Brotherhood, conscious of playing a long game, was ready to play its part in a transition. But cooperation frayed when the Islamists made a push for more control. They secured the lion's share in a parliament elected in January and, with the influence that offered over drafting a constitution, plus the presidency, would have been very much in the driving seat.

That was clearly too much for Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and his Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. With the help of a Mubarak-era judiciary, SCAF dissolved parliament on the eve of the presidential election and then gave itself the legislative power, adding also a potential role in forming a panel to write the constitution. It also revived some powers for martial law.

Critics at home and in the West called it a "soft coup."

NEGOTIATIONS

Senior Brotherhood officials say they have been negotiating in the past week to change some of that. Though both sides deny that any deal was struck over the result of the presidential vote itself, Morsy's election now sets a key reference point around which a power-sharing compromise can be built while the process of constructing a constitutional democracy goes on.

"President Morsy and his team have been in talks with the military council to bring back the democratically elected parliament and other issues," Essam Haddad, a senior Brotherhood official, told Reuters on Monday.

Brotherhood sources told Reuters they hoped the army might allow a partial recall of parliament and other concessions in return for Morsy exercising his powers to name a government and presidential administration in ways the army approves of - notably by extending appointments across the political spectrum.

Military officials have confirmed discussions in the past few days but had no immediate comment on the latest talks.

The Brotherhood has, movement officials said, approached secular reformist politician Mohamed ElBaradei, a former U.N. diplomat and Nobel peace laureate, to take a senior post, possibly as prime minister. ElBaradei has not commented.

Brotherhood officials have said they will press on with street protests to pressure the army but this, along with a number of other contentious issues including to whom and where Morsy swears his oath of office, could be settled soon.

The army wants Morsy sworn in on June 30, meeting a deadline it set itself for handing over Egypt to "civilian rule."

"Nobody should doubt there is going to be deal-making," said analyst Shadi Hamid, director of the Brookings Doha Center. "The (SCAF) still has the tanks and guns and the Brotherhood still understands that. There has to be some temporary power-sharing agreement. There has to be give and take."

RELIGIOUS IDEALS

Morsy, who evaded questions during his campaign on such fraught issues as dress codes on Egypt's profitable tourist beaches, peppered his address with religious language as he spoke from a lectern blazoned with the presidential seal - a jarring mix of sights and sounds for the vast majority Egypt's 82 million people who can remember no president but Mubarak.

He has promised a moderate "Islamic renaissance" for an Egypt mired in economic crisis. Supporters cite the example of Turkey, where the party now led by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan slowly eroded the army's resistance to pious politicians and the Muslim country has emerged as a political and economic force.

But Morsy, and the party grandees behind him, are aware that without cooperation from both the army, and the wider "deep state" of business and institutional vested interests built up under military rule, the Brotherhood risks accepting a poisoned chalice, enjoying the outward trappings of power but taking all the blame when life does not improve as fast as people hope.

Describing the election as "a true example of democracy to the world" a military council source said the pressure was on Morsy: "The onus now is on the new president to unite the nation and create a true coalition of political and revolutionary forces to rebuild the country economically and politically.

"The world is now watching the new president."

WESTERN CONCERNS

Calling it a "milestone in their transition to democracy," the United States, the army's key sponsor and also long wary of the rise of political Islam, joined other Western powers in congratulating Morsy and calling on him to form a government of national unity that would respect all Egyptians' civil rights, notably those of women and the 10-percent Christian minority.

The White House said: "It is important for President-elect Morsy to take steps at this historic time to advance national unity by reaching out to all parties and constituencies in consultations about the formation of a new government."

The British and French governments echoed that sentiment.

Israel is at war with the Brotherhood's Palestinian offshoot Hamas, which celebrated Morsy's win in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he "respected" the result and expected to continue cooperation under the peace treaty.

Half of those who voted in last month's first round of the election backed neither Morsy nor Shafik and many who voted in the run-off voted negatively - either against Morsy's religious agenda or against Shafik as a symbol of military rule.

"We voted for Morsy reluctantly to prevent Shafik from getting in because if he were president, we would all be hanged," said Mohamed Abdel Latif, 28, a youth activist in the second city of Alexandria. "From today, we will oppose Morsy.

"The Brotherhood must remember that they won because of us and they shouldn't repeat the mistakes of the past."

Shafik, a former air force commander and Mubarak's last prime minister, offered his congratulations and said he was willing to serve in Morsy's administration if asked.

He had the support of many Christians, who reacted gloomily to his defeat. Ehab Aziz of the Coptic American Friendship League said they were worried they would face special taxes, as some interpretations of Islamic law suggest for non-believers.

Joe Fahim, 29, a Christian in Cairo, said he was personally uncertain but added: "For most Copts though, it's doomsday."

Cano, Yankees touch up Dickey in 6-5 win over Mets

NEW YORK (AP) ? Not even R.A. Dickey's darting knuckleball could prevent another power show by the New York Yankees.

Robinson Cano hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning, and the Yankees touched up Dickey for five runs in a 6-5 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday night.

Nick Swisher hit an early three-run shot against Dickey, who was coming off consecutive one-hitters ? making him the first major league pitcher in 24 years to accomplish that feat. But in a much-anticipated matchup at sold-out Citi Field, both he and Yankees ace CC Sabathia were missing their best stuff.

"We feel like we can beat everybody. We never go into a game saying, 'We'll probably lose this one because this guy's hot,'" Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira said. "When people say, 'You can't beat him,' we go, 'OK, we'll prove you wrong.' It's kind of fun."

Leading off the eighth, Cano drove a 2-0 delivery from Miguel Batista (1-2) over the home run apple in straightaway center for his 16th homer and fifth in seven games. Taking advantage of a shaky Mets bullpen again, the Yankees won the final two games of the weekend series by one run to finish 5-1 against their crosstown rivals this season.

"Not too bad for a bunch of chickens," said Swisher, eager to take a shot at Mets closer Frank Francisco.

Before the series, Francisco called the Yankees "chickens" and later explained what he meant was that they often complain about calls by the umpires ? especially balls and strikes.

Francisco saved the series opener Friday but was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with a strained muscle on his left side.

Including a sweep at home earlier this month, the Yankees have won five consecutive series against the Mets since May 2010.

The Bronx Bombers hit 15 home runs against the Mets this season ? seven at reconfigured Citi Field ? to account for 24 of their 32 runs. They lead the majors with 112 homers in 71 games, including 34 in the last 19 games.

"They hit balls out of the ballpark like there's nothing to it," said Mets manager Terry Collins, who acknowledged he should have brought in left-hander Tim Byrdak to face Cano.

The talk of the town lately, Dickey was riding an unprecedented roll of dominance that rivaled any in baseball history. But the knuckleballer had an uncharacteristic bout of wildness against the homer-happy Yankees and lasted only six innings. He walked three, hit a batter and threw his first wild pitch of the season.

"I didn't have a great knuckleball. It was just coming out wobbly a little bit. I kept searching for it," Dickey said.

Boone Logan (2-0) gave the Yankees another splendid performance out of the bullpen, and David Robertson retired Ruben Tejada with a runner on third to end the eighth. Rafael Soriano worked a scoreless ninth in the rain for his 15th save in 16 chances.

The Yankees have won 14 of their last 18 road games.

Sabathia, also coming off a complete game with double-digit strikeouts, gave up nine hits in 5 2-3 innings. He was betrayed by his defense while yielding five runs ? one earned.

"It's up to me to be able to pick these guys up," Sabathia said. "I didn't make good enough pitches with two strikes."

Dickey received a big ovation during pregame introductions and sent a smiling Alex Rodriguez sprawling to the dirt with a high-and-tight pitch in the first ? perhaps the first time he's been buzzed by a knuckleball.

Dickey used his bat and legs to help the scrappy Mets get started on their comeback from a four-run deficit. He singled off Sabathia in the fifth and hustled home from second on David Wright's two-out RBI single.

The 37-year-old pitcher slid into Chris Stewart at the plate, getting a face full of catcher's mitt as his helmet was knocked off and the ball squirted away.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, the Mets capitalized on Cano's error at second base to score three unearned runs with two outs. Vinny Rottino, pinch-hitting for Dickey, drew a four-pitch walk from Sabathia and screened Teixeira when Andres Torres grounded a two-run single just past the Gold Glove first baseman.

Tejada tied it with a single off Cory Wade, who struck out pinch-hitter Kirk Nieuwenhuis with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Dickey wriggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second but couldn't escape in the third. Two walks sandwiched around Rodriguez's dribbler for an infield single loaded the bases for Teixeira, the pitcher's old buddy from their early days in Texas.

Teixeira made solid contact on a sacrifice fly, ending Dickey's streak without allowing an earned run at 44 2-3 innings ? second-best in team history behind Dwight Gooden's stretch of 49 innings in 1985.

Swisher then sent a 2-1 knuckler well beyond the 390-foot sign in right-center for his 11th homer and a 4-0 cushion. He clapped his hands high as he rounded first base and wore a broad smile when he got back to the dugout.

"Lucky," Swisher said. "I've never hit a ball like that off a knuckleballer, I know that."

It was the first home run off Dickey since Cincinnati slugger Joey Votto connected on May 17. After a no-decision in that game, Dickey won his next six starts heading into Sunday night.

"It didn't quite live up to the billing," he said. "But golly, I'm so proud of our guys who scrapped and fought. We can build off that."

NOTES: Yankees C Russell Martin sat out after leaving Saturday's game in the ninth inning with a stiff lower back. Stewart usually catches Sabathia anyway, but manager Joe Girardi reiterated that he wants to get Sabathia and Martin working together again. ... Raul Ibanez had three hits for the Yankees. ... Mets 1B Ike Davis, scratched from the lineup Saturday and sent home because of food poisoning, flied out as a pinch-hitter to end it. ... The crowd of 42,364 was the largest in the 4-year history of Citi Field.
